As an American, there's a mystique associated with the UK that never seems to waver - not even with the biggest upheavals of British politics and culture. There's a massive disconnect between the stories Americans tell themselves about England (because they're not thinking about the other 3 parts of the UK) and the reality
@@miimoreo I'm from germany and here lots of people LOVE britan, british culture. Mostly because america and the UK basically have a media monopol: Most movies, tv shows and music that are worldwide known are in english, thus most of the important people of these industries are from the US/UK and that's why people are obsessed with it. Kind of unfair in my opinion though, there are lots of great movies from other countries as well, but especially the movie industry (and hollywood) is so english-centered that it happens really rarely that a non-english movie makes it big.
yuuup. not to mention the documented high rates of domestic, emotional, financial, & physical abuse. + the giving up your goals & identity to take on his. it's crazy how our generation is the first to be free-ish but women (a lot of white women) are walking in to situations that women from the past would beg them NOT to walk in to. it's like everyone forgets how deeply cis men are influenced by systemic misogyny. that influence/socialization seeps in to relationships!
Just got out of a relationship with a D1 football player and I will never date another athlete again in my life. They’re disgusting, full of themselves, and love cheating.
WAG is literally a dismissive term to objectify women as belongings to the male fans whose concerns dont need to be accounted for, since the male fans are more important. Its so weird that anyone would willingly want to be associated with that term. Especially with the statistics matching increases of domestic abuse to football matches. I have a hard time not seeing it as self-degradation.
I think that wag culture can be super harmful because a lot of the time it encourages this idea that women who are into sports are just after the players. I've had this experience personally in formula one, where the "wags" are super super culturally important and many men on the internet or in real life when I talk about the sport discredit me because I apparently "want to be a wag" and it just piles up onto the problems of being a woman in the sports world. No hate ofc to the wags, it just gets frustrating.
as an f1 fan it’s really disheartening to see people like chr*stian h*rner say things like the female fans are only interested bc of the appearances of the drivers. the misogyny is so embedded within fans and the sport itself. really sucks :((
ahh I totally get this, I’m a huge f1 and American football fan and ive had guys try and say that I only like the sports because of the players and drivers when for me it’s so much more than that. and then to see those ideas sort of proved with wag culture can get super frustrating.
it’s esp sad when people in f1, like h*rner say things like female fans are only interested in the sport to look at the drivers. the misogyny in f1 is rampant in the fans and people in the sport. makes it not fun being a fan :((

@@whitney108 I started following in 2019 and “chose” lando as my driver and I feel like that was one of the worst decisions I made cause people attack me all the time and whenever I defend him against whatever hate brigade he has men are always like “another lando fan girl he’s not gonna sleep with you” and it’s so disheartening. They wouldn’t do that if I was a fucking kmag fan or a stroll fan (also lando hate has gone out of control recently)
I think a lot of issues I have with 'bloke-core' is that as a british person the word 'bloke' is very much a word used to describe a working class man and not an upper class man. The aesthetic-isation of the word feels like another way of romaticising the working class and reducing communal aspects of 'lower class' language. Maybe I'm going a bit too deep into it but its always made me a bit uncomfortable as a Northern English (which is another can of worms in english social studies), working class person (i havent watched the entire video yet so dont kill me if she discusses it later on)
@@00evaunit there's classism everywhere, we just talk about it in the UK. I'm always amazed how little class consciousness Americans have in spite of massive inequality.

Of course class is very real in the US, but it always seems to me like they don't view it as fixed as the UK does.
I feel like it's kind of a circle though, sports are getting more popular with young, online women, the writers capitalize on that and write sports romance books and then the women reading them start or continue to fantasize about being wags
It feels extremely funny to see D1 athletes get miscast as mysterious, douchey womanizers. These are 18/19 year old boys who spend most of their time locked in a gym with other 18/19 year old boys.
As someone who plays tennis, many players and tennis clubs really dislike the „Old money“ and luxury aesthetic and its association with tennis. People that turn up with expensive tennis bags and a whole fancy tennis outfit for their lessons are not taken seriously and usually are seen as people that play the sport for aesthetic reasons and not for the sport itself.
That lasting reputation is weird considering that tennis is extremely accessible relative to other sports. Like basketball or baseball it's one of the few that will have set-ups in public parks. I think it doesn't help that the big TV productions like Wimbledon lean into it, with the white outfits and stuff.
@@NoelleTakestheSky That's what I thought! Why look down on someone for their clothes, like ever? It's the same principle, no matter if you laugh at someone for looking too poor or too rich.
@@NoelleTakestheSky of course! its just that its important for many tennis clubs that tennis dosent come across as unattainable for people they want more people to start playing and are on the lookout for talents from various economic backgrounds, they dont want people to think that they need to spend a lot of money on a whole tennis outfit in order to start playing tennis. they are really working on making tennis more attainable, people can come in their gym clothes and shoes, they dont need a big tennis bag, they dont even really need a tennis racket since most clubs let you borrow them. They also dont want brands to exploit the "old money" association by selling tennis clothing and gear at a much higher price than they are actually worth
in argentina wags are called botineras, and they also receive plenty of harassment if the team loses matches. in 2022, tini who is a famous pop singer received ridiculous amounts of hate because she was believed to be the jinx at the first match of the world cup. it sucks to know that this misogyny happens everywhere!!

