    Let's go back to the late 1990s when Pokemon's popularity was at its peak. I was a fan of the series since close to the beginning and it was a magical era to be a part of! This super long video dives into the nostalgia of that magical era of 1998-2001 of the Pokemon pop culture phenomenon, let's relive our childhood for the next hour and a half through commercials, video games, and toys!

    I miss those few years, 98-2001. Pokémon was LIFE back then. I was 8 in 1998 when pokemon hit the US. I don’t remember how I heard about Pokémon, but I had my mom bring me to ebgames. Grew up in Nj. I got blue version, and the rest was history. I loved everything Pokémon.

    • @AngryMonkeyGames

      Was it a case of you went to EBGames and saw Blue version, thought it looked interesting, or did you know about it somehow and recognized it? Yeah Pokémon was LIFE back then for sure!

      @@RolandKoller90 I might pick up a new pack or deck every now and then but I’m not as hardcore into the card games as other people are or as much as I’d like to be. I’m more on the casual side of card collecting. I might’ve been more into card collecting and building decks if I didn’t have a friend steal some of my good cards. I remember him stealing my Ancient Mew, Mewtwo, Moltres, and a few other good cards too.

    Such amazing Poke-memories! I grew up as a kid during the pokemania of the 90's and a lot of these tales of word-of-mouth myths and secrets as well as the toys and books totally brought me back. Such a nostalgia blast! Thank you!

      You're welcome! Oh yeah so many memories! I know there were a few of the word of mouth rumors I forgot to mention, then I remember them and want to make a sequel video of this to include some of the stuff I forgot about and continue with what it was like to be a Pokemon fan in the 2000s but I just haven't yet...but I hope to someday. But Pokemon in the 90s was such a magical experience that is so hard to describe to younger generations, it was so much a "you had to be there" type thing. Thanks for watching!

      @AngryMonkeyGames  3 місяці тому +2

      My parents didn’t dig too much into the Satanic side of Pokémon but my mom was very concerned about the violence side of things. I had to do a lot of convincing that the Pokémon don’t die, they only faint and that made he’s feel much better that these creatures weren’t fighting to the death. So after that, things really loosened on the Pokémon stuff. Now Harry Potter, that was forbidden for being Satanic.

      This video was definitely me putting EVERYTHING into it. I remember I took notes of everything I wanted to make sure I covered, and then typed up my script, then from my script put in bold every picture or image I wanted to include, then put those bold words into a list, and separated images and video as two separate lists. Record as much as I can on my own and pull from other UA-camrs the stuff I couldn’t. I worked on it the week of July 4th and took that week off from work and used my time off to record and edit the video.
      I remember I recorded it on Monday the 4th and then Tuesday and Wednesday I probably put in 8-10 hours each day editing and still had some “fine tuning” to do Thursday before my first import.
      Basically…it took a LONG time to make but I’m so happy with how it turned out. It was hard work but so fun to do!

  • @pokefriend123
    @pokefriend123 Місяць тому +1

    I started Pokemon at the end of Gen 3, where Diamond & Pearl were just around the corner. I had memories of my Sister bringing Pokemon to me prior with a Gameboy and a whole bunch of figurines and toys from her growing up through the 90's, but I didn't know it was called Pokemon. When I was in middle school (like grade 4-ish) Pokemon cards got really popular and I managed to collect a bunch. Without ever knowing about RSE I learned most if not all of the Pokedex up to that point just by collecting the cards! I eventually got Pokemon Diamond as my first ever game in 2006 but I was so hooked on it I never played another game ever again. I destroyed the boundaries of that game with an Action Replay and just when on a rampage across the region. No memory will ever hold up to that for me!

    • @AngryMonkeyGames
      @AngryMonkeyGames  Місяць тому

      I had so much fun with an Action Replay back during Diamond and Pearl! I still have it. Run through walls so that way I didn't have to have Cut, Rock Smash, Rock Climb, or Strength, or the guarantee encounter whatever Pokemon you want which was great for experimenting with EV training stuff. So many fun memories with the Action Replay.
      So question, being in 4th grade in the mid 2000s when my generation saw Pokemon as babyish, did your generation see it that way or was Pokemon still very popular or was it seen as a fad on its way out? Because for me, Gen 3 was very unpopular with the kids my age back when I was 11-12, seen as childish and uncool. But by the time Gen 4 came out, I was in high school and seemed to be way more popular than Gen 3 with the kids my age.

      @@AngryMonkeyGames The way I see it, Pokemon never lost its luster. But being a fan after Gen 3 I do see what you mean. Pokemania wasn't as strong after Gold & Silver, even my Sister fell out of Pokemon at the same time I got in to it. Pokemon was so overdone at that point nobody cared how childish the game was. Everyone just complained about the 8 Gym structure and the same old mechanics like every other Pokemon game. If anything, it was less about being a kid and more like "Why are you still playing those outdated unfinished games". I didn't see what they meant until 2 generations later when I realized: Pokemon just doesn't learn.

