  • This is a video-diary recording the forging of a Parang from leaf-spring which I had been commissioned to make. It is based on the parang of a famous bushcrafter whom I shalln't name for copyright reasons! Sadly my camera lost the footage of the heat treating and the sharpening so you guys will just have to make-do with the forging process.

    Good safety tip about gloves and machinery. I have an uncle that lost a finger because the glove he was wearing got caught in the chuck of a metal lathe. He knew better than to do that, but he just had a little filing to do. At my own job, they try to insist that I wear gloves around spinning parts. I refuse to do it. I can handle an abrade far better than I can getting wrapped up in a bandsaw blade grinder. Cool blades too, by the way.

    Great work really pleasing to watch. From someone who dabbles in blacksmithing and knife making, you make it look easy!

    Great works Rowan - you're a true tutor, and there is a lot of wannabies out there ... :D
    Did you mention that smithing on the edge compacts the steel and gives it a tougher edge when sharpened?
    BTW would you not please fix your anvil - I know of the inerts, but it makes me crazy to see it jumping around .. :D :D
    Have a nice one!

    Good stuff. I have a question about forging in general. Most old, used stock is pretty rusty. Does that have any negative effect. Is there a point where you decide something is just too corroded?

    • @RowanTaylor
      @RowanTaylor  8 років тому +5

      +eviltwinx it really depends what it is I want to do with it. Corrosion doesn't really matter if you are forging down to section. obviously a really rusty welding-rod is no use to man nor beast, but a corroded, wasted bit of 50mm square can be forged down to something useable.

    Hi Rowan, is it the DP 120 power hammer you're forging on?
    Cheers.

    • @RowanTaylor
      @RowanTaylor  8 років тому

      +Blacksmith Joe Indeed it is mate. They are very good hammers for the tiny amount of space they take up. Are you the chap who sent me a message on Etsy about them? Not had a chance to answer yet :/

    • @Blacksmith-Joe
      @Blacksmith-Joe 8 років тому

      I'm not the chap on etsy. Could you do a video reviewing the hammer.
      Cheers

    At 2:22, why does it look like the hammer is punching the heat out of the metal?
