Kate was so beautiful here. Reminds me so much of my own mother-God rest her soul.😓
Love Robert Culp!
There were some real cute touches in this: the opening with the kids at school, dogs with owners at the vets.
Sturdy black rotary dial phones. I remember those!
Remember when cordless appeared that was the stuff. Oh look I can walk around and talk, if only we knew what was to come.
Between this and Snoop Sisters, I'm in TV heaven right now!
So glad someone else is is enjoying the snoop sisters and Mrs Columbo. I have looked for them on every so often for 20 years. Yippee! I found them!!!!
Two future Star Trek actors here in this episode. Kate Mulgrew went on to play Captain Katherine Janeway, and Rene Auberjonois went on to play Odo, the changeling. I love finding coincidences like that.
Well Neelix and Odo were in Benson together.
Could just show how there is a shallow pool of actors who get many parts.
@@Cheepchipsable Oh yeah, they were in Benson together. Forgot about that. it's been so long that it seems like another lifetime lol.
I’ve been a fan of Kate Mulgrew since she was on Ryan’s Hope. She’s just so winsome
19:52 -- I love how, when she was in the waiting room, she noticed how the owners all look like their pets (or vice versa). And now, with the vet, she points out the her dog "has got no zest, no sparkle--absolutely no enjoyment of life." And the camera shows us that, while SHE and her dog don't look alike, the VET and the dog do.
So her comment about "no zest, no enjoyment of life" is really a comment on the vet's appearance.
So surreal seeing Captain Janeway and Odo in a scene together.
Star Trek metaverse right here, I mean Spock and capt Kirk was in some of the original columbo episodes.
@@Drummerchick2003 "Bill" Shatner pulled off perhaps his best acting performances as the culprit in both _Fade in to Murder_ and _Butterflies in the Shade of Gray_ (Columbo telefilms two decades apart).
@@bonghunezhou5051 I agree, he did actually portray two personalities, he even did well in both twilight zone episodes. Bonus if you can name both episodes without using any sources 🤣
I have never even heard of this, let alone seen it. I do like Kate though, there is something adorable about her and she reminds me of Katherine Hepburn. Thank you for sharing this gem with us all.
Have you seen/listened to Tea at Five? And you're very welcome. I try to share my Kate love wherever and however I can can.

Yes Kate Mulgrew did a very solid job as Mrs Columbo !!
@@seosamhofionnaghain6274 And Mary Ryan on 'Ryan's Hope'. Other than playing Captain Janeway on a version of Star Trek, I don't think I've seen her on anything else.
A professional would never introduce a potential murderer to a witness. 🤔
I wish they included a scene at the end with that cop apologizing to Kate for not taking her seriously.
My Mom had a gold station wagon like that shown in the film! Bought it in 1972 and still runs! She gave it to my brother who gave it to his friend! Brings back memories:) Enjoyed watching this as when this aired was busy busy going to college and working and never had a chance to watch much TV.
Thankyou... i cant believe i reached the age of nearly 53, without knowing Captain Janeway is Mrs Columbo. Honestly, it's made my day. She is a total dude.
Love mysteries of this era eg Columbo! She’s even driving his car!!
If Kate Mulgrew had portrayed the detective's daughter who inherited her father's savviness instead of his rather young wife this show would have had a firmer foundation and probably would have been more successful. I had learned that Peter Falk's actual wife was 22 years younger and appeared on his show more than once.
Mulgrew was 12 years old when Falk first appeared as the already-married Columbo. Ridiculous Mis-casting.
X 6 for Shera Denise - 2 when on NBC, and 4 more when on ABC as the revival series.
I've been searching for this!!! I could not find anybody that even REMEMBERED THIS short-lived series, people argued that it didn't exist even !!! Thank u soooo much for uploading!!! As I've watched every single Columbo episode at least 4 times, but. I've only seen this one episode 1 time about 30 years ago- I feel so lucky! Thanks again for your time and effort💚😍
@J R lol- my ex husband insisted there was no such thing! Perhaps that was a subconscious part of our " uncoupling" hehe
I remember it so well and was sorry it didn’t last long. It was cute😉🤣👍🏻
Same here, Shaelyn! I wonder if it's because people didn't like that they ended up divorced. Columbo was so loved, couldn't understand how someone could agree, even amicably, to a divorce. No chance of him showing up in an episode ever. 😒
@Kendrick Trey that's crazy I wouldn't like that but u could pull some fun pranks
"I know you don't love me anymore,I just want you to like me"😢
Was a big fan of Columbo; heard about but never saw Mrs Columbo. This is a treat!
Bob Dishy, who plays Sgt. Norris, appeared twice on “Columbo” as Sgt. Wilson. Great comic relief.
Figured that I'd seen that face before. Too bad they didn't keep some kind of continuity with the actor and the roles he played.
Hard to believe she’s now an Admiral and the french chap is a puddle