On the WAG situation, it is infuriating to me the amount of north american (from the US and mainly men) who act as if Giselle was a gold digger for divorcing Brady, while 1. She' fucking Giselle Bündchen, model, former VS Angel, philantrope, actress on The Devil Wears Prada, among other accolades, and 2. Here in Brazil she was the only reason many people knew of american football, and Brady was called "Giselle's husband" or "Gisello". I am glad girls like Taylor or Hailee are still seen for their careers over the relationship they have with athletes. The 2000s really were something.
As an official "Bri'ish" gal, seeing people find WAG life appealing and viewing sport inspired style (including Blokecore) extend beyond the UK has been a trip. But it has also always been utterly bizarre to me despite being born here. But on the other hand I'm also a goth. Being allergic to football culture is kinda expected. Though even despite that you occasionally find sports fans.
OH my god, I was so confused when I first started seeing this trend emerge. Its like congratulating the worst parts of the culture: WAG is literally a dismissive term to objectify women as part of the belongings and entourage of a football fan. Along with the statistical rise in domestic violence around football events, its really disgusting that any woman would want to be put in that second rate position. Its like asking to be a housewife buy with an outfit change to croptops and leggings
I think we are in a time of crisis-inflation where girls idealize being flower vases whose boyfriends have a lot of money and they just have to exist in a beautiful way, it is a way to mentally escape from the reality of their lives where being middle class or working class is not glamorous and since the internet only shares what is aesthetically beautiful, they aspire to obtain this or fantasize about that kind of life.
Blokecore and blokette is SO strange considering how the girls who wore football jersey's when I was growing up were looked at. On top of how the wives and gfs of football players were (or are) treated by the media? Weird asf trends for sure to observe as a European.
@@SibilaDelphos yeah. But it is a harmful belief to resent your own situation and aspire to wealth, rather than forming class consciousness and understanding why you are being kept poor and how you can resist it.
What is crazy about the whole blokecore is that is highlights so much the loss of the culture around fashion. I'm Brazilian and FOOTBALL jerseys, just like in the uk is something deeply cultural and rooted in our society, it is about where you're from, your family's tradition, football firms and etc. To see a person rotating jerseys from rival teams feels so weird. It makes me sad that people who are getting into the looks show no interest in the culture.
Yes! I'm Scottish but didn't grow up in the UK so my dad would always buy me Scottish football jerseys even though I didn't watch sports. It was more a way of showing and representing where i was from, I think especially because UK countries that aren't England are so erased it makes it more impactful to have something to show your culture, and i think the people who buy jersey's that mean something to them will wear them much longer than the trends cycle too because its not just a random aesthetic its more culturally significant.
Rigth? I´m not into football, but my dad is and I´m corintiana since birth bc of him. Even tho I don´t watch the games or am even aware of the championships no one would NEVER see me wearing a palmeiras or flamengo jersey. Never in my life. Sometimes I even avoid the color combinations (green and white esp).
100% !!! its so weird seeing people wear jerseys when they don't care about football culture. it used to be that if I saw someone wearing a jersey i knew they cared about the sport and were a fan of the team but now i have to second guess whether its for the aesthetic or passion. plus football teams have a lot of political affiliations so it can get even more confusing
I'm Mexican. It is the same in Mexico. However, I don't care about sports personally so I have 3 shirts- Mexico Rayados t-shirt, Galatasaray ( Turkiye) and one from Germany LMAO 😂😂😂 I wear them for looks. My 14 yr old cousin and I wear the Galatasary shirts for fun xD
Reminds me of music back in the day used to be able to look up music from another country to find new and interesting songs but now when you look, it’s just the top 10 songs that are already top 10 in your own country. It’s like we’re all the samejust like in the United States for example you go to city to city and they’re all the same because it’s all the same chain stores.
As a Brazilian is so funny to hear about the “popularization of soccer” cause in Brazil a soccer jersey is one of the first pieces of clotting u get before even being born 🤪
Formula One has gotten SO big lately as well as Professional Tennis! Definitely has to do with Challengers Movies + Roland Garros + US Open + The Olympics rolling around during a summer where everyone wants to be fit and healthy. Along with some really effective social media + PR branding of the F1 Drivers' personalities. I think there's a fashion trend that has gotten really big this year: just be "fit" and then everything will look good on you. It's about body and less about brands.
The whole "having a collection of different soccer teams' jerseys" is so funny as a Latin American (specifically Argentinian) you would NEVER catch us wearing a jersey from a rival team. We will at most support two teams: one because of family tradition, and a smaller local team. However, when it comes to foreign teams, we'll mix it up if we want to. It's fun and also if you get a good kit, it's really good for different weathers and activity levels.
i‘m german and it’s the exact same here! Most people support a local team and then at most one other team that their family/friends also support! Also teams always have (political) associations so just wearing a random jersey seems crazy to me bc then you might imply things you aren’t even aware of
Same in Turkey. We usually support the team which our parents and family support. We don't even wear something that includes the rival team's colors together.
Right? I'm a Chelsea and Bayern Munich fan and it'd be really weird if I wore another team's jersey for fashion sake. I feel like they represent much more than aesthetics.
i feel like that goes for actual football fans anywhere (the exception is people who collect classic kits). It's only the people who wear them for the aesthetic who will wear whatever shirt they find.
The absolute irony of so many men blaming single women for causing a 'male loneliness' epidemic because men need the horizontal tango or they may pick up a pew pew, but then the gfs of athletes are blamed for the exact inverse, for having too much horizontal dancing, leading to the team to lose.......make it make sense men!!
I always love to see the ripple effect on how modern/historical events and movies play a role on the current fashion trends. No matter how much the cycle continues it will always be fascinating