    • @AngryMonkeyGames
      @AngryMonkeyGames  Місяць тому

      @@pokefriend123 I didn't mind the 8 gym structure and all that but I know around Gen 3 is when people started complaining about Pokemon, like we already have Krabby why do we need Corphish? We already have Butterfree why do we need Beautifly? Which now I know the reason why Gen 3 had so many new Pokemon is because they planned on starting fresh (kinda like what they actually did with Gen 5) so that's why we saw some "repeats". But yeah a lot of kids grew out of Pokemon around that time.
      And that is interesting for the younger crowd to see Pokemon as outdated vs my generation thought it was childish just because they played it as a kid so it's uncool to like the stuff kids like. That's how Disney was for kids around that same era, Disney was seen as for babies and little kids. I was guilty of that one for a while.

    • @pokefriend123
      @pokefriend123 Місяць тому

      @@AngryMonkeyGames I always thought Pokemon was cool. I mean yeah the game mechanics are a little dated but they always have something for everyone in these games. I fell in love with Pokemon for the relationship, if other people didn't like Pokemon I just said they didn't know enough about them. Pokemon could use a remaster, I think the Legends series is going to fix that for most of them. As long as they keep making Pokemon, they will be someone's favourite!

    • @AngryMonkeyGames
      @AngryMonkeyGames  Місяць тому

      @@pokefriend123 I always enjoyed seeing all the new unique creatures and the adventure that a whole new region and game gives. Plus I understood it well enough that I can actually relax and play that, something I can't say for any other video game where you have to time your jumps or your attacks. You just walk around and explore a new area and that's just fun to me. And then when I got older and seeing how everyone has their own unique play styles, some brute force it, some implement weather conditions.
      But I can't remember why I liked it so much as a kid. I mean yeah, everyone liked it so you like it too so you can fit in with the other kids but something definitely kept me there and drew me back in with every new Pokemon thing that got released. Maybe it was the relationship/community aspect of it. Everyone liked it so I was able to walk up to any kid at recess and talk Pokemon and we had that thing in common and I make a new friend, maybe that's why. All I know is there is something magical with these creatures and the phenomenon wasn't like anything I had ever seen before.

    as someon who plays gen 1 competitively, I'm curious what balancing issues you're talking about with the dragon type in this gen, because frankly Dragonite would kill to not be Dragon type in this gen. The only dragon move is dragon rage, so the fact that nothing resists it isn't worth anything, and ice is extremely good, with gen 1 blizzard being 90 accuracy and freeze being functionally a 1 hit ko (you only thaw out if you get hit by a fire move). Realistically almost every pokemon that learns it runs Blizzard, even primarily physical attackers like the #1 in OU, Tauros. None of the types dragon resists except electric are particularly common either (even Starmie rarely actually runs Surf, it has better things to be doing). So Dragonite gets basically nothing out of the Dragon type except a 4x weakness to a type you will realistically see on half of every team.

    • @bewill5121

      another note, Missingno's moves are 2 water guns and 1 sky attack, instead of vice versa. This doesn't really matter but it does kind of rub me the wrong way that you didn't bother to check when you were clearly not completely sure. The thing about Missingno giving you all the badges is also untrue. It does give you 128 of the 6th item in your bag, which is what most people use it for so I assume that's what you were thinking of.

      It was totally insane bc we had Like only 4 channels on network TV (where it aired - we still have mostly network TV culture) and everyone was deep into it and unofficial TCGs and German Language Pokémon RPGs from street merchants. those were the days. I cherish my old toys - like dozen plushies and tamagotchi Pikachu and GBC with Red and Silver (with flat battery but
      Red is in english not from Vietnam
      store)
      And first two films at the
      movies. 😊
      But we didn't had Pokémon anime from
      season 5 (may 2002?) up until DP in dec 2009 😢
      I've played all RPGs games
      and finished Like first 4 gen
      and X (XY games) - some of
      Them even in two editions!
      And only one that i didn't played yet
      is Pokémon Legends Arceus.
      Also played all Pokémon smartphone
      games except Smile and Sleep XD
      I'm back into it man!
      We also didn't had Pokémon food
      and Cosplay back in the days (but when Harry Potter overtook Pokémon they sold something HP) but nowadays it's heaven (smile). ❤

I didn't get rid of too many Pokemon toys, I got rid of a few but I have MOST of my Pokemon merch from back then.
      That's amazing how you guys seemed to be just as in to as America was! It truly was quite the phenomenon back in the day! And it's amazing how Pokemon Go kinda revived it. The 2000s was concerning to be a Pokemon fan, that was such a dark time to play Pokemon or be a fan but it got kinda revived in the late 2000s thanks to the online community and competitive battling scene (which was always there) REALLY took off thanks to the online capabilities.
      You missed out some of the best years of Pokemon anime honestly to miss out on 2002-2009. That's the entire "Advanced" era where Ash was in the Hoenn region and then DP started in 2007 and that was also some of the best years of the anime too. I kinda stopped watching around season 15 or 16 (2013 I think) not by choice it just kinda happened but I'd love to get back into it and see what Ash's adventures were like after that and see him finally become champion. I hear that was quite the battle and story arc! Also I do recommend Pokemon Legends Arceus, that is a great game, and such a fresh take on the series too.
