This was (in my humble opinion of course) the best scene from Puss In Boots: The Last Wish, but why? That's exactly what we’re going over today, as I breakdown why the first encounter with the Wolf, might just be a perfect scene.

So if you haven’t watched the movie yet (for some reason) and you want to not get spoiled, then comeback and watch this video after you have watched the movie. The blood scene caught me off guard at first, which was a huge factor in telling me that this movie was not fooling around. With how kid friendly a lot of movies were, I initially brushed it off as maybe wine that fell or dropped onto Puss when he dodged the scythe. But when he wiped his hands on his forehead and saw the blood, and no quirkily jokes were made, I realised just how serious it was for Puss. I love this movie man.

I was actually shocked at how adult this kids movie felt. the blood, the fear, that whistle tune, all things that I can imagine being terrified of as a kid. like if I saw this movie when I was little, I would have had nightmares. like even I was a little scared when I heard that tune. not to mention the swear bleeps, where before DreamWork's would slyly avoid saying the actual curse, like in the puppet show when Shrek and donkey first walk in to lord farquad's kingdom, or in the Madagascar movies in the scene where Marty the zebra uses an acronym that spells out "shit", here they don't mess around with avoiding it, they straight up signal that this is supposed to be a swear. like that's the whole point of those randomly censored movies videos on UA-cam, when we hear bleep, we hear a swear. they also say crap at least twice which surprised me even more. and the mature themes of mortality and coming to terms with death, but living your best life and not wasting it, and with goldilocks being an orphan who rejects her adoptive parents, which happens a lot more than you'd like to think, but them still loving her and helping her get what she wants, and perrito getting almost murdered by his family out of clear malice, but still being trusting and loyal, all the themes in this movie didn't mess around. they hit hard and they didn't cheap out on cliches.

I would argue that the Wolf is a villain still, albeit a noble one. Keep in mind, Death wasn't doing all this to teach Puss a lesson - he legit wanted to kill him. He even complained to himself about why he had to play with his food after the final fight, definitely hinting that his torment of Puss was for his own amusement and thrill.
But what makes him noble is that, despite that, he still takes his job and what he represents seriously. When Puss displayed a true change of character and respect for life and death... Death couldn't justify killing him any more. But it doesn't change the fact that Death really REALLY wanted to kill the Stabby Tabby. That I think still allows him to be classified as a villain and not just an antagonist

They did a really damn good job keeping it just vague and ambiguous enough to make the Wolf's reveal as Death a legitimate twist. Sure, it seems obvious, but be honest how many of us thought he was going to be the LITERAL Grim Reaper and not just some badass bounty hunter that Puss associated with death? I honestly thought that, yeah, the Wolf himself is gonna be a bounty hunter, but that most of Puss' interactions with him (the carriage chase, the big fight with the Bakers Dozen) were merely Puss hallucinating and having associated the Wolf with Death in his mind.
So when the Wolf showed up in the Cave of Lost Souls and revealed that he was, in fact, Death straight up... that was a very effective twist I think. And a good twist always should make you go and say "Damn, how did I not SEE that?! It's so obvious in retrospect"
Compare this to bad twist villains (COUGH Hans from Frozen COUGH), where it doesn't matter how many times you rewatch, there is simply no way to have predicted the twist based on given evidence because the only way they could make the twist work was to literally have it come out of nowhere. Yeah its got its Trolls and Boss baby and what not, but once you move past those you get the enduring classics like Shrek, How To Train Your Dragon, and Kung Fu Panda, which are arguably some of the most iconic animated franchises of all time(and some of the best too).
They just have a talent and drive to them that you don't usually see anywhere outside of Disney, and even then disney has been seriously lacking in recent years. Their movies manage to touch that animation magic you don't find outside of classic disney or pixar. I think the shot of puss bleeding works really well on a meta level, too! like, let's face it, we all went into this movie with the preconceived notion that it was a kid's movie, and kid's movies almost never show blood or kill the main character. we all went in with more or less the same mindset that puss was invincible, just for a different reason. when we, the audience, saw puss bleeding, it signaled to us that this movie _could_ do that. and if that barrier was broken, we recognize that it could break others, that puss _can_ die. we have the exact same realization of his mortality at the exact same time as he does, and it's really cool.

I also started to believe there is a lot of thought under this character concept.
First, the historic iconography. The coins in the eyes is greek, holding a sickle at each side of his face makes me think of egypt death gods. Wonder if there is more.
Also, it is worth noting that Wagner Moura is brazillian and speaks portuguese, while Antonio Banderas is spanish. If you dont know either language you would be forgiven for thinking their accent is the same on isolation, but when they are together, it creates this effect where wolf's accent is relatable enough, but also different. Having this contrast against the protagonist creates this "I feel almost confortable here, but its something else" which I loved.

AND THEN!!!!....You manage to temporarily escape the thought and retreat into a safe area. But its always there. At moments you feel safe. At moments you feel in danger. It is always able to find you.
And as you struggle to build relationships and learn who you are it can always bust in and remind you you're still just this small weak temporary thing in the world.
But eventually you stop running. You confront the fear. And though you may not win in the end you have a reason to fight. A reason the value your life. And so you live. And death exists no longer as an enemy but simply as a reality. A battle you are destined to lose but one which is always worth fighting. Not to mock or laugh at. But to respect and accept. It no longer will chase you. But it will be there when your time is up.

