The radar on Strela-10 is there just to determine range to target. It is 100% ranging radar, can not track the target and you don't have to use it if the target is at visual range. Also, Strela-10 can also use older missiles from Strela-1. Recommended ratio is 50-50; 2 Strela-10 and 2 Strela-1 missiles where older ones are used for less sophisticated targets which makes the system even more cost effective. In Soviet/Russian doctrine, you don't have to shoot down an aircraft in order to complete the mission; if the object you are defending is still standing after an airstrike or can be repaired, that's mission accomplished. Shooting down a plane is just more than welcome bonus. And knowing this thing is around (it's passive seeker so pilot doesn't get a warning after the launch) is enough to make any pilot nervous.
we never turned on the radar for practice. It's unnecessary, it's only there for the purposes of issuing a target-zone signal. Once a colleague turned it on during an exercise and aimed at a pair of L-159s, the planes did a disruption and circled for several minutes looking for the source that targeted them, meanwhile the colleague aimed them several times and simulated shooting, the planes never found him.

The West needs to review its anti-aircraft vehicles to include: - PATRIOT on a platform similar to the BUK. - Reissue the 35mm GEPARD for C-UAS and C-RAM functions (something that I think is very neglected) - The 76mm and 127mm naval guns are options that need to be evaluated.
The Gernans already use the Patriot truck mounted. Not exactly like a Buk but still much faster and easier to set up. The Skyranger 30 is already beeing procured as a Gepard replacement The oto melara 76mm is already used as anti-air and missile defense on most large ships that use it.
West needs: 1. single 35mm gun with programmable ammo and MANPADs on one plaform 2. 76mm with DART ammo in land applications 3. CAMM-ER on Buk like Chassis. 4. this new brithsh laser.
@@piotrd.4850 Greetings, the CAMM-ER is a good missile, but the idea is to have anti-aircraft/ballistic defense on a mobile platform for the first line and, if necessary, to be able to use the SM-2 and SM-6. I prefer to reissue the GEPARD with two 35mm cannons with AHEAD ammunition and SkyKnight missiles. The 76mm must be used not only with DART ammunition, but also with the entire HE, Frag, and VULCANO range (for counterbattery fire). The UK Laser has already been used in Yemen and, as far as I know, with success.
Strela is very old yet extremly effective little machine maybe best machine for war in Ukrajine cuz its cheaper than other AA systems like Tunguska or Thor and well igla cant match the power of strela its really impressive wehicle. Sometimes simplicity is better than high tech.
Muticam knockoffs are cheap and easy to source. The camo is effective verses older camo designs. When your quarter master is AliExpress or Temu your troops look like they are about to go play airsoft.
Everything was as simple as possible, it was the only material that could be bought quickly and a lot, besides of acceptable quality and order tailoring in third countries like China or Turkey.
Yeah this is one of their really well-made anti air systems the Soviets came up with I actually like this system and if this thing was modernized it would be crazy I know Ukraine uses these very successful Against bigger drones and helicopters. I remember watching One video from Ukraine where one of these systems had over 54 confirmed drone take down and one helicopter and 12 cruise missiles that is absolutely crazy numbers
@@hiteshadhikari well the video I watch of the same crew taking down three of them recon drones and 1 shahed attack drones in a complication video and one cruise missile in another clip then they talked about the total score since 2022 to 2024 . which was painted on the side of the vehicle with little emblems for each Target which is very possible considering how many drones are used by Russia everyday
Problem with Strela as primary solution in shooting down drones is that, while they are cheaper than BUK, S-300, TOR, Pantsir, it's not cost effective compare to much cheaper anti-drone solution. Which is, as you might have guess it, drones designed to shoot down drones.
Actually M it appears that the Strela is using a small radar to acquire the target before launching this IR missile therefore it isn't a stealth system because aircraft are equipped with radar warning receivers.
@@_Matsimus_ you were mentioning how WE - NATO doesn't seem to take drone threat seriously ....i stumbled across this SHORAD system vid....ua-cam.com/video/vvaL7koOU-4/v-deo.html
Never understood neither Strela-1, nor Strela-10. Why are they on separate vehicles ie BRDM-2 and MT-LB when there's ZSU-23-4 ready? It already has all the needed equipment, just put the missiles on it to have hybrid SPAA. Yeah, that's what they did with Tunguska later on, but why wasn't it done in 1968 after Strela-1 was finally ready as modernization for ZSU-23-4? And I bet soviet engineers had this idea since day 1. So what was the issue? Doctrine? Mass restrictions of Shilka's turret?
@hiteshadhikari sometimes I feel like obsession with ready river crossing capability had done more damage to soviet military then any conflict they were part of.
@@TheArklyte The answer is very simple actually - the Soviets wanted an IR-guided short-range system which would work in passive mod, unlike the Shilka which relied on radar for detection of air targets and guidance of cannons. The moment any air defense system turns on its radar, it risks being detected and targeted by the enemy.
@@TheArklyteLots of creeks, small rivers, lakes, and marshes in Europe generally, but in eastern and central Europe, and Scandinavia, especially. If you are trying to avoid major roads that make you an easy target, being amphibious helps.@TheArklyte
i love the system, but a missile for drones, better using a cannon like Italian guided shells, they took down drones over 5 km distance, without needs for expensive missiles. but like you said, better as being hit!
Insightful video on a system we don't hear of often in the Western bubble...I wonder how much each missile costs compared to say...a Patriot, just kidding.
Good video as always. Only stupid people will correlate a praise of a piece of military equipment with praise for the regime that build it. Keep up the good work.

