I Can't Believe I Caught This Fish From a Canal!

- Well todays session took place on a very wet and stormy Autumn day. The plan of action was to hit the canal and use jerkbaits to target the bigger perch that live there! Unfortunately the river was in flood, so if I wanted some wild perch my hands were tied. The x-rap was the bait of choice and with the long pulls and pauses managed to get me some great action landing loads of fish including one really surprising catch! Hope you enjoy!

Your videos make me happy Chris, as am sure they do many, many others. Thank you - tight lines!
I've caught trout on maggot feeder on my local canal, the Aire & Calder, at Woodlesford in West Yorkshire. The canal connects with the River Aire at some points, so there are river fish in the canal, including some sizeable chub.
Where about on that stretch do you fish?
First fish I ever caught was same river at castleford, brown trout on a piece of corn, no idea how, never caught one since
I’ve caught a few small brown trout on a maggot and a float before
@@craigmk6 I fish the Allerton Bywater AAC stretch, which is the other side of the bridge to the lock. It's a featureless stretch and very deep for a canal but holds lots of fish.
Another quality video Chris . Best fresh water fishing channel in my opinion 👍🏻
I’ve just recently got back into my fishing, loving these videos👍🏻
There's always fish under a bridge when it's raining. They don't want to get wet! 🤣
That's what I always say 😂
The drops coming off the bridge excited them thinking bait
I dont go fishing but always watch your videos....always beautifully filmed....
Probably the most passionate angler i've seen on youtube. I used to fish the runs off streams from 3 dams called Greasborough dam in Rotherham area alot as a kid. yeah the big dams hold some big fish but you get alot more bites more frequently from rivers and streams it keeps things exciting. I've had some lovely fish and some times after the rains some wash over the water fall into the deeper parts of the stream i've had 20lb carp tench barbel perch bream you name it. And you can travel light too.
Hi Chris , yet again another top blog. And I have to say hand on heart I have never seen or heard of a trout caught in a canal ever before, so congratulations on that one.👏
That’s awesome! You’ve given me high hopes now. I’ve got a few canals in my area!
Cracking session that was mate 👍, I really miss my river and canal fishing use to have some cracking fish out, great video mate can't wait till the next one 👍 😎🎣🎣🎣
Quality video mate, keep up the great work 👌🏻👍🏻 I’ve never caught a trout out of the canal, but I’ve seen plenty of “old trout” walking along it 🤣
And "Thames trout" floating in it!
Spoiler alert
Bostin session there Chris and what a surprise with that trout! Really love the clear water pattern pike and perch, yours looked mint 👌
I've fished canals up down the country for nearly 30 years and a trout is a new un on me fair play mate 👍
... THE CANAL WHERE I LIVE I'VE CAUGHT A FEW BUSES.. 🖖😇
You certainly know your stuff , Great to watch .😁😁👍👍
What terrific outing! Thank you.
Another superb watch mate, love the slow mo action and fish takes. Just a question, i know the Euro guys are obsessed with only reporting the length of Preds especially Perch, but i always thought us Brits go with weight? Dont get me wrong i measure the length of a 20lb pike after weighing it but for me the length of a pred is never a gauge for weight.
It's probably 25 years ago since I last went angling, and things have changed greatly. I used to mix my own ground bait for carp... mostly bread crumb with added fennel seed... those carp and tench love the aniseed!
I have two favourite anglers... you for fresh water and John of The Fish Locker for sea fishing.
Wow that canal is alive and well ! Plenty of fish being caught well done bud some nice fish perch are always so impressive 👍
I have to say I’m really enjoying the latest crop of perch videos. Very skilfully shot and edited. I’m not too keen on live baiting to be honest, just a personal thing. But each to their own. But your crank bait and lure fishing is truly inspiring to watch. Unfortunately living where I do there are not that many canal systems. That’s why it’s so nice to watch you have at it! Hopefully you keep entertaining us all with the great stuff you are producing. Tight lines.
Spent all weekend stuck in bed sick and have just gone from video to video. Absolutely class videos that keep you entertained.
You must step in a fair bit of dog shit tracking up and down the canal banks 😂
That second pike you caught was about the size of the only pike I've ever caught! great video
There are Trout in my local canal, mainly around where a small feeder burn from a Loch runs into it. I imagine that's where they come from and like to stay around the area of the flow coming in.
Great video especially someone like my sled who’s just started to do a bit of lure fishing got a new technique to try. Keep you the great work 👍
"Oh no it's a pike" 😂 Chris you make me laugh bud! I know we're all after those fat perch! 💥😜
Cracking session Chris. That trout was a major plus. I’m a canal fisherman for 40+ years. 👍
Well fished again Chris. Makes me somewhat homesick as over here in Australia it's a totally different type of fishing.
Nice fish ,, monster perch,, Hammer handle pick ,, bounce trout
Thanks for sharing
yet again a great video, love this channel...keep it coming
Nicely done! The pike was a beauty...and the trout a nice surprise too!
