    Just the way the music mood changes as the narrative changes shows just how much love and quality editing go into making videos like this. Don't think it goes unnoticed. It's not just the beautiful view that made this video great :)

      I do get the impression that you, Angela, enjoy editing and you have clearly learnt a lot on this channel. Can see how you are thinking throughout this video of how you will structure it in the edit. Perhaps you could reach a point where you have a portfolio of videos here where you can do some freelance editing work.

    Well done Angela ! I climbed Arthur's Seat on the morning of my 60th birthday, also in beautiful weather. The last section over the uneven rocks was exhausting but making it to the top was exhilarating ! I'd carried a small bottle of champagne, 2 glasses and chocolate truffles in my rucksack to have a toast on my special day at the top ! Half way up the climb we passed a small wedding ceremony taking place, 2 guys were getting married in kilts - a memorable day for them as well !

Fantastic views and loads of history, myths and legends associated with the area. I remember a really fun day when I took a young American lady exploring the park. A most beautiful corner of the UK with a lovely climate. Good to see it from a visitor's perspective and so pleased you enjoyed it.

  • @Michael75579
    @Michael75579 2 роки тому +4

    If you go up the other side of Arthur's Seat to the way you went there's a fairly gentle grassy slope that will take you about 2/3 of the way up. You miss Salisbury Crags that way though.
    The circular features are the sites of WW2 anti-aircraft gun emplacements.
    Arthur's Seat, Castle Rock and several other hills around Edinburgh are all part of the system of extinct (300 million years) volcanoes that Edinburgh is built on. In a lot of places - Castle Rock most obviously - they're eroded down to the central lava plug. The distinctive teardrop shape of the rock that leads from the Castle at the high point to Holyrood Palace at the low point is due to Ice Age erosion; glaciers scoured the topsoil and produced valleys either side that are now Princes Street Gardens and The Grassmarket.

  • @panchomcsporran2083
    @panchomcsporran2083 2 роки тому +9

    We have lost a few tourists over the edge of Salisbury crags. For those less inclined to be like mountain goats, the path on the other side is much easier .
    It is only 823ft high, the big hill you see in the background, with the dry ski slope (The Pentlands) is still under 2000ft a good challenge for next time you visit.

    The concrete pillar with a brass disc on top is known as a Trig Point (triangulation point) and there is one on the top of most high hills and mountains in the UK. They are used for surveying and map making. A guy I used to walk with set himself the task of standing on top of every one. I don't know if he has acheived his aim.
    The ring of bolts on the lower summit is likely to be a World War 2 artifact, either a gun or an observation point. Others will correct me, I am sure.

    • @kumasenlac5504

      Not sure what those bolts were but there are old shackles around the summit that were tie down points for Barrage balloons(WW2), that location wound have been great for search light.

    • @davidjones332
      @davidjones332 2 роки тому

      @@fasteddie406 I don't think that would be a searchlight mounting. To begin with you would need a 15 Kilowatt generator and the fuel to run it, or miles and miles of cable, plus it would take hours for a searchlight crew to toil up and down every night. Searchlights were normally positioned in groups so they could "cone" attacking aircraft to aid night-fighters or Ack-Ack batteries. I doubt it was a gun emplacement either, as you couldn't reasonably lug the ammo. or the predictor gear up there. Barrage balloons were normally tethered to a 3-ton winch lorry, so I don't buy that idea either.

    It's a shame hubby missed out on this (did he?) - but the personal presentation of the video ("one girl against a mountain") was fantastic.
    I nearly cried as you made the last few steps to the top - it was very powerful stuff as the big reveal was made!
    You looked so very tired and I was cheering you on - "you can do it! Just a few more steps!" (all that was missing was the massive big orchestra when you made it to the top!)
    Terrific camerawork - even the static shots, where you had carefully set up the camera so you would be exactly in frame.
    This is a very famous location in any movie showing Edinburgh ... every single one, whether it be Trainspotting, Eurovision or countless TV episodes, MUST have the establishing shot taken from Arthur's Seat!
    It's both the cheapest, and the best way to do it - no need for helicopters, CGI or drones.
    One camera, top of the hill, job done - It's almost as if the city was designed to be filmed!
    I've never been up there - been to "Auld Reekie" (the "Windy City") a few times, even gate-crashed their millenium party on Prince's Street on New Years Eve 1999/2000 (that was brilliant - a true adventure. I drove 80 miles with no realistic hope of beating security, and got in by walking through a churchyard) - but never climbed Arthur's Seat.
    I've seen these panoramic shots of Edinburgh many times - but your footage is the best, because it's more personal and less "glossy" than in the movies - which results in getting a true sense of just how awesome this is!
    Of course, nothing can beat seeing it for real - and you've certainly encouraged me to do that!
    Great work :)

