Magpie rescued from discarded fishing line

- We often say that 98%+ of our cases are due to the actions of Mankind and, sadly, litter makes up a MASSIVE part of that.
In this particular rescue, Lawrie and Jacob were called out to help a magpie who had become entangled in discarded fishing line on a small island.

It's a little bit of a shorter one today, apologies! It's been a very busy week for us here at Wildlife Aid and Lawrie (who edits 99% of our videos) hasn't had much time to get something put together! Hopefully the next one will be a little longer!
Not to worry. It's the effort and the kindness involved that counts. Thank you for caring and helping.
You are getting your priorities right. Helping wildlife first, videos later. Keep up the great work guys, you are all really special!
No need to apologize! Work comes first, and everything else second as you guys are always busy. We'll pretty much take anything ya'll feel like uploading and I'm sure people will understand if you need to take a week off or upload a bit later/a different day
Hey no issues here! Even the little ones are important and you guys have a lot to focus on
Just love You guys!
If only people would police themselves! Thank you for caring and sharing.
Very glad to hear SImon. I was smiling with warmth hearing Lawrie speak to the magpie: "i need this" while getting a big birdbeak of of his finger:)
Bless the people who even noticed the bird, and took the time to observe and call you!
The fishers often happily carry fishing rods, food, beer, camping chairs there - they can damn well carry these few grams of trash back.
They probably lost the line, because it was in the middle of the lake.
That's why I think that only biodegradable lines should be permitted.
"But... but... I'd have to get wet!"
Thanks for the video. I'm so glad someone called that in. Even 1 bird is worthy of saving! I hope things slow down for you soon.
Little fella thought this was his last minutes in this world. Thank you for rescuing it!
They way Lawrie easily steps off a rubber boat while holding a magpie deserves a seperate appreciation! 😄👍
Haha! Lawrie trained as a marine biologist before Wildlife Aid. He's very used to boats!
Magpies are the best thanks for rescuing this one!
Thank you for your help to wild animals in need, SIMON and team. You're HEROES!
Thank you for all you do. 💚💚💚💚.
Dear Simon, hope you are well. I love your way to comment and talk😊
Genuinely shocked that you saved the leg. ✩✩✩✩✩
Magpies are beautiful. Gosh, can you imagine, if everyone did what you said at the end, and just properly disposed of their rubbish, how many animals *wouldn't* be harmed. Well done WAF
Thank you so much for rescuing this lovely bird. I've seen many a bird hurt by carelessly discarded fishing line and just wish humans that leave litter were more respectful towards wildlife. This rescue holds a message for those people. Keep up the excellent work, you guys are great! 🙂
U are REAL HEROS.
thanks again to the Ateam great job guys
amazing rescue of this beautiful Magpie !! fishing lines are everywhere a problem for so many different animals in the world !! Thank u for helping this bird !! 🖤
@HelenaMikas
A rescue that brought a lot of joy . Made my day .The indifference of many people to plastic litter and lethal fishing
line is shocking. An issue that seems to be on the increase ..You are the best👍
You are absolutely the best - thanks for an interesting rescue and an important message to us humans-
Aaawww my favorite bird, love them😍! Took care of one magpie, when I was about 7 y old. All went well with the magpie 😀.
I came across a Wildlife Aid video a few years ago and have since subscribed and binge watched. I have now come across videos from Ocean Conservation Namibia and am in the process of binge watching them catching seal pups and freeing them from various ocean debris - mainly fishing line. It all seems so familiar. I can almost imagine Laurie running across those beaches, netting a seal pup and cutting it free from line as they do - whilst trying to avoid sharp teeth!!! It seems it doesn’t matter what part of the world you are in, man traps wildlife in discarded rubbish!
great work as always ! a happy 2023 to you all :)
Thank you so much! You too!
Such a lovely bird. Thank you guys for saving it!
Watching lawrie holding that magpie reminded me of Rod Hull and Emu. 😂
The Magpie didn't seem very grateful for its rescue!
terimakasih 🙏
NEAT!
Humankind - irresponable / careless Wildlife does not leave anything behind takes nothing with it. Blameless.
💖💖💖💖💖💖
How difficult is it to take your damn fishing line with you? How difficult is it to check on the hooks?
Hot damn. Poor birdie.
On a brighter note:
Bird: "HAPPS" biting finger
Lawrie: "I need this"
Chances are the line got rapped around that stump and snapped off.
Haha 😂😂
❤🧡💛💜💙💚
It seems you need a "beak restrictor" that you put over the birds' head so they can't bite you.
I might be able to sew you one from a stiff fabric or thin leather. But I don't know if you really want such a thing.
Can you pls explain why your subs never wary?? Much appreciated.
Unfortunately since the news of Simon's diagnosis we have starting losing a lot more subscribers and now they seem to cancel each other out... it's very sad to he honest.
Hate fishing line. I used to work in a park that allowed fishing in the lake there, and the stuff was always being left about by fishermen. We had several swans there die of lead-poisoning, so sad to see.
Luckily, fishing isn't very prevalent on my local river, although I did find a big net there a couple of years back, all caught up in a small tree (washed there during a flood I expect). Took ages to pull it all out of the branches (I really should remember to carry a pair of scissors when on a walk).
!
🖤🤍🖤
Irresponsible fishermen piss me off. I still remember this duck I couldn't catch with a hook in it's mouth (preventing it from eating) in Texas. Must have been a slow painful death
Ok. But the more i help the birds in this city Enschede in Netherlands to survive winter, the more the magpies scream fore food!💝🙏🕯
It’s always good to see Wildlife Aid video, no matter how long or short. ❤
Thank you all for taking care of this little one. 🥰 Even though he was a bit unfriendly. 😅
Exactly 💯
Lucky Magpie, getting a visit by Lawrie to help him/her out. I'm glad someone noticed them, and that the injuries weren't too bad. It's so sad that, as humans, some tend to cause so much damage and don't take into consideration the effect that we have on the wildlife around us. At least he/she was fiesty and a fighter !