Awesome stuff, wish had some of those in our local canals. I would certainly expand my video collection with some different species then.
Nice video, looks so easy. I caught today 5 pikes and a perch, wish i have that every day
Great catch. As a young man I caught a 2lb rainbow on the Grand Union Canal at Croxley Green
I caught one on the Lancaster canal after a flood , think it came out of the local fly fishery. great video mate, always enjoy them.
Where are you on the Lancaster canal. Where i am in Preston its absolutely covered in algae. Pretty impossible to fish now.
You ever get chance to fish Beeston canal near to Beeston trent wear, it's full of pike up to 20lb plenty mid doubles and perch over 3 half it's quite unbelievable from such a small body of water.
Hi Chris
Im still not sure why 2 trebles are needed for the inexperienced angler they will rip out the hooks i have seen some horrific damage done , i use a single barbless hook if i lose the fish there's always another to catch no damage done
Great video! I'll be watching more
xrap is my favorite lure. i buy all sorts of crazy looking lures yet still use the xrap 95% of the time.
Yes
Went to local canal today only too blank, so so muddy. Nice to see someone else catch. A massive congratulations on the trout though
Was watching a video about longboats yesterday and thought wonder if there is fish in them canals then found this, great video thanks for sharing
Love fishing in the rain i need to venture out to more rivers around the UK
Awsome bud. I belive there is Wells cats, zander, stergeon/starlet and grayling in our local canals. The trout was a super surprise also. 😮
Beautiful little brownie
We had a local trout farm burst its banks a few years ago and for a while we were catching baby blue and leopard trout in our local canal and also a few small nearby streams.
my American ear is hearing you say “poooooch” whenever you say perch. 😂 lolz catch them big dogs sir!
Quite the day of fishing…. I knew intuitively it was going to be a brownie. I find during colder weather trout, even brook trout like here in Canada, will enter boggy “bad” water to feed, as long as it’s cold.
Looks great fun. Do you primarily fish with a trace aswell if you know there's chances your going to pick up the odd pike aswell? Or risk it and just fish with mainline/braid straight through?
Trace. Always a trace! No pike needs that stuck in their mouth!
Another great video, still jealous of you but l can beat that trout,a couple of years ago I had a 10lb salmon on the Llangollen canal in the middle of a town called Ellesmere 50yards from Tesco’s it must of come from the river Dee over the Horseshoe falls!! Put it back but doubt whether it would survive or not.
That trout was so weird. I went for a perch session today and caught a SALMON out my local canal, completely by accident and it was covered in disease. Admittedly the river parallel is a salmon river but I wonder whether it’s the recent heavy rains
Canal trout, that's a first. Good video as always 👌
excellent autumnal trout 👍👍
Great Session Chris! cant believe you caught a trout in the canal! water must be connected to somewhere maybe? Canals have been very good to me recently with good results ☺
My old friend jan porter told me out of season fish can be court if not intended to and if the river is closed for the season you can still fish with 2oz lead and a size 6 hook and a bottom bait its the bigest loop hole ever i schooled a bailiff with that one good times
Jan was great!
5:30 “mon the fish” 😂😂
I'm just starting out spinning for perch and small pike, less than 5lb. Would you use a wire trace? What spinners would you use? I heard Mepps are pretty good.
Love your videos. Cheers pal.
There used to be a few trout in the canal further down from where you caught this at brace bridge
Some massive trout do be in canals
Was once a fisherman. Loved it. But slowly realised that my passion was causing pain and death. Now my greatest pleasure is seeing trout rising to mayflies on a summer evening without any intervention by myself.
Another great vid mate!
What landing net is it you use?
Its the Rapala Karbon all round net. I've put a to it in the description :)
very nice video .... very nice perch pictures...🤘🏻🤘🏻🤙🏻🤙🏻
greetings from switzerland
🔥🔥🔥
Fancy seeing you here 😁
The quality of your videos just continues to get better and better great viewing m8
Thanks buddy!
Why don't you fish the Trent? Never seen you catch a Zander???
Sea fisherman here, super video as always but are we saying in the colder seasons jerk and spinning dont work as well and dead baiting is the only way?
Caught a few trout and grayling in the canal at Llangollen courtesy of its feeder River Dee
10 years or so ago, I was spinning on my local canal and was absolutely hauling trout out of it. I've fished it for most of my life and never seen anything like it. Every time the spinner went in, it was pursued by 2 or 3 of them. They were very silver with all black spots and around 4-6ish inches long. My girlfriend that was with me said they looked like sea trout or young salmon. The canal does lead to a salmon/sea trout river, so maybe a load of them got a bit lost o_O Never seen it before nor since.
Enjoying the film. I love perch. Superb 😊
You can't beat a few hrs spinning ,,it's very therapeutic gets you out ,bit of excersise what's not to like 👍
Beautiful filming and editing..
Thanks buddy!
