. Guy on a buffalo, or two guys on a buffalo... Stephen and I head to Catalina Island in Southern California for a day of flying, $100 hamburgers, beautiful sites, and just a really cool excuse to commit aviation.
Stephen is time building in his Cessna 150, preparing to be a commercial pilot. Right now he's just a private pilot without instrument, but he's really close to achieving both as he works on his aviation career.
We start in Camarillo, CA at the Waypoint Cafe. I was hanging out there when his instructor saw me on my Instagram story. Then one thing lead to another, and we ended up going flying together.
It's always great to meet a new flying friend and head up. We went south past Point Magu and saw some traffic really close. They didn't have ADS-B on ForeFlight, so they were hard to see. But, it all worked out just fine.
Then we made our water crossing which is always something you need to be careful to consider for aviation safety. Flying over water can be hazardous if the correct preparations aren't made. But we had life preservers and got a bit higher.
Stephen told me about a recent shark encounter that someone had, where the shark bit their kayak and embedded its teeth. Pretty crazy!
Then we landed the airplane at Catalina Island in the traffic pattern. I did sterile cockpit so Stephen could concentrate. Let's just say his landing was... successful. We made it down in one piece ;D
This airport is quite challenging, being on top of the mountain, and on a slope. It means you get a lot of wind moving around, making for a very dynamic and active landing sequence. In all fairness, I just wanted to point out that it is a challenging place to land an airplane.
Catalina Island is a conservatory and kept very wild. There are even wild buffalo on the island. And yes, we did have a buffalo burger. And it was amazing.
After seeing the sights on the island, we took off and flew around the rest of the island, taking in the sights. With an airplane we can circumnavigate pretty easy. The water is bright blue, with big crashing waves. It's a really impressive flight.
I bet Stephen $10 that he couldn't see buffalo before me... and lost. We saw buffalo from the airplane! Very cool.
Later I said my debt was null and void if I could land the airplane really smoothly. But, I didn't. Even this CFI couldn't do it... Oh well.
Had a blast, and I hope you enjoyed it as well!

What makes your videos really appealing, and a real pleasure to watch, is that they don't profess to "know it all" but rather share truthfully and practically the joys and challenges of flying with an unscripted narration which is genuine and sincere. Thank you for your efforts and great videos. My adage is everyone can fly but everyone shouldn't fly. In your case you were born to fly.
Thank you. There are a lot of know-it-alls out there on UA-cam.
Bro I'm not ABOUT to judge a dude's landing on UA-cam!! Lots of pressure when you've got an extremely well known UA-camr (and CFI) in the right seat!!! 🤣
I stumbled on your channel today and watched a few videos. Then I learned about Guy on a Buffalo. My life is now complete, thanks to you. Guy on a buffallooooo!!
Yup. You’ve reached the pinnacle of enlightenment. Now what?!
Angle of Attack I dunno, learn to fly I guess?
Loved the CLEEAAARRR! 😂 im gonna try it with my instructor 🤯
Make sure it’s unsuspecting!
Cracks me up every time.
Also as a commercial pilot who goes there all the time i can attest to the various wind shear that can occur at Catalina and make the landing "interesting." It's definitely a place where you have to have good go around judgement.
I made that exact same trip only out of Van Nuys in 1975 and the same airplane I was the passenger and Mark the pilot was my next door neighbor we had the Buffalo burgers, wow does your video bring back memory's we flew over the pass right down the San Diego fwy and over the middle of LAX than out to Catalina thanks for the memory's
Glad it sparked some good memories for you.
Love the expression of the pilot as he discovers “noice-cancelling” option for his headset….😎
You've got to put that "CLEEAAARRR" on some sorta gizmo and sell it on Sporty's!
You mean like a shirt? www.angleofattack.com/product/clear-tee/
@@angleofattack Nice! ok, gotta pick 1 up now
@@angleofattack the aviation public still wants your actual voice on a mini recorder type thingamajig, just like an airhorn for vehicles
Not sure what happened but couldn't go thru PayPal.