As a women who is extremely interested in sports I find it kind of sad that there is this reputation that women are only interested in sports when famous WAGs/WAG culture are/is involved. Female professional athletes already have a hard time getting the same acceptance as male athletes and so do female sport fans, so I really don't understand why so many women feed the "women are not into sports"-clichee even further. It especially frustrated me during the Taylor Swift - NFL time. I am a swiftie but the amount of swifties I saw who said stuff like "the only time I'm interested in football is when Taylor arrives" was really frustrating. Even the NFL thought a good marketing technique is to put Taylor Swift in the spotlight until all her fans follow. Instead they could actually try to make girls and women interested in the sport
This trends are so interesting because I’m Mexican and here in Mexico soccer tshirt culture is so strong and so different! You would never see someone wearing a tshirt from a team they don’t support and if I started wearing one mixed with a skirt and trendy bows my friends would make fun of me for transforming into a straight teen boy look

‘Blokecore’ representing a more upper class and put together aesthetic is so interesting to me as a northern working class gal. Because typically, ‘bloke’ is used to describe a working class (often) ‘tradie’ (mechanic, electrician, etc).
I'm from Argentina and using a football jersey is so normal in Latinoamérica and I noticed that after the world cup more and more people using it in the fashion space. Edit: just to add something, like one of the comments says (about al-right using a country symbol's), it's the opposite here because our president it's a libertarian but he uses more alt-right/American symbols instead of the ones from our country. It caused that small brands to start using local symbols in their fashion.
@@phenomenal-flop It depends but personally I would say this usually isn't the case on Argentina since most alt-right are anti-football, anti-national products and basically anti-anything that is associated with low class people, they might use the flag as a symbol tho. There are alt-right nationalist of course, but they are not the most popular type of alt-right wing people. Also the recent victories in football boosted people's interest in the national team football jersey.
@@phenomenal-flop it's the opposite in Argentina actually. The president has never been photographed near an Argentinian flag or symbol and instead coopted more internacional alt right symbols like the libertarian flag and the statue of liberty (this makes sense considering his brand of alt right is globalist rather than nationalist).

And now the US women’s soccer team are playing for the gold medal in Paris⚽. These ladies are my superheroes, right behind my WTA superstars🎾……I’ve loved watching tennis for years!💕
Honestly, yeah, the co-opting of the Brazilian flag by extremely conservative right-wing movements was VERY effective over here. If you're a Brazilian person walking around with a yellow and green t-shirt I will still side-eye you.
yeah its the same thing in the uk, wearing an england shirt outside of a major sporting event like the euros or world cup (and during the olympics since england compete under gb) just makes it seem like you're a racist - and like the extreme level people tend to try to avoid
In Germany the football association noticed that ppl were seeing the national jersey as right-wing or conservative so they made it pink 😅 it was an outrage but i thought it was quite funny
I also think the notoriety of athletes especially this year has to be counted - with social media, it's been so easy to keep up with every single event in the Paris Olympics, even the ones that traditionally don't gather as much attention, and the athletes' names are everywhere. Even if you missed the event, if you're catching up via social media posts, the athletes are tagged, and so many of them have seen their follower count grow by a LOT.
As another official "Bri'ish" enby, I can't help but associate football (read: soccer) shirts and certain brands (particularly Adidas) as part of 90s working class British culture, especially if you look at the music scene from the time, you had Britpop, ladettes, the Gallagher bros etc. If I walk through my local city centre today, *everyone* is wearing sportswear. Apart from me because I'm also a bit of a goffik. I guess I could try Health Goth as a concession? ;)
i think soccer club shirts have been present in the working class everywhere honestly cuz latam is the same, some people actually associate anyone who wears jerseys casually as lower class and uneducated and have even a bias against it because of its popularity with the working masses

