Welcome to the fifth video of this series, those of you who already follow us will know that the videos we post are normally short clips of an engine running after overhaul or when it first arrives with us. In this series after many requests we will be following the stripdown, inspection and restoration of a Gardner 6LXB from a 1972 Atkinson Borderer. In this video we continue begin the rebuild by reinstalling the crank into the crankcase, install the camshaft and roughly timing in the cam.

I served my apprenticeship with Gardners as a fitter. I remember doing all these jobs working in the various departments as part of my training. I eventually ended up working on the cylinder heads before been made redundant. I worked with a lot of great people. Happy days.

We had mostly British hardware upto the late 1960's in East Africa, Leylands, Bedford, Thames Traders, and for engines Petter, Cummins, Lister but I have never heard of Gardner or maybe I was still a little boy to know. Across the road to my dad's workshop in Uganda there was a workshop that serviced army vehicles, and I did see at times those heavy 1950's Scammel recovery trucks. So yes if these Gardners powered those trucks.☘

These videos of the rebuild / recondition of the 6LXB is such a great resource for referencing and appreciating such a great brand of motor.

Glad you enjoyed the video. I personally love the L3 / L3B's, beautiful engines. one things is for sure I cant think of any modern engines that look as good as a Gardner.

You can change the idler sprocket with the crank & damper in place, cut the threads down on the sprocket, remove a nut & spring on the damper, and knock the bolt back.

@@carllockpick6179 Thanks for taking the time to comment and hope you're enjoying the videos. Yes you can do it that way and good for an in the field repair, but cutting bits off isn't correct for a bare block rebuild. When we do an engine user modified bits, like that would be, that are not as per the original manufacturers design get filed in the bin 👍

@@MPSVintageDiesels ye I agree, but when a engine, needs to be on the road quickly, its a quicker & cheaper option. Carl ex Gardner fitter.

@@carllockpick6179 Definitely. especially when the alternative is taking the crank out.

Hi was a very informative video, mind I'm bias as I love playing with old engines anyway, as Roland says this engine is a work of art and deserves to be saved, well done guys, keep up the good work

Thanks for such a nicely detailed series on the 6LX, made me appreciate all the small design features that gave Gardner its legendary reputation.
One thing that puzzled me is why Gardner chose to have modular removable cam lobes, was this for ease of maintenance or for a lower engine profile where they didn’t need to package a cam with bearing races and lobes ?

LOL! A light tap... with your favorite sledge hammer. No assembly lube? Is that because you are going to be pre-oiling, or because you just didn't show it? These are really interesting engines. I remember seeing the Gardner logo on busses when I was a kid going to school by bus in the 70s, and to college in the 80s. So these were part of the soundtrack of my teens. I just checked and they'd be Daimler Fleetline which used 6LW, 6LX, and 6LXB. Of course I have no clue which ones I was sitting above at the back of the bottom deck.

Now this made me laugh. On these the centre main cap which I was aligning in the video is an interference fit in the crankcase. I could sit there beating the crap out of it with a 2oz toffee hammer but you will struggle to get it aligned. Doing it the way I did I know for certain it moves first time, every time and does no harm.
Oh and the engine has been lubed on assembly but as you have most likely spotted throughout the series there are steps omitted from what is shown. It's a constant trade off between filming the build and actually getting some work done. If there any steps you would have perticularly like to have seen let us know and I will endeavour to include it on the next engine build.
      Thanks for watching

@@MPSVintageDiesels I am fine with it the way it is. To me, an appropriately heavy hammer gives better control. Lower speed and no need to swing it over your head.

I'm new to your great videos and am binge watching. Thank you for not having that awful, awful "music" in the background. It's much more pleasant to hear your voice. Cheers

Glad you are enjoying the videos, As you have already found there was only one with music, which I wasn't sure on myself when editing the video. But as the time lapse sections are fairly long though it might work. It didn't !!.

We have had a few Gardner's through the workshop from Hong Kong, There is a 2LW back in our older videos here that spent its life in a water taxi in Hong Kong before we rebuild it for a new life back in the UK powering a narrowboat.