The Gernans already use the Patriot truck mounted. Not exactly like a Buk but still much faster and easier to set up.
The Skyranger 30 is already beeing procured as a Gepard replacement
The oto melara 76mm is already used as anti-air and missile defense on most large ships that use it.
UA-cam eats ass!
Love you Matt.
13:31 Nice isekai scenario Lol I can't wait for It's anime release
Muticam knockoffs are cheap and easy to source. The camo is effective verses older camo designs. When your quarter master is AliExpress or Temu your troops look like they are about to go play airsoft.
Everything was as simple as possible, it was the only material that could be bought quickly and a lot, besides of acceptable quality and order tailoring in third countries like China or Turkey.
Don’t we have something similar- humvee with radar and 4 stinger missiles….
I dont believe a single number that comes from ukraine but yeah the system is indeed good
@@hiteshadhikari well the video I watch of the same crew taking down three of them recon drones and 1 shahed attack drones in a complication video and one cruise missile in another clip then they talked about the total score since 2022 to 2024 . which was painted on the side of the vehicle with little emblems for each Target which is very possible considering how many drones are used by Russia everyday
@@hiteshadhikari and you don't have to believe it they prove it with video confirmation so you can take it however you want
@brianv1988 i am.not saying videos of shootdowns dont exist, i am saying the unrealistic numbers presented are mostly propaganda
@@brianv1988 my comment being deleted by yt without any wrong word shows the censorship
7:28 time stamp you mentioned this. I still love your videos thou. 😁
The Soviet Union / Russia created a lot of SAM systems because they knew their fighters were not as good as Western ones, and they needed air defense
They needed mobile air defence to protect tanks attacking westward.
What mobile platform does Canada utilize that is comparable? Great content.
@@RickysHotRodGarage we USED to have ADATS. No more.
@@_Matsimus_ Thanks I just Wikied the ADATS. Thanks, and always a thumbs up from me!
Amphibious
@hiteshadhikari sometimes I feel like obsession with ready river crossing capability had done more damage to soviet military then any conflict they were part of.
@@TheArklyte amphibious need not mean to cross big rivers, cavals, flooded plains etc and snow covered rivers.
Its essential
@@TheArklyte
The answer is very simple actually - the Soviets wanted an IR-guided short-range system which would work in passive mod, unlike the Shilka which relied on radar for detection of air targets and guidance of cannons.

Insightful video on a system we don't hear of often in the Western bubble...I wonder how much each missile costs compared to say...a Patriot, just kidding.
what is the cost of this AA system
Your respect for this unit sounds like the same respect people give to mike tyson.
Good video as always.
Only stupid people will correlate a praise of a piece of military equipment with praise for the regime that build it.
Keep up the good work.
Anyone know what the purpose of the dish in the middle is? If the missiles are fire and forget and IR tracking, why have what looks like a radio recieving dish on it?
That's so they can watch the telecast of Putin's latest speech while bathing in white phosphorus.

Would this platform be able to support a cannon like a 105mm maybe… think it would be cool af lmao
This is why I need sprocket lol to experiment
Hear me out. The cannon from the M1128 MGS slapped onto this thing. 🤣🤣🤣
Very cool vehicle!
