I was born and raised in Wahiawa, (The north fork of) Lake Wilson is my backyard. As a kid, we'd hike up the creek all the way to the up to the koolau's. I know the lake like the back of my hand as I rode my dirt bike and walked around whenever the lake was dry. Looking for lures and other stuff. I could tell you where every sunken tree was and any other surprise on the lake bottom. Back then Smallmouth bass and Tucanary were everywhere! I joined the Air Force and started fishing the Federation and Redman. I towed my boat for tournaments from Texas to Maryland and Ohio to Florida. That time of my life was fun. I used to hear people say "A bass is a bass, they are all the same everywhere"! As you stated it is not! The mainland bass fishing is far easier. The fisheries are managed better, and the money is lucrative! When I retired from the AF we decided to move back, I live in Wahiawa still and I brought my boat (Ranger) home. But the fishing isn't the same! I haven't launched my boat in years! "Go Fo Broke" Matt!
Thank you for sharing this with me! It’s awesome to hear about another local boy who chased bass around the country! Glad to hear you back it back home to Wahiawa! That’s unreal you still have the ranger, that’s a dream to actually have a bass boat on wilson!
I've been to Lake Biwa back in the 80s - I was on this 12ft aluminum boat - I rarely saw bass boats there, then - and when it blows, it turned out to be hell. Rough! Good old days when bass fishing was still some sort of sub-culture thing in Japan (I was the only bass fisherman - and a skater - in my high school). Wearing a Fenwick trucker's hat and a chunky life vest with a bunch of patches of lure companies that don't sponsor me, throwing a Bagley's DB3 crankbaits and Magnum Pop R all day long. Never caught a giant - but life was full of dreams. I'm glad you have a memory fishing Lake Biwa. Congratulations. I look forward to seeing you fishing and winning Elite series this year!
That’s so rad Z. Totally can see how biwa could get nasty quick. Thanks for painting that for me. What a cool time to have witnessed. Yes I do, now I just gotta catch a bass there haha!
@@MattyWongFishing Thanks brother I really appreciate it. 👊🏽☺️ I gotta start working in the drone shots more this year, haha it’s just kind of annoying sometimes to setup when all you want to do is get fishing 🎣😎😂🤙🏽
I hear ya on the drone thing.. if you can sneak in 1 flight at a shoot it usually covers it but its definitely another thing to think about @@WhereWeWild
And i'm here in the US fishing 40 miles off shore with a Japanese slow pitch jig set up and a yahama out board. Water that clear you need live minnows.
@@AverageAngler512 it belongs to the ramp. People park their boats in the parking lot there and the ramp attendant will gas you up and launch you. It’s actually really efficient.
Biwa seems cool it looks really dope but theres no way im traveling to japan to fish a lake that you can only expect 1 or 2 bites a day. That seems kinda crazy
@@jetfuelg4083 ya orrrrr get this I can go to Texas orrrrr sense I live in California I can go catch giants here with much more frequency. What a strange response lmao "go sit on the couch and watch videos" meanwhile you comment on the same video 😂
@@MattyWongFishing I can understand that lol I just don't think it's for me over there, for bass fishing anyway. I would still love to go to Japan though I think anyone would be a fool if they didn't want to at least check it out.
I love hearing about new things.
Never knew bass fishing was a thing in Japan.
Super interesting video man.
Shout out from dead center in the US. 🤙
The water is soooooooo clear 😮 New lake added to the Bucket List!!!
Kenta is a beast! tearing it up on the elites and the opens, that man is a machine!
Wow! That would be a dream of mine to fish Lake Biwa and check it off that bucket list 🎉

In the spring it get really fun & there’s a ton of Great Lakes besides biwa. Trust me a trip to Japan is worth getting skunked either way haha!

I’d take a trip to Japan just to get skunked. Who cares, it’s Japan!!!!!