Yes Kate Mulgrew was excellent as Mrs Columbo.
Top class actress, Not surprising Kate Mulgrew went on to become a Star Trek Captain in later acting roles.
This movie was really great. I love 70s and 80s TV.
That cop did NOT just introduce her to the guy she said she overheard plotting to kill his wife!!!!
That was a total jawdropper!
How that cop ever made it to be sergeant is beyond me.

The corrupt sgt. even claims Columbo "would have done the same". I doubt that very much.
I think its called "artistic licence" when a writer knows the story beat is nonsense, however its done for speed, convience, or in this case to keep the story going and add a little drama... Least i hope whoever wrote that scene knew it was BS.
Extremely eerie death scene with excellent acting by Frederic Forrest and the great Edie Adams.
It’s not just her age (12 years old when Falk first appeared as Columbo) that makes the connection to Columbo not work. They’re a Mis-match in every possible way. Columbo is this aggressively working-class, rumpled, studiedly unsexy, middle-aged working-stiff policeman. Everything he ever said about his wife painted a picture of a frumpy, unsophisticated, middle-aged woman. She painted on paint-by-numbers canvases as a hobby. She was explicitly described as overweight. So they cast a glamorous 23 year old with an overtly patrician accent, and portray her as this urbane sophisticate. Crazy.
Maybe Columbo was fooling everyone because he didn't want anybody knowing his wife is young and hot badass lady. Kinda would ruin his whole unsexy simple old dude shtik :)
Yup. Columbo/Peter Falk was born either 1927 or '28. He served briefly in WWII (Merchant Marine). He would've been 51 of 52 in '79. Well, maybe Mrs. Columbo has "daddy" issues.
@@neilmanhard1341 well, his real wife was 22 years younger, and this one looks ten years older than she is, so it all makes sense 😁
Wow, never ever heard of this, love Kate!! I'm presuming it's little known as it didn't run for long, another guess is that people didn't like it's premise, No Columbo, a great shame, a decade later it probably would have flown. Many thanks for a great upload x.
This is FUN I've never encountered before in many years of tv viewing. About to launch on to the rest here on You'tube. yep..fabulous fun!!
─Just one more thing! ;) : Thanks for uploading!
Kate is so great!!!! I love Henri Jones in this episode! The dialog is amazing!
Thanks for sharing I loved watching Columbo mystery show and Mrs. Columbo. Great show.
Oh my God is Mrs. Columbo, Captain Janeway!!!!! Holy crap
Quite literally, YES!!!! There is so much in Mulgrew's characterizations of "Mrs. Columbo" that are the same as Captain Katherine "Kate" Janeway.
That's it - if there's a murderer on the loose leave the balcony door open
I didn't know she was 22-23when she did this.
She did an EXCELLENT job playing a 30-something wife & mom, in my opinion!
That's what happens to your appearance when you smoke three packs a day.
I really don't think Kate Mulgrew was that young as Mrs. Columbo. She had around a half dozen years on Ryan's Hope, for one thing. She was no teenager as Jack Fenelli's wife, and she had to have done something before that, to get the role. You could tell 'Mary' and 'Maeve Ryan' were pals in real life and Kate was eating up the training from that great actress. But she had to have brought something to the table as a younger actress, and she was just soaking up what she learned from the others around them as well.
@@deannasisson2500 This one premiered 1979 or earlier, & if i recall, the TV critics or someone mentioned her age when the series debuted.

It's cute. She's a star. I can't believe she is 22 and suppose to be married to Columbo….
Kate Mulgrew was born in April of 1955. In 1979 she would be 23 or 24.
wetcircuit I WAS THINKING THE SAME THING. I think that’s why they changed the name to “Kate loves Mystery’s.
@Nuclear Christian No it was cause the shpw had terrible ratings and they were afraid it would affect columbo

