saya pernah menetap di Telok Mas dulu dan bersekolah rendah di BHES, beberapa tahun lalu saya membawa keluarga dan tinggal di sebuah hotel di Jonkers Street. Berhampiran Muzium Baba Nyonya. Mungkin namanya Heritage Hotel. A beautifully crafted design with intricate woodwork........tiba-tiba ada seorang uncle berketurunan baba menyanyi dondang sayang sambil mencuci lantai ditengah-tengah hotel kawasan tak berbumbung yang ada seekor katak batu yang besar. Saya terpegun........it was all of a sudden and very spontaneous....
now as I'm getting old, I trully appreciate this budaya, This berbalas pantun dondang sayang style is just brilliant, the choice of Malay words, the hidden meaning behind it...I'm speechless. Generasi sekarang ada yang boleh berdondang sayang walau pun tak ramai, tetapi pantun mereka rata ratanya datar dan hambar..kalau dibandingkan dengan generasi lama seperti the late Baba William Tan...alangkan indah bintang terebit, bagaikan songket kuntum bertabur....a piece of jewel...
Wonderful Dondang Sayang narrows the generation gap bringing the young and old together. It carries the foot tapping beats synchronising with the Malay gendang in rhythm. Berirama(rhythmic) Dondang Sayang!
Yeah must retain the Melayu Baba. It is so unique and becomes an identity for the Peranakan. Don't say the Peranakan, orang melayu sendiri sudah hilang jati diri, dan ramai sekarang berbahasa Inggeris lebih dari berbahasa Melayu. Takpa lah, lu orang Baba mesti mau jaga lu punya Bahasa. Jadi, kita sama-sama boleh hidup dengan harmoni. :-) Love you all!
I really enjoy the peranakan culture, where it is literally a fusion of both Chinese and Malay influences. It is nice to know that this is something unique in the Southeast Asian region. Frankly, I really love the Peranakan food. I have succeeded in making the Nyonya Kuih Genggang and it super sedap. Hopefully, the younger Peranakan generation will continue to preserve the culture, especially the food. Not easy to find someone who can make the Nyonya apam balik.
i agree with you! Even i am the younger generation in my peranakan family but my cousin had dyed off the language because now the days government encouraged us to speak mandarin instead of malay/baba malay but no matter i will not let it extinct off in my family and i am taking over in my family and my grandparents so happy about it(my paternal side are khek baba while all my uncle from there married the pure chinese so the next generation extinct off already but i will carry on.)

keep this Baba & Malay culture alive!
most peranakans cant speak Malay or not so good anymore so they cant sing Dondang Sayang spontaneously.
i like this lively malay culture.
Mungkin kt Singapura aja kot.
Kalau kt Malaysia ni...Cina Baba Nyonya la yg fasih berbahasa Melayu berbanding cina lain.
Penang Babas on the other hand speak a language based on Hokkien, spiced with Malay words