That song will be stuck in my head for the rest of the day
Long time no see! I think Flowers did one out there with with a young lady? All they talked about was hiking trails and scenery. Not the important stuff like huge 'buffalo burgers'! Got to see that some day! Thanks for the proper tour! 8) --gary
Been doing regular VLOGs each week! Glad you enjoyed my take on it.
I can't judge him for flying with you that's a lot of pressure itself. I love your information, I learn a lot from you! Thank you, Chris, for these videos, you just make me enjoy the journey!
Fun stuff. Catalina's airstripe is fast becoming a favorite of mine via UA-cam of course.
Great video! Been there once. Loved those buffalo burgers 🍔. A must flight if you are in so cal. Can’t wait to go back and tru the new runway. Also FYI was an OS is the navy and all navy vessels should be monitoring guard 121.5 so if you do have engine troubles in the channel and you see a navy ship (which you probably will because I feel like we were always cruising in there) I would head for them. You should be able to communicate with them on your way down. They are also required to have a rescue swimmer on board which would be nice if you go down in the water.
That’s actually really awesome info! Thanks! Still wouldn’t want to test that out.
His reaction to the shark, thought you were going to turn around. That was awesome.
You are my hero. I thought only I shared Guy on a Buffalo with people to see their reaction.
Any Good landing is one you walk away from, But a great landing is one where the equipment is still usable. Catalina is the equivalent to Friday Harbor (FHR) in the Puget Sound. Definitely (AVX) is on my list of places to fly too.
Been to both! Both are great.
Gorgeous location, on the bucket list. And buffalo is delicious!
Same over here in Michigan. Crossing the Great Lakes in a single engine plane makes auto roughness a real thing lol
Great trip with cool views, thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching.
Another nice vid!! Highlights: the finger action at 4:57😆, the thought of you and I in a 150(me-6’4”-270#), and the look on your face when Steven told you the shark story😬...made me wonder if you would’ve gone if he told you before hand!!😆🤣Thanks for the effort!!👍👍👊
Hahaha. Makes one wonder.
I started aviation last year at 30, nice landings 🤙🏽
Awesome! How have you done so far?
Angle of Attack great so far, love it just waiting on a checkride
Awesome man!! Best of luck on the ride
Gold star perfect landing both of you! I was cracking up the entire video watching it. Thanks Chris for sharing and of course CLEEAARRR!
Catalina def palace to visit. Josh's video covered it too, nice to see other pilots visit and film it. Gives different perspectives. Thanks guys!!!
Great time Chris. Strange to see buffalo on a secluded island. They don't swim well lol.
Sure don’t.
This is a bucket list item for me.
Lucky man. That has always been on my bucket list to fly out there. 😁
Just listened to your Pod Cast with Josh from Av101 this morning. Alot of similarities with water flight, gliding and unfamiliar situations. Great video Mr. Palmer
so many " but did a bear eat you" reply's to his shark comments
Nice trip to Catalina Island..greetings from Iceland
Another great video. Keep 'em coming.
Thanks, will do!
I flew to Catalina several times when I 1st got my ticket, (1979). Brought back some cool memories. But istead of yelling "clear prop", I was a smart ass and yelled "clear the whirling blade of death".Good times. But never in front of my CFI!
Hey I just flew out there last Sunday! It was awesome
Personally I always wore my life jacket when flying over water in a 150 due to the cramped cockpit.
I wouldn’t argue against that.
That looked like so much fun. I don’t fly but I would have loved to be there.
Hahahahahaha........loved it!! I have not heard Guy on a Buffalo in ages!! What a great trip out to Catalina. It's been on our short list of places to take our TR182 RG. If you find yourself gallivanting around San Antonio, TX look me up. For your host, way to stay with that landing on the island. Good stick man!! I enjoyed this one more than Flowers' vid...HA!
Glad you enjoyed it! May be visiting Sir Flowers in Texas soon.
