I was a teacher since the 60's till '90 and remember this so called "song" coming out. The Irish education system was doing a fine job teaching Irish kids how to live their lives, and to have RESPECT for thier elders till this music came out. I use the word "Music" in it's broadest terms. This song set Ireland back years with it's inflamatory lyrics. Until this song came out my students were happy to sing "There was an old woman who swallowed a fly" and "Wild Rover". And then this came out.

There is so much symbolism and metaphorical use in this song. The song delivers a message saying not to conform, do what you love, and don't try to be like everyone else. Strive to be different! But in the end every one will conform because that's the way society has shaped us.

i saw roger waters live in cork ireland 2yrs ago when they played this all the grey haired oul farts in the areana took over and sang this song i think he was supprised what a gig. i wonder will and of todays songs be around in 30 yrs time or will we still be listening to pink floyd . i sure will!!!! kenny

I had some super cool teachers in school. My Science teacher, would always come into class singing "Hey Jude" or "Penny Lane". Of course that was in like 1968. My art teacher was into psychedelic paintings and my Geography teacher was into the Egyptians, she was cool. My English teacher did a six week study on music. She told everybody to bring in some Albums or 45s and we would try to determine what the lyrics meant. Don't know what todays teachers are about, but all mine was super cool.

I work with kids, and there is not a day I wish that they get up and do this.
