It's complicated business technical jargon of what exactly means for a company to be a subsidiary and who has what power, its a broad term. But essentially in Pledis' case, Big Hit gives them financial support and in return they get a cut of Pledis' profits. Pledis itself functions independently, meaning all the management, production, and decision making regarding their artists are still done by Pledis.
