I so completely respect the judge for adjourning this for a day in order to NOT react against the defendant for his lawyer's extremely ignorant statement! I'm reminded of the opposite reaction I saw on Court Cam where a defense lawyer refused to waive the right to a speedy trial for his client and the judge ended up literally brawling with him off camera in the hallway. Judge Simpson is one of the good ones - tough but fair, and willing to give truly repentant people the help they need to get back on the straight and narrow.

As a retired trial attorney, I have a great amount of admiration for Judge Simpson. His willingness to acknowledge he is no less human than any of us only increases my respect for him. He knows his job and he honors his commitment to that job by making as sure as he can fair treatment towards the defendant by refusing to make him collateral damage to the ire raised by defense counsel’s incredibly rude attack on Judge Simpsons ethics. Law nerds, students and practitioners: take note of what you should be doing if one day you are either in court as an attorney or as a judge.

I am a practising barrister, and I am appalled by this lawyers comment. We all make mistakes and I know how easy it is to speak out of turn, or to word something incorrectly, or to have the court misinterpret something you said...
But I'm appalled that he didn't apologise immediately and profusely. He spoke ignorantly out of turn and in frustration, and I'm sure judge Simpson would have accepted an apology.

I like that when Judge Simpson gets really mad he breaks for a recess. In this case, he goes even further and adjourns the proceeding to give himself a chance to cool down. It is good that he gives himself time to get his emotions under control so he isn't ruling while being heated.

    • @boooster101

Some (shady) lawyers throw out this sort of insinuation on purpose, in order to provoke a reaction they can use to disqualify the judge. It's because they realize their argument is weak - if they have one at all - and they're trying to save face by appearing aggressively proactive. It's a cheap trick that no one appreciates, prosecutors or defense, largely because it's how lawyers get a bad name.

This one was better than the one when the public defender told his client not to turn himself in since they were going to court in 2 days. At least that one the judge was able to stay seated. After he went off on the lawyer the lawyer tried to apologize and the judge said I'm not having any of that and I am considering filing a complaint against you. Right after he said that he told the court he's taking a 10-minute recess and went back to his office. I believe they took the client in the custody because when the judge came back the lawyer was gone and so was his client.

I thought she only worked in Saline, but apparently some Washtenaw judges rotate among the various court buildings. I also saw APA Jessica Blanch practicing in front of a different judge. Jessica looks like a runway model. She is over 6 feet tall, and she wears high heels. I literally bumped into her as we were both exiting the restrooms, and she absolutely towered over me. Judge Simpson is one of the very best Judges ever! I was absolutely shocked, horrified, and angered when I heard those words come out of that lawyer’s mouth. Shame on him - so much shame. Unbelievable!!!! I am still in disbelief!!!! I have never seen Judge Simpson this angry before, however, he is rightfully so!

It's quite humiliating to get a lecture like that. However, it's well deserved. That lawyer was out of line.

That was righteous pissed off. Judge Simpson LEANS OVER BACKWARDS to ensure defendants are given more than a fair shake. I was angry on his behalf for such an accusation!

I do love that about judge Simpson. When he gets hot he takes time out to cool off so whatever judgement he makes is impartial.

I am beyond my means right now after seeing that! Judge Simpson should have told his Bailiff to Handcuff the Lawyer and put him in Jail! I’m really mad at him! How dare you do that especially when you are in Court! Not only is that Disrespectful it’s shameful! I respect the Court and I respect judge Simpson!

That was like a gut punch. I think it's time for that lawyer to look at retirement. He won't be able to come back from those words. I've seen Simpson pissed, but not to this extent.

Holy fluffing reindeer farts you can see the sheer rage judge Simpson is holding in especially when he is sitting there at the end. He has always been a fair and impartial judge and that attorney is about to fall off a very high cliff.

Wow I’m not sure how to make of this one, but to get get judge Simpson to almost drop an f bomb himself in his court is saying something. I’ve seen a lot of judge Simpson to know he is a very fair and understanding judge and he let’s a lot of things slide, but to see him have to compose himself and take a pause before he breaks his own court rules is humbling and why I have respect for him.
Also I respect judge Simpson for delaying the bond hearing another day to allow not only himself to calm down but everyone to calm down and present an emotion free proceeding (as much as you can take emotion out of something)
