    Sold my 45-70 while back and replaced it with at 300PRC. Just wasn't a fan of the loopy trajectory with that 45. Can only imagine what loading it with a subsonic charge would do, guess it would be ok if you are hunting over a bait or feed pile at a known / set distance.
    Thanks for the video!

      Ya, I've always seen my 45-70 lever actions as a shorter range rifle. That's fine with me, I've got other rifles for longer ranges. I know that the 45-70 can and has been used at long range. Like you though, I prefer something with a flatter trajectory for longish range shooting.

    5744 - it is a double base powder, so it is temperature sensitive. First shot was from a cold chamber, so the velocity was lower. Vihtavuori N32C looks like Trail Boss partial substitute, yet they do not endorse reduced loads with it, so some Quick Load or GRT simulations are needed. Yet it may be worth it, slow burning rifle powders like 5744 or H4895 require bigger charge weights, producing more recoil and barrel / can fouling.

    Need to look at drop across different distances. The biggest drawback of hunting subsonic in my opinion. Lobbing them out there you end up with significant drop over minimal distance changes. Maximum Point Blank Range is out the window.

    The difference is the set back of the wood setup that moved 8" to 9" during the testing, if you would have it fastened down you might have gotten more penetration. Nice testing too bad we don't have the old wet phone book tests any more! It would show total cavity including temporary cavity. Too bad they don't make phone books any more!

      Talking to Hornady while researching the bullet, they specifically intended it for medium game such as deer, wild hogs and even black bear. Hornady makes other 45-70 bullets that are intended for bigger game such as elk. The 410 gr Sub-X isn't going to bounce off bigger game, but they do make other bullets for that purpose.

    I enjoy your 45/70 reloading videos. I see that you loaded 34gr IMR4895 & only got 868 ft/sec. Just wondering why you didn't try stepping up the load a little (maybe to 36gr) to get to 1000 ft/sec ? I load 45/70 with 46gr IMR4895 & get ~1500 ft/sec, so 36gr should not cause load problems. Granted I'm using a 405gr bullet vs your 410gr.

    • @guyminer3168
      @guyminer3168 8 місяців тому +2

      In this case, to keep things simple, I just used the recommended loads. It was interesting that there was no minimum and maximum load recommended in the Hodgdon data, just a single load per powder. Thought I'd try the recommended load and see what I got. It's obviously different from Hodgdon's published velocity. I would have no problem with nudging this load up a bit as you suggest.

    This was painful to watch, trying not to say anything bad about a major brand's sponsored product. The Sub-X performed poorly as far as opening up. We saw this on the 300BO version way back when also. The shift to "it will do subs and super" expansion is just a marketing gimmick to account for it's poor sub performance.

    • @CB-di2zp

      Pine boards do not simulate animal tissue and they did state that around the 13:30 mark. It would be more telling for them to redo the bullet testing on ballistic gel as that would more closely emulate (but not duplicate) the hydraulic force that organic tissue would exert on the hollow point vs the pine boards. I would not deem this a failure for the bullet in the least. Inconclusive would be more appropriate.
      I can tell you from experience that a subsonic 45cal hollow point retrieved from an old pine stump and that same exact hollow point from the same loading retrieved from a white tail deer performed completely differently. The bullet from the white tail performing/expanding exactly as advertised and the bullet from the stump barely deforming besides a flattened nose profile.

      Indeed, im not a close range hunter (or long rang) but i prefer to have good capabilities beyond 300yrds ,that being said the last hunting trip i was on netted 12 deer among 6 people all recovered except for 1, shot with the hornady subx at 60yrds note the other 11 were all shot at 200yrds plus. I can't speak to the 45 70 performance. But I did a cva scout build this year. 450 bushmaster. Chopped to 16 and threaded. Bdx scope setup for drop adjustment when ranged. Killed 4 deer with it this year using just the hornady sub x bullets. Only recovered 1 bullet. The shot was at 180 yards and was a quartering away shot. Entered at the backish ribs stopped in the skin of the neck. Mushroomed quite nicely. Dude dropped in his tracks. So as long as you put it where it needs to go it will do the job. We forget what guns they were using 100 years ago to hunt with and the velocity they had.

      @awsomedude12345678 you have to remember that this bullet specifically isn't designed for long range at all it's more designed for max 150 and less especially if you are running it on the slower side. That being said if you use the right bullet and a marlin or Ruger you can hot rod the 45-70 and easily have a 300yd rifle without shooting a rainbow like the old black powder days

      Well then, load this 410 gr Hornady up to 1500 - 1600 fps for your 45-70 and have fun. It's intended to work well at those more normal 45-70 hunting velocities too - which is why I loaded it to that as well.

    Turn your 45-70 into a 45ACP with this simple trick! Hunting with subs is dumb.

    • @guyminer3168
      @guyminer3168 8 місяців тому +2

      Oddly, I don't think a 45 ACP is going to shove a 410 gr bullet at 1,000 fps... ;) Think handgun-hunting distances. I think this bullet is going to prove itself just fine on hogs & deer at modest range. Black bear too. And, pump it up to 1500 - 1600 fps... Then it's right up there where many guys hunt with the 45-70 anyway. You may know that I normally hunt with rifles that do above 3,000 fps, but I do understand and appreciate the big bore, heavy, slow bullet as well.

    • @MrMalicious5
      @MrMalicious5 8 місяців тому

      @@guyminer3168 Weight of the bullet doesn’t mean all that much in this use case. It would penetrate a little more, that’s about it. Permanent wound cavity will be the same. The reason you use a rifle to hunt with is velocity. ~2000fps impact velocity with a decent bullet is what produces remote wounding. Less than around 2000fps impact velocity and you get ice pick wound channels.

    Hey, I have the newer Ruger made Marlin 45-70, 19.1" barrel, with a SilencerCo Hybrid 46 suppressor and a Burris 2-7 BDC scout scope. The cool and really useful thing is that the Hornady FTX 325gr is zeroed at 100 yards and the third BDC down in the Burris reticle is also zeroed at 100 yards for the Hornady Sub-X 410gr. I have not started reloading them yet but I do have all of the components. However I recently picked up the Burris Eliminator IV laser scope and think I may experiment with it a bit on my set up to stretch out the 325 gr since we just clear cut some of our hunting property and now have longer ranges to take white tail deer in our plots.

That thing shoots sub MOA with the 325Gr hornady's... its too tempting to use them as your goto ammo but trust me after shooting 2 large black bears with it under 40 yards that bullet will grenade and you will not get the pass through you need, ESPECIALLY if you shoot front shoulder like most of the guides up here will advise you do. Stick with the heavy Remington Core-Lokt unless you are using the rifle exclusively for deer.