Hi Chris great as usual.i was on Shannon using kick back rig 2weeks ago ,but perch were passive after leaving on deck for 5 mins ,then they bit. Any ideas?
10:53 stunning perch
Top sesh!! Lovin’ it !
Great stuff Chris.
“😲 I’ve never caught a brown trout in a canal before that is awesome, let’s put him back”……… whoooooops 🤣
Yea there "was" a trout in the canal 😂
I stopped learning VOLA on guitar to watch this. I love the band VOLA, so you know how excited I must have been to watch this.
Straight Lines
Hi Chris. There were Trout in your canal 10 or 15 years ago, they got caught below the weir after the lock in the park.
Looking forward to watching this a bit later!! Took a day off work tomorrow to do a bit myself.
Wow Was not expecting that!! Top video as always!!
Good luck buddy!
@@The_ginger_fisherman thanks mate!
Good video again get trout in certain parts of the forth and clyde canal were burns flow into it the fish come down them into canal
Ginger Fisherman on a Sunday evening?
Hell the fuck yeah!
Great sesh, as usual Chris, keep 'em coming, please mate!
As I have found out over the years, fishing with live Minnows around fallen trees. That Really Big Perch (4-5 Pounders) are solitary Fish, and not In shoals. Another great Video, for those of us who can't get out anymore. Keep 'Em Coming Chris.
The reason they’re not in shoals is because they’ve eaten all their mates ! 😀😀
I caught a really tasty trout at the Basingstoke canal some many moons past. Very trouty country, and I wondered if it may have hitched a ride on a heron when it was fry.
I'm not even an angler, but really enjoyed that.
Great video Chris, that pause seem's to really switch those fish on.
Glad to see that you have got a new net & net magnet, the guy's @ Snagged Bro sell a good net magnet too ; )
All the best.
Cracking!
What do you think about clipping off one of the hooks on trebles? I've got into trouble before getting trebles out, when they get so stuck into more than one point... It seems to help, don't know if it leads to fewer hookups.
I catch doezens of Brown trout on small spinners at our local weir, more so than the perch :)
Looks like the Shropshire union around chirk.
this made me go check out those rapala lures and they are definitely a little pricey for me. I wish they made a few multi-pack combo sets like a lot of other manufacturers do so one could save a little coin by buying a set rather than one at a time for £10-13 a pop - I mean I would want to buy at least two or three to meet the different conditions id be fishing in anyway. I have no doubt the quality is absolutely top notch though compared to the cheap lures ive bought off amazon and ebay. (I run a mixed lure box with some decent savage gear, abu garcia and berkley lures too so im not totally a cheapskate!)
@Big Red Unfortunately thats the downside of lure fishing.
You either replace lures because you lose them to snags or you get something anyway because its new and shiny. Its a disease.
Either way. Not that the fish will know the difference between cheap chinese 4 for £15 lures vs the abu garcia's, savage gears, and rapala's 1 for £10+ lures anyway.
I'm still a bit hung up about it though. I cant find the cheap 6cm ones of these on amazon.
Cracking video again mate, would you do a video covering how you would use a Devon minnow? (Obviously it would be on the river next year)
Find the odd one in my local canal, usually from people live baiting for pike, and throwing them in when the session’s finished
I think that Perch are delightful fish. It horrifies me to see people fishing for them with barbed trebles. This isn't the 1960s!
Great video.
Best Regards from F'n'F Family Lincoln U.K
Iv never had a perch on a lure on Sheffield canal 😫😫😫 what am I doin wrong do you use multiplier reels?
9:47 bro ur hands with the Hooks.. full anxiety
I was fishing a canal probably about 10 years ago and a mate of mine caught a brown trout on a lure, I was pretty surprised
That canal is so so clear. Do any boats ever use it. The Ashby Canal is the colour of Chocolate
My gay boyfriend ( I am Straight) get so excited when you post, please do it on a Wednesday
I would love a good session with those euro perch! Here in Canada I've caught perch up to 35cm but most days and lakes 20cm is a good one. Not sure why they dont get so big in most lakes. Maybe too many predatory fish here to eat them? Who knows? Nice surprise trout BTW, Cheers Chris!
It's quite the opposite from my experience of having thousands of lakes and majority of them having perch in Finland. There's usually too many perch, too many bream/roach/whatever "junk" fish and not enough pike or a combination of those. Also zanders might take over their space. If I throw in a fish trap in the second biggest lake in Finland which has such problem, maybe 5-10 out of 1000 perch might hit 30cm on average.
@@seppomobiili316 very interesting! 90% of our lakes have perch in Canada but seems like average size is 15-20cm. Pike are the dominant species and are everywhere, which is why I assume the perch rarely get any bigger. The pike eat them, as do the lake trout and walleye (Zander). Seems like everything eats perch so they simply never reach the European size.
Brown trout in a canal!! That’s epic!! Top angling Chris!!🎣🎣🎣
Where is he fishing?????
sweet technique i'll be giving that a go in northern Ontario Canada on some big northern pike :)
