  • Paratroopers from the 503rd Parachute Infantry Regiment jump from C47s flying at altitudes of 500-600 feet to begin the recapture of the island of Corregidor on 16 February 1945 in this footage from World War 2. The paratroopers land on the golf course and parade ground near the barracks and headquarters buildings destroyed by the invading Japanese forces when they captured the island in 1942.
    This was a combined airborne and amphibious operation and footage of the landing at San Jose Beach by elements of the 34th Infantry is included at the end of the clip.
    Because of the small drop zones, the paratroopers were dropped 8 at a time in each of the three runs made by the 51 C47s taking part in this operation. The narrator states that 2500 men were dropped in this operation, but only a total of a little over 2000 men were dropped in two operations. From what I have been able to find, approximately 1000 men were dropped in this operation.
    In spite of what the narrator says, the dazed Japanese quickly rallied and fought a pitched battle with the paratroopers on "Topside" later in the day. More footage of the 503rd PIR's action on Corregidor can be found in this video that I had posted a while ago: • 503rd Paratroop Regime...
    Additionally, a good jumping off point for further information on the Battle of Corregidor can be found here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_...)
    Here is a clip from that article about the casualties suffered during this battle that lasted from 16-26 February 1945:
    "The perfectly coordinated triphibious American assault to recapture Corregidor left the 503rd PRCT with 169 dead and 531 wounded. The 34th Infantry Regiment suffered 38 killed and 153 wounded. Of the 2,065 men of both lifts by the 503rd PRCT, about 280 were killed or severely injured. Three men suffered parachute malfunctions, and two men who collided with buildings died. Eight men were killed either in the air or before they were able to get free of their chutes, a further 50 were wounded in the air or upon landing. Several men were missing in action at the drop. The total injuries (not by wounding) on the drop were 210.
    Japanese sources have estimated that there were about 6,700 Japanese on the island when the 503rd PRCT and 34th Infantry landed, of which only 50 survived. Another 19 were taken prisoner, and 20 Japanese stragglers surfaced after the war on 1 January 1946."
    Public domain footage from combat bulletin 45 produced by the US Army Signal Corps' Army Pictorial Service.

    My father made that jump and 2 other combat jumps in the Pacific. He was battle field commissioned and was sent back to US with Purple Heart and other medals. Was recalled for Korea at 42 years of age and resumed jump status as a Jump Master with over 60 jumps and 3 bronze stars on his wings. He retired in 1968 but returned to Vietnam for 2 tours with MSC. Heavily involved with getting Med equip in country.
    Retired as Lt Col and returned to Vietnam as a civilian.

      Why thank America?Its not the Americans alone that liberater Corregidor and the Philippines,it was the thousands of Filipino soldiers and guerillas who resisted Japanese rule even after McArthur left the Islands. The Filipinos and some Americans were already winning when McArthur decided to return to the Philippines.Its not the return of McArthur that started the taking of Philippines from the Japs.

    My uncle Fred J. Dailey made the jump that day on the Parade ground with HQ Company, 3rd Battalion, which was the first company to exit the C47's over the island. He was a .30 cal machinegunner. He made it through this battle and through the campaign on Negros Island but was killed 5 years later at Inchon with the 187th Airborne RCT in Korea.

    My neighbor George was in the 503rd on that drop, which oddly, was filmed (from the air) by my great uncle's unit, the 17th Recon. Small world. I have a bunch of 8x10s my uncle took that day from his B-25. Intense stuff. Other 17th recon vets told me about the horror of watching many of those paratroopers that were dropped onto the cliffs tumbling to their deaths. They cleaned that up for the newsreel.

Children of Yesterday and Crisis in the Pacific both gave the story of how Sgt Bill Hartman from Peoria, Il . one tank driver and two Paratroopers that miss the topside target . Made a paraless trips to the topside bringing ammo and medical supplies and bringing wounded back down to beach . He received a Silver Star for this action .

    It was kind of a mess, from what I've read: there was an extremely high percentage of this force that suffered injuries (or even death) from hard landings in this operation- "topside" was covered in broken chunks of concrete, re-bar and pipe, and tree stumps from the 1942 bombardment and subsequent aerial bombardments.

