Thanks for this. Being a sports mad kid back in the late 60’s early 70’s I still miss the cold, wet Saturdays back home in England, in front of the fire watching the 4+ hours of Grandstand. Not being a horse racing fan, it was always great when it snowed and racing was canceled allowing the show to put on some ‘bonus’ sporting clip.

Manchester City 0 Blackpool 3 , May 4th, 1963! Also, when I was a kid, that teleprinter was one of the most exciting ways of getting final footy scores. We didn't get many latest scores in those days, so we often had to wait (with bated breath) for the away team's goal tally to be printed to know the final score.

Thoroughly enjoyed your compilation. I thank you most particularly for one highly evocative and emotional clip, the earliest intro and Theme Tune I can remember. Boyhood memories of sitting in front of our 405 line television, around Saturday lunchtime, came flooding back. Personally, that has re iconic Title Sequence

@@bdavebaldwin How's that for a coincidence, we're both the same age. I always thought there were additional shots of the OB van with the camera rotating so the four lensed turret filled the TV screen. They reprised the basic format when they changed cameras to those with a zoom lens capability. Maybe I'm showing my age, but I consider this music as the most stirring Grandstand theme.

Was never into sport, but in those pre-internet days there wasn't much for kids to do on a cold winter Saturday afternoon, so I watched a lot of Grandstand. I remember they used the teleprinter into the 1980s, just seems so archaic now, pointing a camera at a teleprinter.

Such an increbible collection. But I must say...I don't know whether the comments underneath are even more incredible. Some people remember amazing things from those days. These weren't my times, but I am not indifferent to people's emotional drives, whatever the country or the historical time.
The BBC did (and still does) great things, but it did it for and thanks to people who cared and were passionate about what they listened to and watched.

1/ sport of royalty and all that. 2/ in the 1950s the BBC ensured that itv was dealt out of sport by signing up long term deals. World of Sport started 20 years after itv did. You could probably say the concentration in the pools wasn’t exactly a BBC thing. If you watch the Nationwide titles sequences there is a brave bloke on the top of a car with a camera going a lot faster than the run of the mill cart horse.

    Terrific stuff as ever, David.
    Thoughts:
What kind of starting price is 100-7?
The 'ACTION - SCORES - RESULTS - REPORTS' line which scrolled across the early '80s titles was reminiscent of Election Night titles from the same period.
Intrigued by what the two matches were which Frank Bough reckoned "could have a profound effect on the outcome of the Football League Championship".
Rather unfortunate for the four snooker players that the bleached out, boxed photos made them look like a criminal gang being shown on the news.
Good to see at 6:27 the 'Sport For All' Sports Council banner which was such a ubiquitous presence at British sporting venues during the '80s.
Bit snide of Des Lynam to make a veiled reference to the demise of World Of Sport?

The 1975 opening titles was a updated version of the 1958 opening but with the original camera replaced by a colour camera this sequence contained clips of the 1975 Rugby League Challenge Cup Final between Widnes and Warrington. This may have been used until 1978 or 1979. The ACTION- SCORES-RESULTS-REPORTS scrolled titles were from 1979/1980 the first bit was filmed at Ascot Racecourse this also contained the clip of Malcolm Wilson upending the MKII Ford Escort (which also appeared on the Motor Mayhem video). The first animated Grandstand titles were introduced in May 1981 with the spinning wheel titles on the black background this might have coincided with the introduction of Sunday Grandstand which are not on this video but is on YT a second version that may also be on YT is the 1984 Grand National Grandstand version with the first use of the Champions theme by Carl Davis with the past winners and a clip of the film's opening before switching to the Grandstand titles, the pitch titles were introduced in April/May 1984 (I wrongly thought this came after the LA Olympics) then in 1986 came the Grandstand racetrack grandstand opening this lasted even with the 1988 introduction of the BBC Sport ident and in late 1992 (Just after the Barcelona Olympics) the globe based titles were introduced. This lasted until 1996 when a new cgi version of the BBC Sport globe ident was introduced in time for the European Football Championship hosted by England. There was also a gold version which was used only for the Atlanta Olympics

I am not much of a better, but were the 100/ odds based on the number of half crowns (2/6d) in the pound? Eight half crowns to a pound. Still, £4/ 11 and eightpence would have have been a right result for a working man back then., Proper Grandstand music then, not the modern jazzy stuff brought in later. Saturday afternoons were magic, choose Grandstand or World of Sport or switch between the two,(get up and change the channel, no remote controls then).
