Without Nukes, a Third World War by 1955 would have been inevitable. As it is no 1st World Nation has gone to war with another since 1945.
Thus: Nukes have saved more people simply by existing, than pretty much any other measurable factor.
That alone is grounds for admiration, of their achievement, and the feat of engineering they represent.
(like the Battleship in her era, stuff like this is a real test of a nation's economic, industrial and technical skill)

The U.S. President 8 seconds later after telling them about an incoming missile
Below that missile, just before it pops out of the hole, is an old man running up and kicking it several times.
_(in Russian)_ "Start! Start I say! Oh won't you? Yeeehaww!"
You can't actually see it because the rocket motor engages, but to get the missile out of the silo, an 89 VW Golf actually pushes it out.
Come oonnn, Emma!
Fun fact: The time the keys are inserted and turned to the time the missile exits the silo on its booster, is typically around a minute. It also takes nearly half an hour for missiles to reach their targets over the north pole.
For those who may question my sources on this: read The Nuclear Express, Nuclear Weapons and American Grand Strategy, How the End Begins, and Countdown to Zero Day