You're on point about the reclaiming of the Brazilian flag! I'm Brazilian and might I add, even during the World Cup I didn't see as many people using yellow and green, as it was still during Bolsonaro's government and firmly associated with him, so the white and blue version of the football uniform became popular too
literally started frothing at the mouth when i saw this video and texting my friends like a crazy person i have so many thoughts on this topic and can’t wait to hear about what you have to say
As a Brazilian, I find it challenging to discuss Brazil on a global stage. We're a vast country with a rich culture, but it often feels like we're overshadowed. We deeply value our culture, sometimes to the point of idealization and we love to see foreigners react to our culture, but it can create a false sense of prominence. Our art and culture don't get the same recognition as, say, the US. (That's why artists like Anitta have to sing in Spanish and English to break into the international market). It's like we're constantly trying to prove our worth, so we felt included and flattered by the whole Brazilcore thing. But I certainly feel like it was a state of happiness due finding comfort on an hegemonic space (deep down we know our participation in this whole scenario is indirect and that's quite frustating).
omg brazil mentioned!!! its really nice to see an US perspective about it because wearing football shirts here is so common but also very meaningful! people use shirts from our teams and from international ones too - its normal to see people wearing shirts from european teams as well. our yellow shirt was taken by the alt-right, yes, but working class people still use theirs teams shirts anyway. i'm not a football girly and i don't feel comfortable wearing football shirts because its something very beyond fashion here in Brazil. when someone wears a Corinthians shirt or a Flamengo shirt its a statement about their loyalty to their team.
the reclamation of symbols while people also wear it to be fascist is roughhhh. it seems like one would have to be very intentional with styling or very specific pieces to not face assumptions they really don't want. it's sorta like saying you love harry potter on a queer dating app; if you don't make it clear that you're not transphobic, it's gonna read as a dogwhistle. i would avoid people who dress super patriotic in public unless the subversion/reclamation is visually clear
I agree with this… I’ve thought about dipping my toes into the reclamation, but being white and living in a rather conservative area I don’t really want to risk it & make anyone uncomfortable. I feel like I’d have to have blue hair and a pride pin or something like that to make it work, and at that point I think I’d feel uncomfortable drawing that much attention from people who disagree with my idea of what America should be. I’m glad that people are reclaiming the flag though, even in the current political climate, I just don’t think a piece of fabric should have so much power. It’s virtually deified in some circles & that’s so whack
@@mariapaulaledezma7052 hmm i guess where I live camo isn't as strongly coded that way, like there are specific camo garments that read pro-gun but most camo just gives fashion. I wear colorful camo or very feminine-cut camo shirts sometimes
I’m surprised there’s no mention of Tolami Benson in this video, she’s been reviving the ‘WAG’ fashion aesthetic and was even mentioned in Vogue for her WAG revival. She’s been blending sportswear and fashion sooo beautifully in the recent Euros but I understand the video was just touching on the different aesthetics. Loved the video (as usual) ❤️❤️❤️
I’m going to assume it’s because she’s American. But it does seem like a missed opportunity to see how WAG culture has evolved. Especially given how quickly she became a fashion darling and considering the notoriety of her boyfriend and the fact that they’re both black. I don’t know of a non white British wag that has gotten as much attention as her

Thank you so so so much for addressing Brazilcore in the context of Brazilian politics! It’s been wild seeing people in Europe and the US wearing brazil themed fits when we ourselves currently have a very complicated relationship with our own flag. There’s a movement to reclaim it and detach it from Bolsonaro’s image and politics, but I have to admit I still feel uneasy wearing a jersey, or even wearing anything with green and yellow in the same outfit. It was a pretty traumatic period for a lot of people here, and while I absolutely love our flag, I cannot for the life of me forget what it was co-opted to represent.
I feel like in the UK Colleen Rooney has transcended Wag to full on national treasure status. You know what, good for her it can't have been easy being catapulted to fame at the age of 15, she's made the best of it. Wagatha Christie is the most entertaining thing to come out of wag culture, if you know, you know...
I’m just here to say, the feminization of sports was done brilliantly by those who dress miss Tate McRae! she made a spin on rockstar girlfriend and made it athlete girlfriend! I love it~
As a brazilian, it was awful watching a symbol of hope and happiness be co opted by right wing conservatives. There really was a movement to reclaim it, specially by queer people and poc. I want to get a new Brazil jersey, but wouldn't wear it around elections for exemple for fear of being misinterpreted lol
Consider getting some pins or patches to wear with the shirt that makes your stance against the far right abundantly clear. That's what I tend to do and it works for me.
People go apeshit when Joe Burrow throws a football and does a little spin, yet it took Lamar Jackson 2 MVPS and multiple all-time great level seasons for people to finally admit his greatness. Joe's great, but we all know why he gets all of the social media attention. And it's not just his passing yards

