What Do We Charge For A Leaf Cleanup in 2021? (OUR RATE $/HR)

  • Today Rob and I are out doing fall cleanups and trying to chip away at the schedule before the season is finally wrapped up. We have another dozen or more leaf cleanups on the books, and today we're taking you with us on 2 different clients.
We have been getting a ton of questions lately about what we charge for fall cleanups, and so in this video we share that we are at $175/hour for a 2 man team for us and the rig.
It can vary more by how many leaves we suck up / have to dump, but that is a base rate per hour besides our MINIMUM which is $199, even if it only takes us a half how to vac and go for a customer.
What are you guys charging for a 2 man team and your rig/setup this year? I always suggest a 4x multiple from your WEEKLY mowing price as a start for cleanups until you really dial in your costs and overhead and know where you should be at per hour. Hope that helps!

Bro I just had an issue with a client not wanting to pay up. Luckily I was able to get what I was asking. Some clients don’t realize the work put in and the money needed to run a business. And there are some that value your work and pay you fare and square. It’s the struggle we have to go through to run a lawn care business.

I am at $165 for a minimum, basically the first hour (solo here). After that I bill my time at $110. I am at yards for about 1.5-2 hours on average. A few I am at for 3-5 hours solo. If I have a guy helping me, I will put myself at $110 an hour and probably $75-$95/hr for him. My dump fee can be anywhere from $60-$140, it all depends who I get at the gate lol and I can get 3-4 properties in my trailer before needing to dump. Been high 50s and mid 60s here in Denver, no snow yet so I am crushing all my cleanups out in record time. I will probably wrap them all up next week with maybe a few left over the week after. Perhaps I'll be going back to some that had more leaves fall. Great video, Brian!

I just finished up a 2 day 1.5 acre job using my backpack and Cyclone Rake hooked up to my JD tractor. 7 yards of compacted leaves with grass mixed. This job with a 2 man crew would have been around 650.00. I’m a 67 year old 1 man band and I charged $600.00. The best part of this job was the fact the customer has a ravine and was able to dump the leaves down the hill. And the customer was very satisfied with the price and the results. My philosophy has always been…. You get what you pay for!

I work in the Schenectady NY suburban area. My average yards are alittle more involved than the yard in this video. I am a one man crew and can blow out and bag up most properties in an hour. In the neighborhoods I work the town does a bulk leaf clean up so all I need to do is pile at the road.
I charge $75 for the hour. My fall cleanups are done over the course of the fall leaf season so I will do a clean up usually twice, or $150. When a yard is exceptionally loaded, I will charge up to $100- $150, when very little is needed, I will charge maybe $10 above the standard mowing charge.
I know that I am way under the prices my fellow “super crew, super truck/trailer/super mowers”….but all my stuff has been paid for years ago, I have low overhead, I live in my work zone, and for 30 years I have been very fair and have given up on making a million dollars. For me, to make $75 per hour is fine, I have everything in this world I could possibly want…..Happy Thanksgiving to all!!!

Hey Brian, we are at $75 per man hour for one time calls (people who aren't weekly lawn clients) and a $10 discount off that rate if they are weekly lawn clients of ours. We also charge $10 per cubic yard of debris removed (implemented due to watching either one of yours or Kelfas's videos). Our rate will be going up next season due to the increase in cost of operation across the board (sometimes have seen monthly increases) from business insurance, employee taxes, fuel and oil, maintenance and equipment, etc. Also it's been difficult to find people who want to work, I anticipate paying $16+ per hour next season for employees ant that might be at the low end of the scale. Keep those video's coming. Philip in Montana

But with the Stihl 800c leaf clean ups are taking less time because of the leaf blower. But with your rates I feel we are close in price. You have bigger equipment and stuff and I am only 1 guy. But the customers love the final product.

I won't even put a blower on or get my mower out of the trailer for less than 250. Most are 200-325. I will say after taking over my bosses old company after he passed away this year I kept all the same prices that he had years past. Some of his clients were with him 30+yrs. Might be screwing myself on the old school lower prices but keeping them prices helped me keep 90 of his 120 accounts. Next year will definitely be different, especially with gas prices.

Hey Brian, great video. I was curious, do you have a cutoff for how late you do Spring Cleanups? I feel most people should have their yards cleaned up by the end of March, maybe mid April. We are still getting calls for cleanups. They are horrible with all the Spring rains we get. They are one times services most of the time and rarely do they call the next year. It is a real pain not only because the yard doesn't cleanup well when its a soggy mess, but also we have already taken the bagging system off the mower and put the mulch kit back on. Then we got to switch it back to bagging on a regular mowing day just to get that one cleanup. I was thinking of doing a hard stop on these services end of March. What are your thoughts?

Really depends. We give ranges. $275-$349, $425-$575, for example. Just depends on how long were there, how much we suck up & haul away/dispose of, and if we do any perennial cutbacks. Hope that helps!

I'm from metro Detroit originally, and piling the leaves up out front to be taken away by the city was common place, but it's virtually unheard of out here in Denver. Man, that would make cleanups so much easier for me if I didn't have to haul away or mulch all the leaves!

I would definitely say 4x your weekly mowing price at a minimum. I wouldn't do any type of leaf cleanup work for less than $125/hr, I don't care if it's just rake and tarps. Just my .02! Leaves are a lot of work, people vastly underestimate that.

The first yard you did that took you an hour and you charged $199. I would have done that for like $100-$125, it would took me like 2 hours thou. I don’t know if I am charging to cheap or my clients are cheap. I feel like if I charge more I would lose a lot of jobs.