@@angleofattack, then hop over to 5C1! I'll give you guys the scenic air tour of San Antonio and take you guys to Big Bibbs BBQ at Stinson Municipal's (KSSF) airport cafe'. That fly-in BBQ is not to be missed.
outside Alaska woow that was an Awesome video Thank You
I like the phone/camera hooked up to a power source, right next to the magnetic compass. Not the mark of a professional. People had died making a similar mistake.
Glad you guys became friends 👍🏻
I dunno man, I’m not sure if I’d feel comfy being 15-20 miles from land in that old 150 if I had a choice, that water’s cold. Why not fly over LAX airspace and then take the shorter crossing by Long Beach? And also why not be on flight following just in case of emergency? It’s free. Just seems like it would be much better ADM and risk management.
I am not an aviator, but used to live in the San Fernando Valley; there is a LOT of air traffic if they were to do what you suggest. Lots of low-lying mountains, including just north of Camarillo. Lots of urban area all the way to Long Beach, where there is lots of air traffic from the several airports one would cross. Van Nuys and Burbank, Santa Monica, LAX, just to name a few. Just knowing the area, the risks are better just heading out to sea from this particular airport in my opinion, and like I said, that is just from common sense point of view, not as an aviator in any capacity.
@@culcune it’s actually a really common published route over LAX, I’ve done it several times. There’s actually several published VFR routes. Get ATC flight-following and they’ll vector you around any traffic, it’s the way to do it. I mean that there’s a lot of air traffic speaks to the fact that this is the way to go.
@@jm1178 I’m a pilot and have flown this route several times. What about you, snowflake? I’m guessing you just like to talk big 😂
@@brians2808 Fair enough. I think I would take my chances, and even do the scenic route over the other Channel Islands. I am not an pilot, nor play one on TV, but that would be my preference, at least from Camarillo.
@@jm1178 haha, being an actual pilot who flies actual planes around SoCal makes me a lot more an authority than you. Haha poser.
As a lifelong student I look for things that make a difference, and different will get attention where normal often won't. That being said, the way you yell clear will definitely get attention. Since I am attempting to be the most prepared student ever when I begin my training, I have been practicing that in my car.... I get a lot of weird looks yelling clear that way at the gas pumps, but that just proves it works, right? :)
Yes. It does prove it works! My point exactly!
I always jump from Long beach so I have only 5 minutes out of gliding distance to either side. Even then live vests are recommended. Pretty ballsy to go all water way.
I agree! I am based at Camarillo and I go through the Class Bravo via the Special Flight Rules area or get a clearance for the Shoreline Route so that I leave the shoreline over Long Beach. I have inflatable life jackets and I wear them for the entire trip.
I'm ready to say the Word !! Cleeeeeeaaar out long and loud 😂! Like you and oh it's going to be fun doing it !! Thanks
Every landing you walk away from is a good one🤣
Riiiiiight!
And an excellent landing is one were you can fly the aircraft afterward.
I truly loved this one, this is what flying should be
Best first date ever on youtube.
only one thing i have a 150 and i am big guy like this guy is if you have to ditch it will be hell getting out of that plane in the water
True dat.
Why get out, just go down with the ship ha ha ha.
Great video. Steven seems legit:) happy flying guys.
Would have been fun to fly with him more.

HEY YOU, YEAH YOU! I'M GONNA HAVE YOU FOR LUNCH
Awesome video. You crack me up. ANd hey, thanks for getting that dang "guy on a buffalo" song stuck in my head! LOL!!!
cleaaarrrrr!!!! anyhow... crosswind landings are hard :P
That was an “arrival” more so than a landing. But we are watching the video so it was fine! Great vid
Yes it was! Funny way of putting it.
Nice landing bro! I'm training out of Hawthorne and can't wait to fly to Catalina some day!
Hey Chris, thanks for sharing this informative & awe inspiring video.... I am of course referring to Guy on a Buffalo. To heck with this aviation themed nonsense! 😜😂
Bahaha! Doing gods work.