I actually watched the blood scene before watching the movie thanks to UA-cam recommending me spoilers. But I actually expected it to be around the end of the movie ngl. Most of the time the character doesn't have a direct serious fight with the antagonist but this really caught me off guard. I even got scared and had that effect I can't describe (when you hear your heartbeat and stuff).

I like how Puss was in utter shock as he turns around to see a large mysterious figure sitting right next to him at the bar. I was expecting a comedic surprise reaction from Puss but instead the scene carried on the serious tone the whistling set up seconds earlier.

My favourite part of the wolf I think is his voice. Idk why but I cant really describe it as well as I want. It doesn’t sound like a traditional deep or scary voice. It’s just got a perfect accent, it sounds almost unstable but you can tell from the things he says that he’s not uncontrolled.

The cinematography in this film is miles beyond most. Each scene connects to the each scene with a sinew, sometimes you don't see it until it's plucked and hums... or whistles.
I love the Western made modern, and The Last Wish was perfect as was Lobos.

When lightning flashed as death struck the floor with his sickles and it made his eyes glow gave me chills. Also death was alwys going easy on puss, because all things eventually die. He appeared as a wolf to insert more fear into puss as he was wanting him to value his life. Overall my favourite dream works villain to date.

To this day im still in utter shock at how genuinely terrifying this scene was, it gave me GOOSEBUMPS, i felt VULNERABLE, it was so genuinely frightening and i fucking love it for that.
Also the part when blood dripped down Puss's face caught me so off guard, it was like the first time in awhile since i had watched a kid animated movie that showed real blood, and that fact really heightened the fear/horror aspect of the scene. (and the parelell to the line "who's never been touched by a blade" was PERFECT, like when it happened i immediately realized the connection, and in the same moment i think Puss also remembered that line, and realized *oh*)

My little sister had seen the movie before me, but when I came to visit, she insisted on me watching it with her. She was talking about how the wolf was the most terrifying villain yet, and me being me, I figured out he was death in like 0.5 seconds.
I don’t think a kid’s movie has ever scared me that much. But I think death is an absolutely PERFECT villain, and is absolutely terrifying. The symbolism was fantastic. That whistle was like a click in your mind, realizing that the end of your life could be approaching you.
    It was the line
“Nobody has ever escaped me.” When I looked at my sister and said.
    “Oh. He’s LITERALLY death!”
This movie was amazing. Simple as that.

This reminds me of a scene from One Piece.
At a very early stage, Oda (the creator of One Piece) introduced what is basically a completely opposite version of the Protag.
They were in a bar eating the same food but,
"This pie is so good I can die."
"This pie is so bad I can die."
This was their first line to each other.
It seems introducing villains in a bar, somehow makes them more memorable.

One of my favorite things about this film was that death was chasing him but not like goldie and the bears or big jack, death is just there anytime Puss starts to feel the old joy of being a legend hes there, when he gives out gold to the poor, death is there when he starts to feel like himself in the cave death is there, when hes in a battle with his friends about to win, hes there, and finally when hes about to make his wish to get his lives back, hes right there, and I love that he never outright chases boots but like death hes right there right behind puss tearing his cape, taking his sword, scraping his boots, and making him bleed, it really is a terrifying detail that no matter where you are, death is there waiting

I hope new Gen and people with personal problems learned something from this movie, It perfectly describes how Precious Life is if taken at a different angle. Nowadays, many kids and teenagers take their lives for granted because of depression or are somewhat egoistic. The Death character is so on point when it comes to slacking some senses. By far, the Best Family Movie I've ever seen
Huge Thumbs 👍👍👍 for Writers, actors, actress and Animators at Dreamworks. Once again made a breakthrough to history

Can't agree with you more honestly. The execution of the scene, of Death's presence in general was just amazing. The tune he whistled always gave me goosebumps, and I just loved the way he wouldn't even always appear as a direct threat, just a reminder that "death is approaching" so to say.
It does a perfect job of causing Puss to change from the careless character he had been before, something even Death comes to respect later on. While the rest of the threats in the movie were all comical, easily defined villains being bad and deserving to be stopped - that wasn't the case with Death. He was a natural force of their world. Puss had provoked him in basically every way he could. Death wasn't something that could be stopped, and to have his sights set on Puss' end, for Puss to fear his time was limited, was what caused him to grow.
I'll bet the tune will get used a lot now for humor online, but I'm glad I saw it in the movie soon enough as I did, that I got to truly experience even just a small fraction of what emotion I think Puss did hearing it. I have to wonder what the tune is from though...
I'm definitely hoping we'll see Death again though. Maybe in another Shrek movie, maybe he'll show up and even as a more protagonistic character to claim the life of a worse villain that could have been like cheating death or such to get away with nefarious things. He's just a really amazing character, as fright instilling as he was awe instilling.
