Lyrics:
I laid on a dune, I looked at the sky,
When the children were babies and played on the beach.
You came up behind me, I saw you go by,
You were always so close and still within reach.
Sara, Sara,
Whatever made you want to change your mind?
Sara, Sara,
So easy to look at, so hard to define.
I can still see them playin' with their pails in the sand,
They run to the water their buckets to fill.
I can still see the shells fallin' out of their hands
As they follow each other back up the hill.
Sara, Sara,
Sweet virgin angel, sweet love of my life,
Sara, Sara,
Radiant jewel, mystical wife.
Sleepin' in the woods by a fire in the night,
Drinkin' white rum in a Portugal bar,
Them playin' leapfrog and hearin' about Snow White,
You in the marketplace in Savanna-la-Mar.
Sara, Sara,
It's all so clear, I could never forget,
Sara, Sara,
Lovin' you is the one thing I'll never regret.
I can still hear the sounds of those Methodist bells,
I'd taken the cure and had just gotten through,
Stayin' up for days in the Chelsea Hotel,
Writin' "Sad-Eyed Lady of the Lowlands" for you.
Sara, Sara,
Wherever we travel we're never apart.
Sara, oh Sara,
Beautiful lady, so dear to my heart.
How did I meet you? I don't know.
A messenger sent me in a tropical storm.
You were there in the winter, moonlight on the snow
And on Lily Pond Lane when the weather was warm.
Sara, oh Sara,
Scorpio Sphinx in a calico dress,
Sara, Sara,
You must forgive me my unworthiness.
Now the beach is deserted except for some kelp
And a piece of an old ship that lies on the shore.
You always responded when I needed your help,
You gimme a map and a key to your door.
Sara, oh Sara,
Glamorous nymph with an arrow and bow,
Sara, oh Sara,
Don't ever leave me, don't ever go.

It is impossible to say "this is my favorite Dylan song" It is your favorite until you listen to another one of his masterpieces, then that is your favorite. There will never be another Dylan.
NEVER! Let us cherish him
I totally agree, it is impossible to pick a favorite for tomorrow will bring a new one. BIRD.
Yeahh I have heard only handful. Sad eyed lady of lowlands, Make you feel my love, Rainy day woman, Blowing in the wind, Lily Rosemary and the Jack of Hearts ohh too many to count. All of his songs are masterpieces
No, it is mine!
Aint it the truth, man!!
Imagine having a song like this being written for you. It's so so beautiful.
. . . and she still divorced him!!
This song came before or after the divorce?

So glad my parents called me after this song. My sweet mom died 10 years ago and we've burried my dear dad one week ago. My heart is broken but I'm so thankfull for everything they learnt me. Love, but also the real music!
May they rest in peace, I'm sorry for your lose. I was listening to this song with my Dad, and we don't talk tho he's still alive. But those are still good memories and I'm sure you got much better ones with your parents. That's what this song is about, remembering and cherishing loving memories that stay with us although the people that created them ain't around anymore.
you are a sweet lady, you made me smile
im so sorry, hard times losing the ones who always cared.my father died 86 of aids when i was fifteen.my mom is still with me and with the years we get along even better.she introduced me this song,i love it

Take care , Sara lady ... Greeting from VietNam
My mother's name was Sara. After her death my father would listen to this song and tear up. Since his death I listen to this song and tear up.

"loving you is the one thing I'll never regret"
Hello dear, it’s nice meeting you on here
This album came out the year my daughter was born. I named my daughter Sarah because of this achingly beautiful song.
A beautiful name for a beautiful lady.
I love this song so much. If this had been Dylan's only song he would still be a legend.
Bob Dylan =LEGENDE
Good thought. But the reality is that Dylan pulled at least 10 songs as good as Sara. Then he made other 200 or so that are great too. This is called creating a handsome body of art. Genius work.
He mentioned another timeless song that made him legend long before Sara. It's Sad Eyed Lady Of The Lowlands
He IS still a legend
- blowin in the Wind
- Masters of war
- Hard Rain
- the times they are a changin
- chimes of freedom
- all I want
- it’s all over now
- like a Rolling Stone
- desolation row
- almost everything off blonde on blonde
- all along the watchtower
- tangled up in blue
- idiot wind
- isis
- hurricane
- cup of coffee
And that’s just a little piece of his early career, the nineties material is pretty good as well
These are the words we all wish we had written to the loves of our lives. Despite the ending of this union, for whatever reasons, it remains one of the most honest tributes to a person, ever.
Bob Dylan is an absolute legend, all these years later and there's still no one with his unique kind of raw talent. His success wasn't based on his looks or dance moves or the traditional idea of a "good voice" it was based on his artistic ability and his poetic way with words. All his songs are so different to everything else and somehow seem more meaningful than alot of others. His one of a kind and should never be forgotten.
Amazing lyrics.
His music will never be forgotten.
The youngsters of today will get older and their music tastes will change and some of them will find Bob.
Carry on enjoying the music x
Why has he never been declared the poet laureate of the United States? 🙏💕
Lennon and McCartney are very good but for me the only one that comes even remotely close for depth, sadness, laughter, love, feel and poetic beauty is Shane MacGowan. His catalog of songs is unparalleled by anyone in this day and age. No dancing, looking pretty or changing to suit a wider audience. A true poet that will live forever in the hearts and minds. Thanks Shane.
@@kathryntitus9647 he won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2016.
@@diannemoritz4138 I vaguely recall that, it almost seems like there should be an extra special award for someone of his stature above and beyond even that honor! 💚

