I was one of the few British kids that had a C64 and 1541, U.S. Gold allowed me to get much cheaper disk games, that before they arrived, I was having to buy imports!
A great budget compilation was Soft Aid with 10 games for £4.99 released in March 1985. The games were pretty average, but the value was incredible, just under 50p a game and if that wasn't enough, at the start on side 1 you also had an audio recording of "Do They Know It's Christmas?" by Band Aid. Here's the list of games: Gumshoe, Beamrider, Star Trader, Kokotoni, Wilf, China Miner, Gilligan's Gold, Fred, Gyropod, Falcon Patrol and Flak.
PS: The U.S. Gold - History in the Making compilation was probably the best compilation ever as in the best games and would have been incredible for someone new, but late to the C64 in Christmas 1988, but then I personally had all the games on it already. I however upgraded to a C64 in 1984 from a TI99/4A and by 1985 I only had one game on the Soft Aid compilation, also some games included were less popular, but still reasonable meaning less people had them. Budget titles were still new then too, Mastertronic released their first £1.99 games in April 1984 and most were poor at first, so 50p a game in early 1985 was a steal.
I remember Taito's Coin op Hits being a great compilation on the C64. Slap Fight, Bubble Bobble, Arkanoid 1 & 2 & Renegade all being fantastic ports. Flying Shark was an ok port and legend of Kage & Rastan, although not terrible are the weakest games on the pack. Well worth doing a vid on this gem of a compilation
Oh I just gotta rave about this collection taito legends two on PS2. 39 games loads of them freaking awesome. I been playing it for weeks. Also it got me onto the bust a move series! It's called puzzle bobble 2 on taito legends and I saw that title and immediately thought eh that's one I'll probably play once then never touch again. Liked it so much I ended up getting super bust a move for PS2 as well as bust a move four for playstation and even the ds bust a move. That series is awesome so intelligently designed. Although super bust a move 2 for PS2 (I got that as well! You can see I went crazy for this series lol) wasn't very good. There's a couple of things which ruined that game. Mainly the bomb bubble thing which breaks the game and uninspired level design. The others I've played are awesome though. Super bust a move 1 for PS2 is the best one. Anyway sorry for such a long comment 😂
@@Simon0 I would actually like OSG to look at some of these more recent arcade collections and let us know how many of the games have stood the test of time.
Fantastic compilation. Even the "lesser" games are still great fun to play, and I never understood why The Goonies game is always so underrated. It's brilliant!
Solid compilation. I remember playing all of these as a kid with the exception of Infiltrator, I may have to rectify that at some point. I managed to beat Beach Head and Impossible Mission back in the day, both are particularly proud gaming memories.
Impossible Mission. IMO the best game on the C64 ever, and I love a lot of them. To this day I complete it many times every year. Even though it's just down to how fast I do it now, it just never gets old. Every play through is completely randomised and unique. And two distinct phases of the gameplay; puzzle collecting (the action); and puzzle solving for the password (tip: always complete the former before attempting the latter). Both heaps of fun.
Fantastic compilation! Classic after classic, none of yer usual dud fillers either. I missed this having upgraded to Amiga that year, I would've deffo bought it even though I had a good few of the games alreadly just for the origianal boxes, a steal at £1.66 per title 👍
Express Raider - The arcade version has an American flag flying above the building on the first game screen, but yet the train is European. I'll never understand why all the developers of games with trains in them, did this. The Goonies - I liked this and managed to get to the last screen (the ship). I couldn't figure out what to do, and the need to start over from the beginning when you lost all your lives, kind of sapped my ambition to keep trying. Infiltrator - I had a copy of this, but never had the manual, so I had no idea what to do. In fact, I never even knew there was an on-foot section, I thought the entire game was flying the helicopter. Leaderboard - Actually, the original game, as well as the Tournament disk, had four courses each. Then there was Executive Leaderboard with only two courses, and finally World Class Leaderboard, which went back to four courses for the base game and each of the Famous Courses data disks.
No no, è davvero il gioco originale, si tratta di un Easter Egg attivabile premendo Shift e G, un pò sulla falsariga della Machine Gun che potevi utilizzare in Super Hang-On.
Osg that barrel jumping attempt was embarrassing. Landed right on the barrel lol. Just joking. I suck at that too. And in fact it was a decent jump. Make it two barrels shorter you would have been good. Ok ill stop commenting now i think its my fourth one lol 😁
@@oldstylegaming oh yeah I've not tried waggling with a thumb stick thing but yeah I can see how joystick would be easier. Thumb stick I would be afraid to break it if I waggled too hard. Joystick is more sturdy plus you have more to grab onto so you can waggle faster 😎
LOL, playing "Raid over Moscow" in "communist" Poland in 1986... priceless :)
Have to admit, never seen any better compilation on C64.
Thanks for the vid!
Thanks for watching mate
Beach head was just incredible! Medic! 😂
Your sense of humour is very slightly disturbing lol. Just joking 🙂

"Beach Head" was great, especially for 1983... we hacked that game, my father had 6-digit scores, the counter couldn't even display them :)
Had Bruce Lee did u ever come across a bug that crash whole game after u clocked it
@@jonnysmith7962 I don't think so but I'm not sure. I liked the Spectrum version more, anyway.
Man you’ve just unlocked a memory with this Road Runner game! I used to play the hell out of it! Totally forgot it existed.
had this comp as a kid in the 80s! so much fun, it was amazing!!! :D
Great video OSG. Awesome selection of games in that set. Santa knows his C64 games well!

Yeah hang on super hang on same thing mate to me it was shit

Had other game concerns at the time but WHAT a box set!
Seeing Beach head II gave me some "Ganja farmer"-vibes. Can't wait to see a review of that game :)
Well i learned something there. Kung fu master guy has a gun 😳. Kind of defeats the purpose of being a kung fu master 🤣
Gun fu master

Yeah mate I was a late starter, I only got my c64 in 88 lol

What is the song called that you use in your intro/outro? I loved it back in the day.
That's a remix of Martin Galway's Parallax theme.
@@talideon It's actually one of the Ocean loading themes, which was included in many games, including Parallax.
Yeah it's a remix of ocean loaders
To be honest, I'm probably glad I didn't see that at the shops here at the time because I simply wouldn't have gone to school.
Hahaha
I've been playing Bruce Lee again lately, I'm still bad at it but not as bad as back in the day! Great game.
Just for a second I heard "multiple flaws" until you added the context. I thought, "It wasn't _that_ bad...oh." :-) 2:04
those are great gamez my favorite being bruce lee!!! me and my friend thom usedto play c64 alot...
Amazing value for money, keep u busy for weeks
Your rep may have taken a hit after the Roadrunner comments...
roadrunner (this version) aint that bad, the Hi Tec version was shit though
DESTROY HIM MY ROBOTS!
I think you will find it's destwoy him my wobots lol
@oldstylegaming LOL those Wobots are pretty menacing!
Any chance you could have the game music quieter after each voice over. I love your videos but hate bleeding from the ears 😂
Be glad this isn't ZX Spectrum! :)
Super Cycle engine sound was melting my brain 🤣
ill take that into consideration :-) and sort it for future sorry
