I’ve been through Dothan Cut several times. Cardinal rule is Always at slack tide as with most of the cuts in the Bahamas. This clip is an example of what not to do.
There are many ways to perform this operation: more power in the main motor would have given you better control at the helm to make small corrections: more power in the stabilizer path and with little rudder movement, the current would keep you going through that narrow., but the important thing is that you, the others and the boat, crossed that strait safe and sound ... congratulations
First, thank you for sharing. Second, love Nordhavn's, many unique touches, the only knocks would be fiberglass hulls and single main engines. Third, when I think Nordhavn I think yacht tech in N Palm Beach, is very knowledgeable.
have sailed a lot of ships , never used the bow thruster at sea. this is a nearly full ahead to keep the ship in line and get more steering on rudder i have never sailed a nordhavn but i hope it have the power for this kind of water , in the danish waters we sail all the time in wawes that will push you boat if you do not have power.
Yikes, following seas are scary, I'm always weary heading back into inlet and our 30 footer has the speed to surf them, can't even imagine what its like not having the speed to keep your bow pointed where you want to go!
I'm assume the boat is in a tidal race, swanage race in UK did the same to our 32ft cruiser. Not even the mighty Nordhavn's are free from the power of the sea. All of a sudden it starts then its all over, just the bit in the middle that's scary.
My God, i never saw nothing like this. You did a great job navigating through that narrow! its not easy slipping and sliding in the water. Trust me, I know and so does my son!!!
Wonder if this is where a canoe stern or all the KK hype about the 'wineglass' form would prevail? I mean when you look at the original N62 vs the later ones with the 'bustle' or whatever they call it. the squared extension sure looks strange out of the water and appears detrimental to following sea tracking in my opinion... 3 days down sea from Tatoosh to SFO in a 48 foot yacht in November was a real learning experience for me. At least you got through despite the fin overheat.. bet the galley was a mess... Edit- after viewing your underwater video of the stern of this boat it's pretty clear she would prefer a head sea!
I'm sorry, but reading the comments below range from thumbs up to being a danger to everyone... Not very nice. Thrusters become greatly ineffective at any speed over about 4 knots. Simple math vectors. Most of the comments are correct. In a following sea, you want maximum flow past rudder to ensure control. Therefore speed her up next time and don't waste your efforts with the thruster. Focus on the ships head and try not to over correct. Good learning curve.
Takes a bit of time we grew up with a lot of current and after a bit u just know he should have started this entrance left a bit and the current take him naturally
I watched a kadey video on how the back of the boat should be shaped like a wine glass, so the waves coming up from behind don't throw the boat off course, is that what is going on here? (or is there a lot more going on?) are the back of the nordhavn shaped like a kadey?
No need for bow thrusters never had them in years gone by...could use autopilot it will correct a lot quicker than a human, or could use the stick instead of the wheel(it moves the rudder quicker than the wheel)
Although these are gorgeous super well-built ocean capable boats very few of them have enough power, when you have a following sea pushing you you need horsepower or it's going to twist the boat in the direction it wants it to go .
He's overcorrecting with not enough power. I've been in much worse than that with a 19 foot boat. I would make him look foolish. I'm a small boat with big seas guy. I know a lot of guys like me that did the same.
He is trying to drive it like a car. Speed to high, there is not much wind going on there, allow more rudder time for turn response. Far less bow thruster is needed. It's not going to handle like a car at all. Think he is a new at the helm.
Narrow passage. Get off in either direction and you’re on the rocks. If I spent $millions on a boat, until I was through the narrows, I’d be fully focused and using all available resources, just like he was. Until YOU have been through this type of situation, you will not understand.

so confusing but cool

Is that the thrusters? Wow. Surprised they did not fry. Wow.
Awesome video and well done Captain 👏👍

Not a fan of outboards on large boats but it appears this tub could really use a tow of large ones across the transom.

So is someone making a smoothie in the background or is that the bowthruster working overtime???
This man has a haircut like mine. I told my students that this was me over Thanksgiving. They believed me.

Like driving my old Pontiac Bonneville, funny thing we called it a Boat lol
I hope he bought the bow thruster a beer after that abuse. Cripes what a show.