Ya we did ALL of this feminine hijacking bit 40 years ago. And it also happened 40 years before that, too. We forget mistakes so we repeat them. Every new generation thinks they have the answer & the old guys are just too tired to even talk about it.
However, you do have Captain Janeway and Odo in scenes together....
I love that. Turns out Janeway had visited DS9, got her brain wiped by aliens, and is now in Quarks holodeck convinced shes investigating a murder!! (side note Picard recommended the program). Odo is there to make sure shes safe
Wow I never watch this before,, love this show!!
Who woulda guessed that a guy with a name like Renee Abergenois would be playing a part where he's giving French lessons?
;)
Try René. He grew up in France. His father was French and René grew up in France.
@@Carly8Corday If Wikipedia has it right, he was born in New York City, while his father was Swiss-born. His paternal grandpa had the exact same first and last name. He did grow up in France for a time after the end of World War II, before moving back to the US. It was during his brief stay in Paris that the acting bug had bit him. He also lived in London, England, where he attended what is now the Carnegie Mellon University, graduating there in 1962.
I LOVE the mechanic's expressive, grumpy face. Such a funny part.
Why did they never think to have another voice on the other line of the phone? LOL. I always loved that little girl and the dog!
Has Kate Mulgrew just always been 42 years old, in every decade?
There is one stereotype of a woman that occurs here. She waits until it is late & then baits the murderer, knowing she & the child are unprotected. She then demands to be helped by the sergeant when he is off duty. She keeps calling for the sergeant when she could simply call the police. She is the wife of a police lieutenant & should get immediate help. She keeps putting herself into situations where she needs help because she does not think through the consequences of her actions. The men around her continue to disappoint her.
She backed the Pinto over the trash cans with the bumper and it didn’t even explode😂🤣😂

Yes indeed Kate Mulgrew is excellent as Mrs Columbo ! Top quality actress!!!!!
I remember watching this show as a 12 year old when it first aired. It wasn't bad but even then nobody could buy this woman as Columbo's wife. It would've worked much better as a totally separate show with no Columbo connections. That actually hurt it. Kate was wayyy too young for the part although she does look older than the 24 she was then. She actually looks almost exactly the same as she did 15 years later on Voyager.
Kate Mulgrew is excellent ad Mrs Columbo.
In real life don't forget that Peter Falk had a wife that is 20 years younger than he is !
@@seosamhofionnaghain6274 Peter Falk was a multi-millionaire movie star celebrity. Lt Columbo, on the other hand, was a rumpled, middle-aged policeman. When he spoke for years about his unseen wife, nobody imagined he was talking about a glamorous, sophisticated, patrician child-bride. Mulgrew was nearly thirty years younger than him. More to the point, she was 12 years old when Falk started playing Columbo and talking about his wife.
There can be multiple actresses playing Mrs Columbo.
Kate Mulgrew fitted the bill in Mrs Columbo 1979.
Remember James Bond in 1962 is Sean Connery
James Bond of 2019 is Daniel Craig.
Its called floating timelines.
Hardy Boys in Book 1 are 18 and 17 years old, But in Book 50 THEY ARE STILL 18 AND 17 YEARS OLD.
Its called floating timelines.
When fiction comes into play real life goes out the window the writers can write what they like in the play.
@@seosamhofionnaghain6274 Mulgrew was still too young in 1979, not to mention miscast in a number of other ways, to play the wife Columbo was talking about in 1968, even taking into account your proposed “floating timeline”. Even the makers of the show itself eventually acknowledged this, when they retconned the show later in the season so that “Kate Calahan”’s now-ex-husband was in fact an entirely different police officer called Phil (as opposed to Frank) Columbo.
In a work of fiction the writer's are not hampered by real life timelines whether on TV movies or Books.
If James Bond was 30 in 1962 Dr.No movie Then in the last Bond Movie the Character of Bond should be 90 by now but actor Daniel Craig is only 53 in the 2021 No Time to Die Current Bond movie. Bond is in a floating time line like Mrs Columbo.
Writers of TV , Books and Movie scripts regularly indulge in this floating timelines.
Other examples are The 3 Investigators Jupe Pete and Bob solving 43 Mysteries while remaining 14 years old all thru the books 1 to 43.
Floating timelines mean they do not age significantly.

Ok, this was pretty darn good. Except for some of the domestic housewife stuff that just seemed to lengthen it, this was scary and suspenseful in parts.

In Columbo, he said that they had no children. I've only seen the Mrs. C ones that came with the Columbo DVD's. Thank you so much for posting these.
He comes off as pretty selfish, among other very unpleasant features and traits. He sometimes made it sound as if he and Mrs. Columbo were raising their nephew (hers once, then several times his), and that one ep. where the nephew got married and it was explained that his parents had died a good while back. You can't rely on the backstories we're given. In one, he was a good cook because Mrs. Columbo had many interests and cooking was not one of them. In another, he couldn't even break an egg without widespread destruction resulting.
If I were this homicide detective, and I had children, I think I would refrain from ever mentioning them while on a case, to anybody, period.