Thanks for the lyrics.such a touching song and beautiful words.
Thanks for taking your time to write ✍️ the lyrics
This song is evidence of why Bob Dylan is the best song writer ever - so much said in ordinary words and the looping melody that never gets boring can be played over and over again.
From Kindergarten to Medicare, this man has jolted, inspired, surprised, convicted, entertained, delighted, challenged and even made me cry. Superlatives seem silly at this point - I just say "thank you."
perhaps the most beautiful and sad song ever recorded.
Don't forget "It makes no difference", "You're a big girl now" and "Dirge"?
never heard of "It makes no difference", but the other two you mentioned were classics, always loved them, but to me they do not top Sara, it was true and he lost her anyway, due to infidelity.
Sad? It's a tribute to wife
Yes, but note the minor key, they wailing harmonica and the pleadng for her not to go, which of course we all know she did about 1-1/2 years after this masterpiece was recorded. she couldn't stand his philandering, certainly understandable, and she took him for half of his considerable wealth. many of Dylan's songs, indeed, whole albums, are "sad." Time out of Mind for example, and many others. It is a very sad yet gorgeous song. thanks for commenting Elizabeth. Ihave a daughter with that name, only with an s instead of a z.
For his wife
Circa 1990 I was in my pajamas, sitting on an old wooden, rectangle coffee table with an old ashtray on it stuffed with butts from my mother. The night before, my parents had a pretty bad fight, glass was broken, and plates were smashed all over the floor. My father was up still with his huge speakers blaring my mother was nowhere to be found and he sat with me and we listened to this album and I've been in love since. Miss my dad and my mom, even though it wasn't the greatest those moments made it worth it.
A sign of Dylan's genius: when I listen to a song of his again after not hearing it for a while, I hear something new and feel new meanings in it.
and another thing, look at the number of words used in his lyrics, its lovely
@@miguelraeder3005 I listened to it, and to several other of your Dylan, Beatles, and Clapton covers.
First, stop doing a Dylan imitation when you sing his songs. It sounds ridiculous - it always does, whoever is doing it. Sing his lyrics with your own voice.
Second, get some kind of guitar tuner if you can't do it by ear (and trust me, you can't.)
Third, if you're not already getting together with other musicians, do so. You're a moderately good guitar player, but that's all you'll ever be if you don't interact with other musicians.
Every time. Like reconsidering a great painting.
Yes it is like reading the Bible. Well he is from the priesthood so it figurs.

Bob Dylan and his wife Sara were estranged at the time..He wrote this song for Sara. Sara was present at the studio and listened "from the other side of the glass" as Dylan recorded the song , Dylan turned to Sara just before beginning the song, and stated, "This one's for you." This is the first take and its perfect.
Bob and Sara reconciled after the recording of the song but would divorce in 1977.

Three people in the world who are completely inimatable...dylan, Van the Man, and Neil Young.I think all three are impossible to try to replicate. Their voices and timing you just cannot match. And yet they are equally beautiful singers and masters of their craft. I grew up with alll three. Thank God for that. Else I would never have known what good music was and still is as all three are still producing. All three are timeless and their songs stir my soul to it's very foundation. Plus if you were more familiar with bob’s style of writing… You would know that he doesn’t use little bridging words like that, wastefully. He is simply sustaining, as in dragging out the word mes, sen,,ger
I like when a song talks about another song. ("Writing sad eyed lady of the low lands for you") I don't know why.
I know right!
I agree. It's as though Bob's letting us into his world - "that song I wrote, that everyone loves and this is another one".
I love the way it starts with him and his kids on a beach, full of life and fun and the laughter of kids, a real family setting. And then how it ends up on the same beach but now empty and devoid of all past happy domestic scene and just replaced by an old shipwreck and kelp. Just so much imagery,.
Such an evocative song. Sad and possibly angry and perhaps a little confused - he asks "why did you change?". So so relatable.

The imagery in this song is so evocative!
Realy beautiful , the violin and harmonica waving gently on a air of melancholy. Stany.
Hello dear, it’s nice meeting you on here
I believe Bob has managed to capture the deepest explaination of the relationship of God and man in just 1 song. 1. the beauty of God, how he has chosen us and how he loves us. He knows us by name and he knows every hair on our head. 2. existence of man. living in flawed flesh , confessions , then spirit filled, weeping in the awareness of love and forgiveness, pool of tears flooding the new born seed. Its the only way we can put one foot in front of the other and continue the jouney.
Wrong song.

We named our daughter after this song 35 years ago.....Our Sara was as beautifull as in your song. I pray and say: please don't ever leave me, dodon'tever go....❤❤✨🎇🎇❤❤...
Hello dear, it’s nice meeting you on here
I don't know why these words bring tears to my eyes. It's a melancholic spring where things once lost are lost forever
One of the best songs of my life👌
The most beautiful love song I can remember. I need to find me a Sara.
Me too....get in line.😄
So sad. I first heard this 40 years ago at 19 years old. Hit me then . It still does. That's life. The longer you live , the more sadness you see, Hey-ho . It's not bad, it's just life.
Yes I thank my older brother for this one I first heard it in 1977 when I was well into punk music but this was a real amazing song that I still listen to as if I've just heard it.
Bittersweet I guess
Like the French say c'est la vie
Especially if you could relate to it
@@arnoldblashak171 it is what it is
Bob recorded this song gazing at Sara through the glass of the recording booth. What an experience - there are no words.
My first love from 40 years ago got in touch and we were talking for a while... Not in touch now. I had never heard this song but he said it reminded him of us and what could have been. It breaks my heart every time I hear it,
Damn

Yes.
I'm beyond elated that Dylan songs are now all over UA-cam. Long may it continue. For years my Playlist was constantly being decimated.

There will never be another Dylan.
That's like saying there will never be another Beethoven, Bach or Mozart. There couldn't be because these artists stood so far above everyone else.