When going back down instead of taking the man made path that wound around I thought I would cut corners and climb straight down backwards (because of its steepness) I was wearing unsuitable footwear, it was muddy and I was starting to lose my footing. The ancient building in the park is Holyrood Palace (the "Holy" part of the name is pronounced "Holi" as in "holiday"). Construction started in the early 1500s by order of James V, father of Mary Queen of Scots, but most of it dates to the 1600s. It is on the site of a former priory - later abbey - that was gifted land by David I back in the early 12th century. The "holy rood" means the "holy cross". So the palace is the "Palace of the Holy Cross".
    The park around it was originally the land granted to the priory. Today it is sometimes used for festivals and even demonstrations.

    Just next to Holyrood Palace ( the Queen's official residence in Scotland , where she visits annually in June and gives a garden party - or at least did) is Scotland's Parliament , re-established in 1999. The rock faces are called the Salisbury Crags , while the double hill that famously looks like a lion resting seen form the distance, is Arthur's Seat. Across the Firth of Forth is the Kingdom of Fife - where the 150th Open Golf tournament has just been held last weekend.

    You see, IMO, this is what tourism should be about. Obviously you have the tourist hotspots that everyone turns up to and photographs, then impresses their friends, then a month later are forgotten. You are doing it right. See the actual sights from the best visual perspective, something I always strive for when visiting another nation. Despite getting older I still try, just hoping that I can continue to get such experiences for as long as possible.

    When my hubby and I got married we were going to go two Europe on our honeymoon but then the car broke down dogs got sick we just couldn't go now we've been married 40 years and I am stuck in a wheelchair I've given up traveling because I just thought it would be way too hard but watching you too and watching your channel has ignited the travel lust in me again and I'm going to figure out how to rent electric wheelchairs over in Europe and we're going!

    • @jazzx251
      @jazzx251 2 роки тому +1

      looks like an electric wheelchair won't get you up this mountain (even if there was a ramp all the way to the top, it's so steep you might run out of batteries!)
      It's still worth the trip - most tourist attractions in the UK, by law, must provide access for disabled people - including at least one disabled toilet in every public building - even if that building is 1000 years old!
      But mountains are exempt! (unfortunately)

    Next stop for you young Angela is Ben Nevis, the UKs Highest Mountain. It took me about 4 hours to climb that with my 40LB backpack and nearly 6 hour to walk down again. At least the weather was good for your visit to Scotland.

  • @vereybowring

    "I'm too scared to get too close." natural survival instinct is quite healthy lol (and yes people have been blown off the ridge in stronger winds). "Down is usually faster" even discounting the whole falling off, twisted ankles are also an issue. The wind can get really strong as it gets funnelled up the Firth and further by Arthurs seat and the castle mount. It is a great set of walks as there are many paths up there. Loads of weddings also take place around the old chapel near the Loch near the bottom just east of where you started your walk (including some of my friends). I lived for a while in St Leonards so had a short walk to the base of Salisbury Crags. Luckily having grown up around the Cairngorms the hills didn't bother me much in Edinburgh lol

    Brilliant. Good effort, Angela. So glad you enjoyed climbing Salisbury Crags (where you had your picnic with the crow) and Arthur's Seat. I've lived in Edinburgh since I moved here as a 17 year old student in 1984. In those days my friends and I lived near Arthur's Seat and we climbed it (the hard, fast route, similar to the route you took) at least once a week, usually in the dark to watch the street lights. I hope you make it back some day. Thanks for the entertainment! 😘

      Oh, and the concrete pillar at the top is a trig point - or triangulation station. They are all over the UK on high points and were used by the Ordnance Survey to create accurate maps of the country, particularly for military purposes. Ordnance Survey maps still around and are just wonderful and I've never lived in another country that has such good maps available to the public. If you're my age, you grew up using them to navigate your way by foot, bike or car, anywhere in the country without being entirely surprised at what was round the next bend. Being able to use them is a skill that sadly, has not survived well, although it is taught in schools to some extent. GPS has short-cutted that learning need.
      As for the circular base you saw, I'd guess it was for a beacon (raised fire) or maybe some kind of military purpose but I can't find any info on it. So much of Britain is covered in old military facilities due to the many wars, internally, between England and Scotland, or externally such as the Napoleonic Wars and the Second World War.
