Incorrect, most people just put the shitty guitar player on bass and we end up with an epidemic of shitty bass players. Sucks too, because guitar needs bass to fill in the low end.
Once I was playing acoustic guitar with my friends in a band and I was strumming f/a in a middle of a progression instead of f. The bassist who doesn't play guitar, sitting on the other side immediately asked me, "A?". That dude earned my respect straightaway.

Actually in my country, Greece. Musicians that lived in areas that were under poverty used to use tuned down classical guitars as bass and played only with a pick. And because they were used to playing guitar and didn't know any bass techniques they managed to create some pretty "irregular" but good basslines. I always feel I can play finger style on my acoustic because of me playing bass too , but the strings seem impossible to play with my fingers cuz they’re so much smaller than bass strings. Pisses me off 😒
Unpopular opinion: most bassists are better in guitar than the guitarists in their first band.
