- Back in January-while CHIMES AT MIDNIGHT was enjoying a theatrical run at Film Forum and we were preparing our disc release-actor Keith Baxter visited us in New York, half a century after he first starred opposite Welles’s Sir John Falstaff. Stopping by our kitchen for lunch, Baxter regaled us with memories of working with the venerated director, who cast him on the spot during his audition for CHIMES'S original theatrical production.
VERY excited Criterion is releasing Chimes at Midnight! Cannot wait to my hands on the blu-ray.
+sayyouwantthis I'm so excited I have half a mind to buy 2 copies when it does. One to watch and one in case of the apocalypse. Not lettin' it get lost a *second* time!
In my opinion Orson's best movie.
ORSON WELLES A GENIUS !!!!!!!!!!!!
one of the greatest movies ever
Welles had been working on this since he was in high school. He first attempted it at the Todd School as a 5 hour play. He next attempted it with the Mercury Theatre on Broadway, this was a monstrous production in which they put on part 1 one night and part 2 the second night, it had rotating sets, hundreds of extras, and a young Burgess Meredith as Prince Hal. It was a disaster. The third attempt was in the 1960s and its what Baxter describes.
It's astonishing, almost mythical, how much Orson accomplished before he ever came to film. My god, he did Citizen Kane when he was 25! And before that, he triumphed in theater and radio beyond what anyone had ever done. He is our greatest artistic figure here in the US. But nobody remembers him beyond being fat and doing lousy wine commercials. It's a tragedy, really. We should have streets nnamed after him. Certainly there should be a theater named in his honor. Sigh.
just watched Chimes at Midnight, fantastic! thank you
Perhaps the best of Orson Welles; certainly his own favourite. Good to see Keith Baxter here. Some years after “Chimes At Midnight,” he was on stage in “Sleuth” - simply magnificent!
This has been on my list of movies want to watch for a long time
beautiful story
Yeah I can't wait until its August 30th on Amazon because I can finally get a copy of this movie that I've been wanting to see and also its going to be my first Orson Welles movie I ever seen
Still a marvelous actor & man! Long may he wave.
Just read that Kieth died at 90! Swimming in the med.
I got to see this at Film Forum. What a wonderful film. On my wish list!
After he became King Henry V, was Hal a bit harsh to cut ties with Falstaff and banish him to 10 miles?
PS I bought it on DVD recently, the quality is excellent but there are no subtitles on the version I bought which makes Shakespeare's dialogue hard to follow at times.
very good looking for an 83 yo...quite a stunner in his day, must have been a hit around Old Compton street
One of the greatest “Shakespearean” films ever made.
