Too bad they don't even know their own area.
The Austin Metro is already in the process of stealth annexing the Kileen/Temple/Ft. Cavasos Metro just north of it w/its population of just under 500,000. It's no San Antonio, but absorbing it's northern neighbor would solidly and permanently leapfrog the Austin Metro over San Antonio as both Austin and Killeen are growing faster than San Antonio.
The Austin Metro (ranked #4 in Texas) can do this, because it is MUCH larger than the Killeen Metro (ranked #9 in Texas).
The first big step in taking over a smaller metro is the development of direct ties. 10s of Thousands of people now live in the Killeen Metro that actually work in Austin. That creates the critical links of people and business, and because it's almost all one way Austin to Killeen, It's Austin annexing Killeen not vice versa.
How people in a metro perceive themselves and their home is also very important. Increasingly people from the Killeen Metro say they are from Greater Austin Area. Killeen is considered a boring metro lacking a real personality. This supercharges the desire of people living here to say they are part of the prestigious Greater Austin Metro. That they live in Temple or Killeen is only mentioned as an afterthought if people need specifics. Killeen the larger and more distant city is just under 1 hr. from Central Austin which puts it within easy reach of Austin's rapidly growing greater metro.
Also making the merging inevitable is the fact that in addition to the rapid growth of the Austin Metro much of it to the north in Round Rock and Georgetown, the Killeen/Temple metro is also rapidly expanding and most of it's expansion is toward Austin. The actual distance between built up areas in both is about 10 miles on Hwy 35. It's only a matter of a few years before the built up areas of both areas come into full contact merging into one physical metro. The distance between the built-up areas of San Antonio and Austin is much further and neither are organically growing together in terms of population sharing or economic growth. Both Austin and San Antonio are large enough to maintain distinct centers of gravity free of significant influence from the other
The same cannot be said of the Killeen/Temple Metro. It already is feeling the heavy pull from the Austin Metro as Austinites move here from there and Austin's economic expansion starts to adsorb the basic, military-oriented economy of Killen.
When it finally does happen, Killeen will be the largest Austin Suburb, and probably will stay in that position since the merging of the metros should put Killeen's growth into overdrive as people living in the Southern parts of the greater Austin metro try to take advantage of the significantly lower cost of living the far North side of the eventual Austin Metro will have.