In Argentina we have dressed like blokecore for more than 20 years. It's not a fresh style, it's the same old garbage for us. Anyone dresses like this to cook a barbecue at home or go to the market.Adults, young people. They even sleep dressed like that.
There are variations. My generation and demography wore it as children, teens, and into adulthood ( so basically forever, a fundamental roots staple ) I am Gen X
As someone in their late 20s that had bleach blonde hair as a child and is now as my coworker described it "sorta blonde" very very few adult women have naturally blonde hair and the closer to platinum it is the more likely it's bleached.
Same and exactly. Only 5% of Americans have what most would call blonde hair as adults, and most are the medium to dark ash blonde or strawberry. Probably like .1% of Americans maintain natural platinum blonde hair past puberty
In argentina edits of the national men´s football team with taylor swift music were really popular specially on tiktok during the world cup, even the official AFA account did some, that shows how many women are getting into this fan spaces that men "claimed" their own.
I like how the American part is empathised because, as a non-American, most of these videos don't make sense to me. That will also be the part that irritates me and makes me click of a video, as if it is the "norm, as if ut us world wide (which it isn't). So thank you for empathising that part.
37:45 The term you might be looking for here is compulsive heterosexuality. People shorten it to comphet. Usually its used in the context of women believing that they're attracted to men due to societal standards and enforcing heteronorms but I'd say this would fit perfectly into what you're saying here about male athletes

the story of blonde wags also prevail in baseball! a lot of the players date blonde white women. also, being able to keep your hair blonde is definitely money-consuming, which makes sense for dating baseball players. it takes a long time for them to get to the major leagues and hardly get paid while they do.. so i wonder that’s why their partners are able to stay with them for a long time
I love that you mentioned Brazil! Since Bolsonaro became so strong our flag became a distasteful symbol for a long period and still is sometimes. But in moments like the Olympics, and even in the LGBTQIA+ Pride parade earlier this year, it's awesome to see it as a symbol of the union of our people ❤🇧🇷
Another note on kids sports (21:10) in my area, extracurricular sports have become much less casual, way more competitive and much more expensive. There aren’t really casual kids rec teams anymore, there is so much pressure to compete. Almost all of the teams are club teams (that you can only really be on if you tryout or have otherwise trained in the sport) with exorbitant league and/or tournament fees (a volleyball club in my area charges at least 1500$ with 250$ upfront if your kid is on the roster). I’ve found that coaches, sports associations, and teams expect ludicrous amounts of commitment from 6-14 year olds, it is normalized for older kids to wake up at 4:00am for practice just to then immediately go to school, it is normalized (and even considered “part of the grind”) to drive 8+ hours to tournaments, some which last weeks at a time. With all that considered, you can see why parents are reluctant to put their kids in extracurricular sports when they have to sink so much of their time, energy, money, and commitment into something their kid might give up after a season.

its funny because here in Brasil a man wearing a soccer team shirt and havaianas is not seen as fashion, its seen as almost insultingly sloppy and unkempt for any occasion other than going to the beach or hanging out with male friends at a cheap bar (which is due to classist reasons because that style is associated with the favelas). Back in the 2010s there used to be thousands of memes on brazilian pages that went like "when you spend 3 hours getting ready to go on a date and he shows up in a soccer shirt"
I remember dating a fellow member on my high school wrestling team. The coach insinuated I was the reason he lost. Yeah, it was definitely me and not the fact he was incredibly sick. It was probably Covid, but we didn't know what covid was yet.

