Don't forget that there's a huge stigma against people who have been in prison, not only in the US
It's often very difficult, if not impossible, for them to get an education and/or job.
And if you have pretty much no chance on the outside, why would you care about robbing/stealing/dealing drugs etc again. Worst case scenario, you go back in to what you're used to for the past few years.

Hey Larry! I've been watching your videos a good bit recently and I really, really respect what you do. It takes a strong man to not only learn from his mistakes, but use his mistakes as a teaching tool for others, especially young people who ate at a high risk of ending up in prison. A buddy of mine got out of a max security not too long ago, basically his ex cheated on him with another dude in his own bed,, he got pissed off (rightfully so) and he took back the PlayStation and such that he gave her and she had him charged with grand theft because the value was over $400. He got nine months for that charge, but unfortunately because he was a younger guy who had a bit of a past? He ended up in a maximum security prison, don't know which one, but I know it was here in NC. I can't say I condone his actions, and that he should have been held accountable, but I understand on a human level why he did it, if it were my girlfriend? I'd be pissed off too and probably do something stupid, just maybe not to that degree. But one of the stories he told me was definitely something you'd hear about in a max security. He told me he was sitting in the mess hall having lunch, and this young guy who was cocky and trying to act all tough took someone else's seat...well, the seat he took was that of an older guy in his 50s with multiple life sentences. Guess it wasn't the first time this kid tried to pull this because he clearly had enough of this young punk disrespecting him. He walked up to him while he was in his seat, and suddenly produced a creepy grin on his face. He left the mess hall for a second, came back with a shank made from a glass shard, and within five seconds slit this guy's throat from ear to ear and got the hell out of there. The guards started calling "lockdown, lockdown! Everyone back to your cells now!", beat his ass, and threw him in the hole for three days. At first I'm like "are you serious? That's all they did to him?" but then it hit me. This was an older guy with multiple life sentences who had a reputation of being a convict, but a convict who took no shit from punks like that. What's the worst they could do to him? Give him another life sentence? He's never getting out unless he's in a body bag. Don't screw with lifers because they have nothing to lose when someone disrespects them or pisses them off.
Anyways, I'd like to request a specific historical prison event if you think you have the time to cover it, it's one that really really pushed prison reform into the spotlight. The 1980 New Mexico State Penitentiary Riots, I read some of the stories and they're truly horrific and disturbing (like rats/snitches and pedos being slowly tortured and burned alive with acetylene blow torches...), but I would love to hear your thoughts on this event, how it came to be, and what happens when the conditions in prison are so bad they're intolerable and convicts have had enough, and I think 1980 New Mexico shows what can happen and how bad it can get when the system is abusive if not sadistic. I also wanted to ask if you ever met anyone who was there when shit was hitting the fan, or perhaps even involved in those riots. Thank you for all the good work you do! Need to join the action crew one of these days.

@@wynndoesthings8662 The answer to your question is no. Most COs receive training during the academy on 12 gauge shotguns and 5.56 AR rifles, but this is in case of special circumstances or posting in a tower, which is very hard to get. Almost universally, COs carry a 4oz can of OC spray, a radio, a pair of handcuffs without a key except for certain officers, latex gloves and a CPR mask. Some will go the extra mile and carry a small flashlight that is required to be under six inches and 1.5 ounces in weight. Depending on the housing unit you work, you might carry extra handcuffs, shackles and a pair of medical shears to cut down bodies. If you are qualified for an outcount, where you are escorting an offender outside of the prison grounds, you are issued a pistol and potentially a shotgun for the duration.

My kids are 39 year old son and 38 year old daughter. So going back to 1992ish I know the Police sergeant for jailing in Lancaster, California. I used the scared straight method and took my kids through the jail on a Friday night, even put them in a cell with the door closed. Needless to say that scared the daylight lights out of them, and my kids never got into major trouble. I think more young kids need to see that to keep them out of prison and jail. Your thoughts?

    Great video!
You mentioned you stopped eating meat due to the bone-in situation.
I was curious, can you have dietary restrictions in prison?
From allergies such as ciliac(spelling?), to intolerances like lactose intolerance, to belief based such as vegetarian, vegan and kosher. What type of control (if any) does one have over their own diet in prison?

    In jail we got:
    4:30 AM mandatory breakfast:
    1 milk
    1 sugar cereal
    1fruit
    2 bread slices
    2 hard boiled eggs
-Most of the time they would not give you fruit because people would make alcohol.
    11:00 PM lunch:
    2 bread
    meat product bologna
    fruit
    5:00 PM dinner:
Varied every day, but barely varied.
TBH as someone who suffered from eating disorders my entire life, I ain't gonna lie.
I may be the only human who LOVEDDDDDD jail dinners.

At Rikers I was in the hole for a week and they gave me a moldy cheese sandwich and a handful of crushed Doritos and sour milk every day. It wasn't much better back in general pop but the thing I missed the most was a nice cup of coffee in the morning. I wake up each morning at 5:30 am and sit outside with my coffee and listen to the birds chirp. That is a daily reminder why i won't ever go back to prison.

I understand this sounds like a silly question yet if I don't ask I can't learn. My question is how can people help make changes to the prison systems? I am new to your channel and I don't know if you have already done a video on this topic yet I feel it's very important. I have a childhood friend that is in prison and has been in and out nearly his entire life. I write to him and try my best to educate myself. Thank you for your videos. It's really amazing to see how you have turned your life around and discovered ways to help so many people.

You are so right I spent 3 and a half years in a private prison here in Scotland and the place was a joke maximum security with screws that had no clue how to handle the place so everyone spends their time living on high alert violence is a way of life in there and the food was unedible most of the time. The food situation was making people so angry the place was volatile 24/7 .
