*Today is his birthday. He had only 20 of them*.
*French mathematician Evariste Galois* was born on this day in *1811*. His life was full of *promise*...and *turmoil*. He made major contributions to math while still a teenager, and his work was fundamental for several different fields of math including Galois Theory and Group Theory. *Sadly, he died in a duel when he was only 20*. Hear about his brief impressive life in our *Great Thinkers* video series.

It's so true - imagine if someone like Galois or Mozart had lived until their old age...
Not very much I'd presume, his personality is his mathematics. Being so different and out there led to the same in his maths. This is true for many other mathematicians as well as composers. Their 'odd' personality creates beautiful maths.
He would have been a mathematician of the standards of Newton, Euler or Gauss
IF HE DID NOT FIGHT A FKING DUEL!
WHYYYYYYYYY?????
And Mozart would have been such a composer that Beethoven and Bach would be irrelevant
Careful: by "no general formula", you mean "no formula involving finite algebraic operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and root extraction".
For example, Bernd Sturmfels has given a general formula in power series/infinite series for any polynomial.
Yeah, you're right. She probably didn't say that because it would be easily understood to be this and also it would be unnecessarily convoluted to explain that it is 'no solution by radicals', (i.e. what you said)
History of Mathematics has always been one of my favorite topics. Thanks for talking about Galois!
My favourite mathematician. Quite a back story. Amazing.
I express my gratitude and respect for a teenage and talented genius Mathematician....EVERSTE GALOIS.🙏🙏🙏 from India.
True, maybe a comfortable long quiet life as a baker or an accountant and no duels would result in no art!
Actually , Abel was the one that proved the insolvability of the 5th grade equation in it's general form. Galois gave the condition when a specific 5th grade equation is solvable with radicals. This paper started the group theory as we know it nowadays.
The picture on 3:18 is an illustration to Pushkin's poem "Eugene Onigin".
Nice and interesting video. Compliments for the perfect french pronunciation, which is not so common.
She os a famous Brazilian actress. Ber Wikipedia page says Ber fatjer was a diplomat
Amazing video. I can't wait to see which great thinker is next!
sad but persevering. thanks for the advanced work galois it's French . you helped the world.
This is 2018, reed Solomon brought me here. shocked to see his contributions before the age of 20.
thank you so much.
great job it's a very nice presenatation
Thanks
Oh my...
I love you Liliana!! I love your videos I´m mathematician I Know Galois´s life pretty well he was so good at math!!
Cool channel. You may consider doing a video on the great thinker. R.A. Schwaller de lubicz. No one has contributed to Egyptology as much as he has.
this is real tragic
VERY USEFUL VIDEOS FOR LEARNING MATHEMATICS
Hi Socratica. I noticed that around 1:29, you list out the cubic formula and quadratic formula. Could you please post a link that shows both in full? I would really appreciate it if you post the link.
I'm also almost 19 and I now think I've just wasted 19 years of my life.
His life was worth more than mine which I haven't used properly so far :/
You didn't choose to waste 19 years of your life, alot of it can be blamed on the uninspired society we find ourselves in, there is plenty of time to remedy that, after all you aren't planning to have any duels any time soon right?
He's a one in 10 million genius, there's no point in comparing yourself to him
Also he died being a simp
I thought the same at 24: Napoleon and Alexander and most mathematicians or rock stars had reached success and glory by that age. Now I'm 58 and, although I haven't performed, I understood that the idea of life having some worth is aburd and irrational. Just don't waste time by postponing your projects. Life is 'now', neither in the past or future. Àd don't expect recognition by others: do it for yourself, not for 'worth'. 😽
Late to the party ^^
But for people interested in the life of Galois and the transformation mathematics underwent at the beginning of the 19th century I can recommend the book "Duel at dawn" by Amir Alexander
I love you Liliana
Ms. Castro has show her skill not only as a Presenter of Abstract Algebra but as a Presenter of Biographies as well. True, I would have liked to have seen some detail of the mysterious Stephanie who was related to the demise of Galois, but this is still a good solid presentation.