you're video is so accurate because since mondo duplantis have beat the record in pole vault, her girlfriend desire inglander became very popular lately especially on tiktok (although i think she was already famous before that) and it's very funny to see that she corresponds exactly to the type of wag you're describing in the video: blonde, skinny, and she gives an old money/luxury style and it's even funnier to see people in the comments absolutely attracted by her life, especially by the fact that she has an athlete boyfriend
I'm from Boston, living in Arizona, and there's a young guy where I work that alternates between wearing Yankees caps and Red Sox caps. Funniest thing I've seen in a long time.
My concern with the aestheticization of sports, and commodification in general, is that it shifts focus from the cultures and athleticism to drama and appearances. Sports culture has historically been aligned with the working-class, and in the U.S., where soccer is less popular, most fans are black and brown. Thus, its fashion has been borrowed from poc without credit once again (I've been wearing jerseys to school since the second grade). This trend seems to align with 'BookTok' producing new sports 'fans' who care more about how players look than the actual game. It’s one thing to appreciate a player’s appearance, but unlike fictional characters, athletes are real people. This trend also reflects poorly on women who aren't part of the 'fandomization' of sports. Recently, I've been uncomfortable with the edits and POVs about rising soccer star Lamine Yamal. He's incredibly talented, but people are focusing on his s*x appeal and relationships, despite him just turning 17.
Uh. These have been my generation's and culture's styles since our childhoods, teens, and into adulthood. I am Gen X A lot of black people didn't even wear the styles when i was a child

Could you make a video exploring the relationship between materials in fashion and fashion trends themselves? I'm curious about how our relationship with natural fibers like cotton and wool have changed as especially trends such as athleisure and now sportswear have come and gone and come again.
My friends own a salon, and I occasionally work the reception desk for them. I can confirm that most blonde women are not that way naturally. Or if they are blonde by birth, it is not the bright, yellow blonde most people think of when they think of a blonde
the first place i began seeing WAGcore was the popularization of sports romance on booktok. obviously romance books with athletes have always been around but before its popularization on booktok i had never seen a display in a real life bookstore of "hockey romances" and the like. another thing is that hockey romance is without a doubt the most prevalent in the genre and i think the extreme whiteness of hockey also ties into that, it's the fantasy of being in a super white super het relationship.
You'd love GAA shorts by the brand O'Neills, they come in every colour to represent the different counties and clubs in Ireland. A while back you made a video on how clothes aren't as well made as they used to be and you were able to capture Ireland's very complicated history in such a culturally sensitive and accurate way, that was succinct too!! It was just fantastic. Anyway, thanks for making another brilliant video, I love them!!
As a Brazilian, I came here to say that we were indeed afraid of using the flag in general (I only used it when the football team was playing) and after “Braziliancore” it became more comfortable to use our colors without being linked to the far-right party
i will say to add on to the thing about all hockey wags being blonde, the nhl is the most white (and therefore conservative) of the big 4 north american sports leagues (nfl, mlb, nba, nhl). this just exacerbates all of the issues that surround being a wag in a way you don't see happening with the other leagues. also this might just be because the nhl is not as popular as the nfl or the nba or whatever, but hockey wags are wayyyyyy more private about their lives. i don't really know a single one that works at being an influencer and a lot of them even have private socials. all that to say, i've been following hockey for a while and dr. lexi la fleur brown has always been super cool and she's definitely my favorite wag!!!!! her and her husband do a lot of amazing work to bring more diversity into hockey and also talk about a lot of the (racist/homophobic) issues in the hockey community and i just love them
I think 'WAG culutre' amongst women's football could take up a different connotation. As far as I'm concerned (also as a lesbian football fan), the UK women's football particularly prides itself for inclusivity. Inter-player relationships are far more common (there is always the question of who's the wag since it is largely interchangeable, or simultaneous/non-existent when they are teammates). Instead of women's football becoming feminised thus holds popular appeal amongst female/queer audience, it is almost the sports itself having this particular attraction towards people of different age, sexuality, etc.
This is all gold. I’d also mention, if you were an athlete growing up, but weren’t good enough to earn a college scholarship or compete at an elite level (which I’d argue is most of us former athletes), you graduate high school and suddenly, you’re …just really into fitness now? A lot of my style as I was coming of age was influenced by “how can I look cute when I have practice/competition later?” You feel good in the sportswear cuz it is associated with feeling athletic. It’s also worth noting, more millennial and gen z women grew up playing sports compared to women in older generations. As a result, there are more women making careers in the sports industry and a lot of them are entering a landscape that has stayed …pretty stale. I often roll my eyes about the dads who’d coach my teams growing up cuz they’d see a girl re-tying her ponytail, y’know to do sports better, and they’d be like “LADIES this isn’t a HAIR SALON, this is SOFTBALL.” I’m sure any woman making sports her career has heard some iteration of that at every step so I can see girlifying sports as a cultural necessity.