    500ft is pretty darn low, specially with those old chutes. It seems they had shortened the ripcord to have the chute as early as possible.
    The lowest I ever jumped was around 800ft, at Camp Raffalli, when getting my French jump wings while on exchange with 2e REP...

    500’ is crazy low. Lowest we jumped from was 600’, and that was tense enough. And we had -1bravo chutes. I can’t remember if it was the T-10 that they used, but at 500’, I don’t imagine you have time to start climbing risers.

    Amazing detail to be had in this video. Combined arms with the Air Force, Navy & Army. If any paras land out into sea, the Navy quickly scoops them up. Gotta luv USA planning and attention to detail in this capacity. These boys were lucky -- no AA to oppose the landing. The lowest airdrop ever, 2,500 paras jumping from 500-600 ft. A veteran airborne unit vs the bushido tenacity of a fearsome opponent.

    If I remember the details correctly, the 3d/34th Inf. was part of the 24th Infantry Division. The battalion commander later went to jump school and became commander of the 11th Airborne Division in Germany, but I forgot his name. The 11th Airborne was reflagged as the 24th Division while in Germany but the 24th Division retained an airborne element for a while. I was stationed with the 24th Division in Germany myself in the 1960s. Both divisions are inactive at the present.

      @@briancooper2112 I don't follow you. No cavalry or armor regiment numbered 11 served in the Pacific Theater during WWII. There was an 11th ACR activated in 1948, converted from a U.S. Constabulary unit. It served in Germany, then in 1966 in Vietnam where it was commanded by General Patton's son, George Patton IV. After Vietnam, the flag was transferred back to Germany until 1991.They were never part of either the 11th Airborne Division or the 24th Infantry Division. It appears that they were the non-divisional reconnaissance unit of XIII Corps during the war.

    The American & Philippine loss of Corregidor at the beginning of the war was so tragic and a very black time in 1942. The treatment of those who surrendered was horrible. I always thought that "Skinny" Lt. General Jonathan Wainwright was a tragic mistake, old and thin he was in no shape to become a Japanese POW. There should have been another to surrender at the end. A horrible fate for anybody but a younger and junior officer should have been promoted at the last minute. General McArthur could have asked for volunteers, I think many would have offered to be the one chosen. It cut many years off General Jonathan Wainwright, even the 4 star promotion and Medal of Honor could not buy him a better retirement.
    He was born August 23, 1883 making him 59 when he surrendered. He died at age 70 giving him 8 years of retirement but was in bad health the entire time due to the bad treatment by the Japanese. General POW's that were in the European war were treated very well and given special treatment except the war criminals. Even Field Marshall Friedrich Paulus was treated fairly well by the Russians while regular German soldiers were kept in horrible conditions.

    WTF 500 600 ft.....!!!!

    • @oldhickory2064
      @oldhickory2064 5 років тому

      That was not the actual drop...first run was 500 feet but because of the wind conditions that were deemed unsafe they dropped it to 400 feet and some ended up close to 300 feet with the geography playing a role in that...

    So the purpose of 400 or 500 feet jump is to avoid anti aircraft gun of jpn?

      Drop zone to short and not wide enough, winds would take them over the cliffs which some did.

    • @RrrecycleAu
      @RrrecycleAu 5 років тому

      No. There was a very significant headwind, which would have blown jumpers off the landing fields at any greater height.

    My friend's dad was dropped here as well. He said the some of the guys did land in the water. If they weren't rescued, the sharks got them.

      Not a single trooper I have spoken with, and that is many, were personally aware of men dropping directly in the water. Men were picked up from the water, but one landed in it.

      Ang Corregidor ay isang pulong nakalagak sa bukana ng Look ng Maynila. Dahil sa kinalalagyan nito, nagsilbi ito bilang pangunahing tanggulan para sa sa look at lungsod ng Manila. Sa panahon ng Ikalawang Digmaang Pandaigdig, dito naganap ang maraming labanan, maging ang pagbagsak nito at ng mga kapuluan ng Pilipinas na napasa sa mga Hapon. Sa kasalukuyang panahon, ito ay isang mahalagang makasaysayang pook at puntahan ng mga dayuhan. Ito ay pinangangasiwaang ngayon ng Lungsod ng Cavite na sakop rin ito. wikipedia