@@angleofattack 😂😂😂
That second landing was fine. 😂. I came here specifically to see the multiple Guy on a Buffalo references…. So, on my first cross country last week, (in a Cessna 150!) we were going into a class D and they asked me to report a 5 mile right base… so, (because I watch you) I clarified… and was told to make a right base for a 5 mile final… which seemed nuts because that took me right over a University Campus… we did it. When we were fueling up, the local flight club guy said they do that so you get used to flying a long final in case they put you in line with the commercial or private jet traffic. To which my CFI asked, “how do they expect a 150 to stay out in front of a jet?”… 😂. The local guy said he’s asked them that and they just shrug. 🤷🏽
Oh, I have all I can do not to scream clear, or sing “Guy on a Buffalo” when flying with my CFI… he doesn’t have that sense of humor.
proper clearance should have been "cleared left base for 26 to intercept a 3 mile final." Wouldn't that be worth a call to the boys in the tower?
The clear is freaking hilarious.. and the buffalo song?!? What the he... eh this was a fun one man! I’m not even going to ask what the Buffalo song is all about...I’ll leave that baby to rest for a while hah
No way man. That’s the song that keeps on giving!
haha its so fun seeing my favorite youtubers come around my home area. I fly to Catalina all the time from Carlsbad (KCRQ)...by far one of my favorite things to do!
Just like Alderney, Channel Islands in the UK only larger with Buffalo.
Guy on a buffalo...😂😂. Stephen's Cleeeahheeeear was epic. 😂😂😂😂 What a lovely trip.
Really kool vid, hilarious video. Guy on ah Buffalo hoooo 🤣🤣😂😂🤣🤣😂
Aviation is neat in the fact that you end up in the cockpit with people you have just met. However, even when trying to make a good impression, you need to speak up when you don't like something the other person is doing in the cockpit. It's definitely uncomfortable but a lot less uncomfortable than having a pilot error accident.
Those Casino views.
Great video. I found your channel a few months ago and really like your style, humor and knowledge. I live in Camarillo, are you from around here originally?
Some of my in-laws live in Ojai. We visit often. I also did my commercial at KCMA, so I have a lot of connections there.
Hahaha "Turn comments off"
Still a good landing even off of center line with that strong crosswind.
Great trip Chris. Real adventure flight and a good destination. I feel a bit uneasy doing the 22 miles over water to France from England! If you make it over the pond, I can't offer you any buffalo here but I could fly you over the creeks seal watching 🙂 👍 🇬🇧 Tim Palmer
WHEN CHRIS HITS THE RIGHT KEY ON THE BUFFALO SONG FREAKING TWICE OMG! Perfect pitch bruh?
Yeah buddy!!!!
What a cool adventure!!! Who would take a boat if you have a plane and love to fly!!! That controller “3 mile base” was misleading, I interpreted it as enter a 3 mile base as well, not 3 mile final... odd way to control. I think a enter left base for 3 mile final would of cleared it up.
Yeah. It’s all good. They do good work. Maybe it’s a local thing?
Angle of Attack hard to judge where to aim for a 3 mile final anyway.
I believe he meant 3 miles from the airport on left base. Not on final. It's a common call.
@@jwald6795 the way he said it, was not really the way id expect to hear it. I’m sure the pilots that fly there regularly know what they mean, as Chris said, probably a local thing. Which it would amaze you how often a local thing that you don’t even realize is local, is completely different then what other areas are doing
@@AkPacerPilot It was clear to me what he meant. He said report 3 mile left base for 26. He didn't say anything about final. He had other traffic in the pattern on a right base for 26. The controller wanted to know where he was at 3 miles out.
You haven't lived until you venture to the West end, which is the best end; to Two Harbors. There you hit the Harbor Reef and get a "Buffalo Milk" and a "Catalina Punch" (both native cocktails to the island).
Does that mean I have to go back?
@@angleofattack Absolutely. It's a bit of a drive to get there from the airport, but well worth it.