Being a WAG sounds like a complete nightmare given cishet male athletes seem to be unable to be monogamous
yuuup. not to mention the documented high rates of domestic, emotional, financial, & physical abuse.
Because they get high media coverage. More click worthy than the faithful ones.
would kinda serve to be a wag in a lavender marriage tho
WAG is literally a dismissive term to objectify women as belongings to the male fans whose concerns dont need to be accounted for, since the male fans are more important. Its so weird that anyone would willingly want to be associated with that term. Especially with the statistics matching increases of domestic abuse to football matches.
I have a hard time not seeing it as self-degradation.
30:45 we really can't escape misogyny because why are women blamed for men losing in sport games that they weren't playing😂
No hate ofc to the wags, it just gets frustrating.

ahh I totally get this, I’m a huge f1 and American football fan and ive had guys try and say that I only like the sports because of the players and drivers when for me it’s so much more than that. and then to see those ideas sort of proved with wag culture can get super frustrating.

I think a lot of issues I have with 'bloke-core' is that as a british person the word 'bloke' is very much a word used to describe a working class man and not an upper class man. The aesthetic-isation of the word feels like another way of romaticising the working class and reducing communal aspects of 'lower class' language.

the recent booktok explosion of sports romance probably also affected the popularity of WAGs/women attending sports games

You know you can take something seriously, and still buy expensive stuff just because you like it, right?

To be fair, men will call any woman getting a divorce a gold-digger.

In Uruguay its the same. You’ll see people wearing a River shirt, but you’ll never see a Peñarol fan wearing a Nacional shirt
i‘m german and it’s the exact same here!

Yep, I'm afraid the wags culture won't benefit female in sports (esp female athletes) instead they capitalized this "new market"

Why would u watch an inferior product where there’s a lot less speed power athleticism etc ?
Honestly, yeah, the co-opting of the Brazilian flag by extremely conservative right-wing movements was VERY effective over here. If you're a Brazilian person walking around with a yellow and green t-shirt I will still side-eye you.
yeah its the same thing in the uk, wearing an england shirt outside of a major sporting event like the euros or world cup (and during the olympics since england compete under gb) just makes it seem like you're a racist - and like the extreme level people tend to try to avoid
this is so upsetting I thought it was only an american cultural thing to be bigoted under the guise of patriotism
omg yes and I hate it sm! I was so sad I couldn't wear Brazilian core bc I didn't want to be mistaken as a... you know... p0cket-nar0 supporter
In Germany the football association noticed that ppl were seeing the national jersey as right-wing or conservative so they made it pink 😅 it was an outrage but i thought it was quite funny
I love your our growing up styles
Don't marry a sports elite member; be one.
Before that
As gen x we already wore it as children
Then mixed with styles in the 80s
and 90s
The mix is literally my demography's and culture's styles
Fun thing is we have been T O T A L L Y e r a s e d from all our cultures now being called '' F A S H I O N ''
Also we grew up around your styles as children
You look like young x or millenial to me
So this is before you saw it
@@ktcaZ-fs-bv7gv fashion has always about going back a few decades and stealing silhouettes and elements so ots no surprise jerseys are now street fashion and cool lol
As a Brit I’ve never really understood the obsession with wags, so hopefully this will contextualise it.
I’m not plugged into fashion at all (still like these videos) so when I saw the title my brain thought WAG was a slur for a few seconds
i still think it is a slur sometimes 😭 it just sounds like one
Just wanted to comment and say this video is so well scripted, edited, and beautifully curated. I’m just so appreciative! BTW it has been very weird as a Hispanic/Italian woman seeing soccer become “mainstream”. It feels strange as someone who is a first generation American and felt often ostracised for not watching nor being interested in the Super Bowl or the NFL, and rather opting for soccer events. I’m a huge soccer fan and what I’ve noticed is for most people this is just a phase/trend that will pass. But I welcome all genuine sports lovers!! We really need more women in this space!!
But I certainly feel like it was a state of happiness due finding comfort on an hegemonic space (deep down we know our participation in this whole scenario is indirect and that's quite frustating).
omg brazil mentioned!!!
its really nice to see an US perspective about it because wearing football shirts here is so common but also very meaningful! people use shirts from our teams and from international ones too - its normal to see people wearing shirts from european teams as well. our yellow shirt was taken by the alt-right, yes, but working class people still use theirs teams shirts anyway. i'm not a football girly and i don't feel comfortable wearing football shirts because its something very beyond fashion here in Brazil. when someone wears a Corinthians shirt or a Flamengo shirt its a statement about their loyalty to their team.
football being 'beyond fashion' is the perfect way to put it
I was there the night you were at cabaret and it was so phenomenal 😭 the fashion was everything!
You should’ve said hi!!
the reclamation of symbols while people also wear it to be fascist is roughhhh. it seems like one would have to be very intentional with styling or very specific pieces to not face assumptions they really don't want. it's sorta like saying you love harry potter on a queer dating app; if you don't make it clear that you're not transphobic, it's gonna read as a dogwhistle. i would avoid people who dress super patriotic in public unless the subversion/reclamation is visually clear
I’ll add Chappell Roan’s merch with the camo cap as an example!
@@mariapaulaledezma7052 hmm i guess where I live camo isn't as strongly coded that way, like there are specific camo garments that read pro-gun but most camo just gives fashion. I wear colorful camo or very feminine-cut camo shirts sometimes
cringe
I’m surprised there’s no mention of Tolami Benson in this video, she’s been reviving the ‘WAG’ fashion aesthetic and was even mentioned in Vogue for her WAG revival. She’s been blending sportswear and fashion sooo beautifully in the recent Euros but I understand the video was just touching on the different aesthetics. Loved the video (as usual) ❤️❤️❤️
Thank you so much for this. I was looking for this exact comment. She's the only reason why I care about the intersection of fashion and football. ❤
I’m going to assume it’s because she’s American. But it does seem like a missed opportunity to see how WAG culture has evolved. Especially given how quickly she became a fashion darling and considering the notoriety of her boyfriend and the fact that they’re both black. I don’t know of a non white British wag that has gotten as much attention as her
also how our cultures are being made about race. or monorace.
we grew up multiracial.
Oh so THIS is what old preppy is. Like rich aesthetic. You should deffo do a vid on old preppy vs new preppy because kids nowadays call a whole different aesthetic “preppy”
Omg can’t believe I found my own video used in a Mina Le video as a reference 🥹🩷 an honor!
Indeed! I just added a couple of your vids to my watchlater to check them out!