I'm so grateful to the kind people who spotted this beautiful magpie and called for assistance 💜
As someone who has been around budgies my whole life, I'm only too familiar with that distraction technique at 2:42... 🤣xXx
The majestic, mischievous magpie. One of my favourite buddies as I am officially a Corvid ‘person of interest’.
They all follow me around wherever I go!
That's awesome! 🤗👍🏻
Thank you for this "adorable" magpie.
I regularly find fishing lines during my walks with my dogs (yes, even in the "clean" Switzerland - which is not so clean anymore, unfortunately !). I collect them systematically so that they are destroyed without possibility of harm and endanger an animal. It's so easy to collect the trash.... and it's important to do it even if it's not ours !
Poor sausage 💕 Fishing line is awful stuff for wildlife! Thank you for your efforts to save all the wonderful creatures 👏👏👏
I love how the magpie keeps bitting Lawrie and Lawrie was just like , 'That's not very nice.' Just so casual and patient.
Great rescue love Magpies. Our male swan died last year because of a fishing hook in him, I was so upset as fed him. Never understand why fishing is aloud in nature reserves.
Thank you on behalf of the magpie! 🤗
👏👏👏❤️...przypaliłam obiad oglądając ratowanie sroczki 😁 dużo emocji w Waszych relacjach 👏
It looks so smooth when team WAF does a rescue, I'd probably end up beaked in the eye and fall in the water. Good job guys and hospital staff 🌹
All that biting... did that hurt when it bit Lawrie?
Also: Almost knocked over the camera when flying away at the end.
That bird has anger issues 😂
When fishing, always remember to leave with more trash than you brought! It’s the sign of a good fisherman!
A great overturning of the 'one for sorrow' principle.
Clever, distracting the magpie's beak with a second q-tip! I didn't realize magpies had some blue feathers - very pretty bird!
One lucky magpie, thank you for rescuing him.
Well done!
Thank you.
Wonderful work, thank you for caring. 💗💗💗💗.
“I need this” 😂
Ty for saving yet another one of our birds caught up by fishing line. Ppl need to realise that leaving trash behind , fishing line , etc will one day lead all of our wildlife disappearing . 💕
What a beautiful bird!
It REALLY annoys me the amount of fishing line that's discarded by people !
It's no wonder they're getting a really bad reputation - when a minority of hobbyists bring the 'good guys' down to their level. For pity's sake - take YOUR rubbish home with you - DON'T just leave it where you're fishing.
Haa haha. I can't help laugh at the little Maggie Pies. Most 'birdies' will have a bite (less it is in shock), but the Magpie shows no mercy to the human condition. Like all the crows tho' very friendly and amusing if tame - or familiar with you. I'm loving all the local birds just now - they're loving the longer days too. Mr Blackie has moved all the dead foliage round the garden perimeter, again, Mr & Mrs Woodie looking for any grain or scattered oats, the wrens searching for every spider - wee Robin gets what he can from my kitchen, leaving little surprises on my kettle. So beautiful.
Thank you, guys at Wildlife Aid... love and respect you all.
Fishing should be banned! It's horrific for the fish and terrible for the environment. Makes me sick that people think it's acceptable!
Thanks for getting out there and saving this magnificent bird guys!
Well done for rescuing the magpie.
HURRAYYYYY!!!! Thank you for rescuing the Magpie!! We don't have them here where I am. I fell in love when I visited Sutton Coldfield MidLands
Little juvie birdie was fiercely independent and resented a bit of help, although it would be the better thing for him. So many people are inconsiderate about "just a bit of line" and don't want their time inconvenienced to untangle it and trash it. The birds and animals suffer so much from it as a result. Be mindful, folks!
Well done guys. I spent fifteen minutes cutting fishing wire from a coot in my local park which had two legs tied together. That stuff is awful and should be banned. The coot was so happy to be able to swim again. Well done!
More bins by canals, reservoirs, streams and rivers with notices on saying please dispose of your unwanted fish wire and weights here, would help. Also you should have to report loss of such items, to the Waterways Authorities.
Poor bird. As least it was spotted in time.
Thanks Wildlife Aid team 👍
it looked so blue in some angles, I'm guessing it's the way the light hits it? because ours in Australia are definitely only white and black
I carry trash bags on hikes, I always find garbage.
I once spent 2 hours chasing a heron that jad a 6 inch fishing lure with treble hooks stuck in its beak. Luckily I managed to catch it and get it out. Not all angers are irresponsible
This is one of the reasons I hate fishing. They leave lines and hooks everywhere. I took a friend's dog down to a local park with a pond a few years ago, and the poor thing got a hook in his foot. Children play in that park, too.
Great effort Lawrie and the team. I pick up litter wherever I see it and it seems to be on the increase!
He was very quiet for a magpie
Magpie: stop trying to help me *bite*
Shorter or Longer the rescues are always fantastic and I happen to like Maggies there are a family of them in the garden at least eighteen and no others come near, they even aggravate the cats.
Nice work with the Magpie.
This is my comment. There are many others like it, but this one is mine.
Lol
Well done once again 👏🏻
love this rescue
I really like how calm you all remain whilst being gnawed on by the animal you are rescuing. Thank you all 👍🇦🇺
Great job guys 👍
An Angry beak .. 😊
Have to admit I love the releases 🥰
Thanks!
Danke💖
Thank you for looking after all the wildlife 🦊🦊🦝🦝🐭🐭🐰🐰🦔🦔🦢🦢🦆🦆