Bears better watch out for a guy on a buffalooooo!
I saw an airplane being closely shadowed by a flying saucer!
Been to Catalina twice for the $200 burger. Nice video.
No kidding.
Chris, liked the video reminds me a 🇬🇧 equivalent You Tube video by The Flying Reporter here in England flying from Redhill to Alderney in the Channel Islands. He cannot yell Cleeear as well as you do but you should check him out.
Let's be honest, can anyone yell it as well as me?
You should put your aileron towards the wind at all time, a mistake that can cost you an accidental runway excursion. It's a mistake that everybody make at first! Even at low speeds, it's a good habit to have!
I have to remind myself: full aileron, full aileron, full aileron cause I live in an aera with 15kts crosswind at all times!
Great video though!
LOVE Catalina! thanks for sharing!
…Guy on a buffalo-ooo *sing*
I think if I ever see a Chris in the wild I am just going to shout "Guy on a buffalo!."
Great Video!
I love it Man!! I can't wait to do it 😅😅
Awesome!
Phenomenal.
Love this video! Been laughing my butt off about 'guy on a Buffalow . . ohhhhhh'
On a serious note, controller said "enter a 3 mile left base for 26" 24:01
I think I would have understood to continue my heading until 3 miles out to a point of the commencement of the turn to left base leg, made my turn and proceeded. But, who knows what I would have done because I don't have the visuals you guys did. And then there's the 'instructional' reprimand by Tower 24:51 with your sound of surprised disdain and concerned looks. Love that!
But could controller working Tower have been more clear? Still not sure what he meant as I sit here contemplating. I thought you made your turn 3 miles out and were following landing traffic ahead when, thus already covering 1.5 miles prior to the admonishment "That's not a 3 mile left base, that's a 1 and half mile left base by the way"
Would like to hear your thoughts again and perhaps see something more on this from you as a topic if you feel so inclined. : )
Glad I'm not the only confused one.
I tried the "CLEARRRR" today. Only 1/10th as good as yours
Keep working on it!
Typical CFI...."I don't have $10" HaHaHa.. I kid, I kid. That was fun. Someday I will be able to finish getting my license and a sign off from my club to go out there on my own. It really is a magical place to visit. I am local in San Diego and it is THE local attraction for pilots with visitors new to the area. I am not qualified to judge that landing either, as a student pilot ALL my landings look worse than that. Much fun. Thanks.
I'm a partner with some other guys in a 150. Super cheap. Super fun. And yes... Super slow :)
technically your second landing [post bounce] did look VERY smooth, so,,maybe $5? that damn thing is WAY too "cozy"...
That was a fun video. Thanks lol
You bet.
What was the gross weight of the 150 with both of you in it lol
Was that a practice formation landing at Catalina? Keeping it on the left side of the runway was perfect then.
Dear God, why am I now narrating everything I do!!! "There he goes, he's commenting on UA-cam, Guy on a Buffaloooooooo! Hey look at that flying video there, that's a good one, oh look there's some Buffalooooo"
that landing wasn't bad.. you know the saying so I won't say it.. lol. but you walked away.. and flew the plane again...
$35 landing fee. Website says restaurant is open, but its closed. No shuttle to town. $35 just to land. Like a speed trap...
haha miss the CLEAR!
Oh and by the way that needs to be a ring tone 😂
Hold it off on the Cross wind correction and by the way what were the winds at Catalina?
this is awesome have a great day
What altitude are you at going there and back?
can I ask what was the reason for that bounce ? it looked like a good round out and speed. I did exact same landing today but wasn't sure if speed was fast or too flare at the end
F'n Catalina wine mixer!
Slowest airplane? I have a 7ECA that would be happy to challenge that ;)
Does anyone know the name of the movie with the guy riding the buffalo? First movie I ever remember going to see in the theater. I am 51 so this was in 1978.
Hey what music track is that. That really cool🔥
Awesome! Let’s fly Stevo.
If you are ever back down in Camarillo hit me up!
Tight fit!
My fault