I am also finding that Liliana de Castro is also an interesting person who had a past as an Actress. My suspicion is that she was getting Math and History Degrees between her Acting Gigs and that she is probably going for a Doctorate in something like Instructional Technology. Hence my request for her Biography.
PS: I like to see her as a Co-Presenter with Martin Poliakof of Periodic Table of Videos.
It's really hard to be at the forefront of mathematics. Most people are about 2,000 years behind. I have a bachelor's and I think I'm still about 200 years behind.
You are a genius
Never would have heard of Galois if not for this playing in my headphones as I play Warcraft. What an interesting young fellow he was.
Who would you most like to see next? We're making more videos all the time. Stay tuned!
I'm in love and Im not even a mathematic man!
great video! Interesting info, and Liliana is beautiful as usual!
Galois brain was the most original brain i have ever heard of...only one in 200 billion people would solve 350 years old MATH problem as teeneger Is Galois one of the greatest MATHEMATICIAN of all times yes and one of most dramatic story in MATHEMATICS history died so young yet so important contributions in MATHEMATICS lived just 20 years but was able to solve 350 years old MATH problem, shortly after his release from prison, where He stayed one year Galois fought in a duel and died of the wounds he suffered. Worked at Scuola Normale Superiore in Paris. The age is not important some people living 100 years 0 contributions how much brliant one can be to live 20 years and be called as father of abstract algebra is Mozart of MATHEMATICS He may fail university entrance exam first attempt as Mozart failled opera competition where Antonio Salieri won or Terry Tao failled some questions in international MATHEMATICS Olympiad but these things are less important you can be MATHEMATICIAN without going to MATH faculty as i am now Ramanujan also failled university in India but Cambridge accepted Him this is not making less brliant you win some you lose some His discoveries are worth any prestigious university degree If Hawking with IQ 160 gave so much contributions in Astrophysics MATHEMATICS Genereal Physics Cosmology how much Galois would give with 170 IQ if He lived not 20 years but 80 years you can calculate estimate 😯🤐Take my example i studied at university of Bologna and Pisa 0 contributions just a MATH Teacher 0 contributions in MATHEMATICS Galois didn't study anywhere age 20 solved 350 years old MATH problem and worked at Scuola Normale Superiore in Paris fonded by Napoleone education has nothing to do with IQ Galois as tenegeer began to do discoveries in Advanced MATHEMATICS Higher MATHEMATICS but lots of Harvard university laureats staying at home and don't know what to do...
Thank you for posting this and the others. I will be sending my students here frequently!!! So good!
Jonathan Ursin Thank you so much for sharing our videos, that is great to hear! :)
awesome
Hello, can you give me more information about him
Andrew Wiles thanks you...
Galois really invented the concept of groups, or at least their application to the roots of polynomials.
@The Ultimate Reductionist - I found this comment very intriguing!
are there hints that the norwegian Sophus Lie may have been influenced by Galois's work?
@@moegreen3870 I think Lie was more influenced by Abel (also Swedish). Galois' work didn't become well known before two decades.
Genius with guts 🔥
Well,he failed to calculate his opponent...
Actually he didn't.
He knew he was going to die.
That's why in the night before the duel, he spent all of his energy writing down his ideas.
He unfortunately fell in love with a married woman, and her husband found out. Well...
@@rezopolis he did not know hr will die , he knew therr's a chance that he would dir that's why he sent thr letters.
@@hurrricane going against a widely known bully popular for killing his opponents on these duels? yeah right... he knew 100% that he was going to die.
@@rezopolis Thanks didn't know that. Really sad. Death was too much of a punishment.
@@N0Xa880iUL the details of the duel and its causes are unknown, it wasn't punishment though, he could chose not to duel, likely his short temper flared and killed him
Damn, sounds like he was a total damn nutcase in various ways. I'd have loved to meet him!
One of the sadest stories of all time.
Hermosa, me encanto, soy matemático.
Demasiado inteligente la chica y demasiado hermosa me gusta además mejoro mi inglés es bilingüe y tiene excelente pronunciación en ambos idiomas
Galois didn't prove there aren't radical formulae to solve polynomial equations beyond degree 4. Abel did that.
