Cornelis Vreeswijk was born Dutch and came to Sweden at age 12.
He learnt our languaguage so well, to become one of our greatest poets and songwriter in modern time. Often much inspired by Brazilian music, as here.
He did not just learn the language, he mastered it and played with it.
It was sad that he wasn't able to stop drinking and smoking, he died too early.

Cornelis and Georg Riedel, two of our greatest musical national treasures. Both born outside Sweden. I think Georg came to Sweden when he was six years old.

The truth is that in his mother land, the Netherlands, he is well known. He made a lot of records in Dutch to, in fact same records as in Swedish and the other way around. He wasn’t dumb 😂

Norwegians love Cornelis aswell. My father told me a story of how he came to play a local pub in a small town in Norway back in the 70s

Sadly a a lot of his poetic flair gets lost in the english translation, he was such a great artist.

I would've translated it differently.
I have complained about translations for decades now (keeping an actual list of the worst examples I have seen). This translation seems pretty accurate to me. If your goal is to have the same poetic flare as the original I think you would have to forgo the accuracy and change the phrases a bit. I spent about 10 minutes thinking about how I would translate it and didn't come up with anything better.
About a decade later... I seem to recall I intentionally made this more of a "word-by-word" translation. A poetic translation would be great as well of course, but it would be something else.
Cornelis Vreeswijk is so beloved in Sweden. A troubled man in life, but an incredibly talented musician. He's composed so many epic modern Swedish folksongs! Gone too soon and dearly missed!
And the ones he translated he often enhanced by quite a lot.
I'm part of a language learning community, and every single native English speaker learning Swedish so far has agreed that _Brev från kolonien_ is a step up from _Hello Muddah, Hello Faddah_

On a vacation to Sweden we started at Stockholm in the harbor. Right there was a bust of Cornelis Vreeswijk and there also was a museum about him in Stockholm, but I believe that the museum doesn’t exist anymore. Our guide told us that Cornelis Vreeswijk was a revelation to Swedish people by his lyrics about living in the here and now, and to not worry about money and possessions, because you couldn’t take anything with you once you died.

There were many similar skalds, troubadours, authors, and play writers in Sweden,
one more cynical than the other... But Cornelis was the jazziest! Still is probably.

@@Lilygirl283 @liepsan He moved to Sweden when he was young, lived here all his life (I think) and became one of our most beloved songwriters. Even todays kids knows him. But he actually never got a swedish citizenship. It's said that he once tried, but when talking to the immigration office, they told him he would have to take a swedish test. He answered "Do you know who I am? You have been singing my songs for many years and you doubt I speak swedish?". So he just left. :) Great story. And very much Cornelis. He was a great artist...
@@liepsanYes, he was born dutch and retained his Dutch passport his whole life. He released a few records in Dutch. Try searching here for "Veronica" in Dutch.

Cornelis is my childhood. Not only was he a songwriter, he was a poet, a philosopher and also an actor. Hes son Jack traveled his father's footstep, unfortunately he passed away last year but also was a well beloved artist. I am kind of in chock you found Cornelis, but i really hope you appreciate this great man, hes memory will live on for decades. He also was a well known interpreter of Carl Michael Bellman, a 18th century poet, singer songwriter. Look him up! :) Thank you for sharing! To compare, i guess he was Sweden's Johnny Cash. Telling the truth about the time he lived in.
And he was from the Netherlands. But all the same understood the Swedish mentality so well.

Great musician, poet, singer. Love his music and wish he could have been longer with us. He had a special way with words. Poetic, beautiful, thoughtful, political and often very, very funny as well.

Cornelis used to be on our regional radio station a lot when I was young. Mostly with his Dutch bardic songs. All about the lyrics. Kind of miss that these days in mainstream broadcasting.

I know a guy whose grandfather was a painter. He used to hang out with Cornelis, and they also fought about the same girl! My friends grandfather won that one and that is why he exists! Great artist. I often go for long walks on Södermalm and sometimes walk through the park named after Cornelis.

I’m glad you found the music treasure of Cornelis Vreeswijk. He was a wonderful troubadour with a tragic life. My favourite song by him is Turistens Klagan (The Complaint of the Tourist).
I love Cornelis music, I grew up with it.
There was this one time though; he went overseas with a 14yo girl and they assumed she drowned bc they never found her body.. I was named after that song. He was a well known creep. Her name was Felicia.
Cornelis mastered the Swedish language. You can have different grades of how good and poetic songs are and then you have an entire new level were Cornelis resides. I'm not sure this can be appreciated in another language, but if you become good enough in Swedish you will understand.

I wish you could hear the lyrics knowing Swedish, although it's a good translation, I believe the lyrics cuts well deeper when listening to it as it was wrote.
He failed Swedish in school as an immigrant from the Netherlands and then became the biggest troubadour in Swedish modern history.

I think you missed the point, the key is the phrases 3:14 to 3:39 in to the clip. It is about living your life here and now and enjoy the small pleasures in life.

This one is a classic! For more Cornelis, try Brev Från Kolonien! That one is more lighthearted, it's a letter home from a kid on a summer camp. And if I was that kid's parent, getting that letter, I'd be worried! 🙂 It is a cover of Hello Mother Hello Father, but a much better version than the original! And kind of darker, this camp seems to be totally unhinged! No discipline at all, the lunatics rule the asylum!

This song doesn't work very well when put in an American cultural context.
God and the Devil are only used as templates by a man who only had a very private relation to religion living in social circles where religion isn't spoken about at all.
Note that the description of death is entirely forcused on reality, he knows nothing of suffering as long as he can be hidden under his loved one's hair, you know nothing in your grave.
God doesn't care about tattered shoes because the suffering in this world is up to us to deal with.
The devil laughs if someone walks tattered shoes until they stop walking because we allowed that evil to be.
It's as tongue in cheek as Joe Hill's The Preacher and the Slave.
Note how he describes the you in a hundred years as your corpse in the grave, not as a "soul".
We don't like religion in Sweden for the most part. Because we know it's BS. That's why there's a trillion different religions contradicting each other. Because it's all made up by humans.