In aviation we have a situation known as PIO in which a pilot’s inputs contribute to rather than dampen an oscillation.

Downhill tracking is quite terrifying in that clip. Made me nervous and I am just watching a video of it!
Poweeeeeer, for more positive control. :)
Is he getting sucked back in between waves or dodging torpedoes. Slight increase in rpms would solve that.
What? Bow thrusters for a gap wide like that? What?
Good use of the thrusters there. Damn tough ride. Just don’t have enough speed in those big trawlers to run that fast tide/current.
are these boats really that hard to handle
Can you add any suggestions about how to overcome the failed stabilizers please?
Drive a car.
I'm not a boat person but it looks like he's working way too hard
I wonder how effective paravane/flopper-stopper stabilizers would have worked in this situation?
Precisely ZERO percent. Paravanes might have even proved to be detrimental here even.
No need for bow thrusters never had them in years gone by...could use autopilot it will correct a lot quicker than a human, or could use the stick instead of the wheel(it moves the rudder quicker than the wheel)
Looks awfully hard to keep her on track!
That’s correct! Thrusters were working hard ! It was so tough that our gyro stabilizers overheated and shut down!
Whats that sound throughout the video? Looks 'hairy'!
Just curious why not let the autopilot do the work. Are the stabilizer working?
Stabilizers overheated after a long day of pretty sport seas, the current and seas were far to strong for autopilot
Thank you!
Curious.... lots of roll going on, were your stabilizers on?
I'm a former 63 owner, N6302.
Very active helmsman 🤣
Tracking was horrible (way to much work) Turn on the stabilizers
What is the intermittent noise in the background? Sounds like some high-reving tool that cycles on-off?
Bow and/or stern thrusters.
Umm, bow thruster!
Not enough speed mate. You never use bow thrusters like this. Power up so you got better steerage
Although these are gorgeous super well-built ocean capable boats very few of them have enough power, when you have a following sea pushing you you need horsepower or it's going to twist the boat in the direction it wants it to go .
Single engine as usual for nordhavn!!
He is over reacting
Hi why didnt you increase your rpm/power so you would have powered through and not needed the bow thruster.
@Eric Meslow Sorry for my ignorance. What does "full displacement yacht" mean?
@@xtusvincit5230 it sits in the water and pushes through it, rather than getting up on plane and somewhat skimming along the top of the water
@@cjeam9199 Ah thanks. That makes sense now.
Bowtruster ? Haha
Hard to watch
That vessel is is killing you
What the hell is that noise?
Bow thruster
He's using the bow thruster to steer because hes going too slow
Is that bow thruster noise?
Ken Williams Both bow and stern thrusters were being used. We were being tossed around like a cork!
Good job staying “ahead of the airplane “. Tidal current looks as bad as anything here in the Pacific Northwest.
@@globe.trawlin.nordhavnnord172 Captain: You used the thrusters? Are they effective at cruising speed?
This person is máster??? No idea
A case if there ever was one for compulsory captain's training. A danger to himself and others.
Durp
@@PepeDeezNutz 30 years experience trumps your durp. #youdontknowwhatyoudontknow
TheOverproof151 He probably votes for trump
What is he doing ??? Its a boat not a mixer. Way too hectic and stressful. Relax and only do small rudder changes.
He is using the bow thruster
Fu Thaiter ......... More engine RPM would have given him better water flow over the rudder, hence better control with the rudder.
The guy needs to learn how to steer a boat.
Please sir relax with the stearing.
More thrust would solve this
He's overcorrecting with not enough power. I've been in much worse than that with a 19 foot boat. I would make him look foolish. I'm a small boat with big seas guy. I know a lot of guys like me that did the same.
Obviously doesn't know what he is doing. Puts himself the boat and everyone in danger. Lucky he made it through
Driven like a car with no power steering 🤣

You have to use you thrusters everything he did was pretty much spot. If you ever did the Merrimack river Newburyport entrances you would understand.
looks like way to much over correcting way to much
Slow down
You are in dire need of more training. Please stick to driving a Coach!
Inexperience will get you where you want
