Patti LuPone (LOVE her, btw) never performed Evita more than SIX TIMES A WEEK. Her understudies did the matinees. As for Bernadette here, there's a light shining through her. She just beams like a young girl in love. That was missing for me in Sarah Brightman's interpretation.
Bernadette was wonderful in this and absolutely deserved her Tony win. It's just unfortunate that they rewrote the show so much for its Broadway debut. They dumbed the character down a lot, sadly, but Bernadette made it work.
She is so fabulous. And it is amazing how she simply just DOES NOT AGE, AT ALL. She is in her sixties now and she still looks exactly the same as she did here in 1986. Maybe it's good genes, maybe it's good plastic surgery, or maybe it's just magic, but whatever it is, it is mind-boggling.
Man, I remember when I got the soundtrack for this version of the show I was so disappointed because it was recorded poorly and all the high or loud parts had clipping. I love Bernadette, but still wonder why they didn't go with an English actress since it would've worked so well in the context of the show.
Allow me to disagree. I have seen Miss Brightman's performance and I found it disappointing: naive, childish, prime and proper all the time. I have come that musicals have better scores and music coming from Britain but with American production and cast.
She never belted to a G, if you are talking about a G5. Her highest note was F#5, sung totally legit. It is possible to belt a G5, and much higher, if you know the correct technique.

Absolutely stunning! Bernadette was fabulous here and has improved with age. I am so in awe of her, she is my idol!

It is VERY possible to belt a G - Patti LuPone did it 8 times a week in "Evita".