Along with Abel, a once in 500 years mathematical genius. Like Mozart or Schubert, who also died relatively young, one wonders what things could have been composed or problems solved if they lived 20 or even only 10 years longer.
I don't know if he was a once in a 500 years mathematical genius, Gauss and Euler had arguably more talent. But it was an elite genius indeed.
You know, a lot of guys only find a women's physical appearance attractive. But this women shows how beautiful a person can be, when the mind and face match in beauty. The world would be so much better, if we held intelligence higher than looks. Physical beauty fades, but if you find an interesting and intelligent partner, your life will be filled with knowledge. And the beauty of learning never fades with time, it only grows stronger!
Miss you are like music.
Hi! Are you Brazilian?
Loss of control between fire and ice.
How do you pronounce "Liouville" again?

Theres a sense of humour embeded to her natural character
Queensryche- Silent Lucidity
I felt like this video was an attempt at mass hypnotism, anyway, nice to know about Galois
HOW IN WORLD ! AN ANGEL!
Evariste si applica al problema e scopre una cosa nuova, nuovo concetto d'applicare.. ed entra nella storia
your T-shirt is very beautiful, how can I get one
You can train 3 years for a MATH exam and score 20 out of 20 or you can train 1 day be rejected does it mean the one who scored 20 is smarter from the one who trained 1 day? Of course not to put equal measure you must give equal conditions and time that's why Galois is the goat) because he hadn't time to train enough for French Politecnico from where was rejected)
Galois
Beautiful lady.
🤯🤯
No, it' should be Abel's proof. And is that his life too short or this video too short.
Alexander Hamilton, the guy on the $10 bill and my favorite Founding Father was another brilliant genius who died in a duel with the arrogant Aaron Burr. These guys often have little patience with those less intelligent as was the case with Burr. Hamilton’s eldest son had already died in a duel…
i enjoy looking to you rather than the contents of ur videos
Well done Liliana. Your presentation was wonderful! If Évariste had met a girl as nice as you he'd have been more careful with his life.
Your eyes are sooo mesmerising, babeh...
Dying at 20 is hard very hard
His IQ is estimated 170 now we know that IQ 170 could enter any prestigious university that He likes even Prinston if you give Him little time to prepare)
Nowadays, 6-7yrs old kids having Gf and bf whereas this menace came up with a theory which get the mathematicians depressed ☠☠☠☠☠☠❗❗ Lord for a reason🗿🗿🗿🗿🗿
“Troubled genius”.
What kind of Gal, are you Lois???
Fermat from the margins ☕
Tortured Genius! So sad.
The greats usually get rejected at their interest
GALOIS DO NOT DIE IN "MORTAL COMBAT"...
Galois based af.
And there is a college students nowaday in age 20 who can't properly solve a quadratic equations.
RIP Galois 🖤
Ahh I need to date person who also obsessed with Math 😂
Now that's a man
What a tragedy
I subscribed to your channel because you are a very beautiful and intelligent woman
U r really very very beautiful
Not so great thinker, if he was trying to steal another man's wife, and getting killed in the process, while being young, extremely talented and a woman about his age would have been no problem to get married too, having a life free of much problems, because of his talent and contributions to the Field of Mathematics; hence thinker doesn't mean wiser, small but important difference, he didn't learn and that cost him his life
His math discoveries allowed us to play CDs, create QR codes, and see perfect images from outer space.
Really? I know a lot goes into that stuff. I just can't follow it all.
No
Yes. The Reed Solomon algorithm is based on Galois fields. They are used extensively wherever you may have high rates of data loss that can span large gaps of a data stream.
@@ryanmcgowan3061 Thank you!
That was not his contribution to mathematics. Galois discovered that symmetry plays an important role in the universe and set to work on symmetries, eventually creating Group Theory, a novel way to do math. A century after his death, it was found that elementary particles (subatomic particles) originate from spontaneous broken symmetry and thus, many unknown particles were found using Galois Theory. Today, there's an important scientific magazine named Symmetry.