Oh wow yall styled like other generations is interesting
I love it~
You styled like other generations is interesting
brilliantly ?
looks like when lady gaga started out and badly imitated other generation's styles ?
As a brazilian, it was awful watching a symbol of hope and happiness be co opted by right wing conservatives. There really was a movement to reclaim it, specially by queer people and poc. I want to get a new Brazil jersey, but wouldn't wear it around elections for exemple for fear of being misinterpreted lol
Consider getting some pins or patches to wear with the shirt that makes your stance against the far right abundantly clear. That's what I tend to do and it works for me.
We saw this same dynamic with Mario Sharapova getting much more fame and sponsorship money than Serena Williams despite her being an inferior player.
i know it's just a typo but Mario Sharapova made me laugh so hard. Thanks for that
I agree however in the eyes of most people Maria was more attractive.
@@FriendlyBatDoom right that’s my point, her beauty was valued more than her athleticism!

Actually Travis is Taylor's WAG
depends on the perspective. a swiftie who isn't interested in football considers Travis as Taylor's WAG.
A football fan who isn't interested in pop music considers Taylor as Travis' WAG.
Just like to me Victoria Beckham is David's WAG, because I am a huge football (soccer) fan but couldn't care less about the Spice girls and don't really know anything about them

it's funny how many aesthetics the idea of athleticwear spans. i'm partial to the side that borders on techwear/cyberpunk aesthetically and the outdoorswear functionally, and i'm not mad that those types haven't become trendy
Funny. they were l i t e r a l l y m a s s m a i n s t r e a m in the 90s ?
What generation are you ?
It was trash wear at some point because oversaturated ?
In Argentina we have dressed like blokecore for more than 20 years. It's not a fresh style, it's the same old garbage for us. Anyone dresses like this to cook a barbecue at home or go to the market.Adults, young people. They even sleep dressed like that.
There are variations. My generation and demography wore it as children, teens, and into adulthood ( so basically forever, a fundamental roots staple )
I am Gen X
I wouldn't be caught dead wearing a PSG shirt tbh.

The term you might be looking for here is compulsive heterosexuality. People shorten it to comphet. Usually its used in the context of women believing that they're attracted to men due to societal standards and enforcing heteronorms but I'd say this would fit perfectly into what you're saying here about male athletes
Maybe it was Wagatha Christie, but I’ve actually never heard a USAmerican use WAG or call a anyone in the US a WAG. I almost exclusively think of it as a British Footballer thing.
I’m a f1 fan so in regards to drive to survive a lot of people, including the drivers don’t like it, in fact some divers refuse to partake in it anymore
the story of blonde wags also prevail in baseball! a lot of the players date blonde white women. also, being able to keep your hair blonde is definitely money-consuming, which makes sense for dating baseball players. it takes a long time for them to get to the major leagues and hardly get paid while they do.. so i wonder that’s why their partners are able to stay with them for a long time
I love that you mentioned Brazil!
36:34 oh HEAVY on "homoerotic" because you will see fandoms of sports anime are consists of girls and women shipping the characters and writing homoerotic fanfiction about them.
its funny because here in Brasil a man wearing a soccer team shirt and havaianas is not seen as fashion, its seen as almost insultingly sloppy and unkempt for any occasion other than going to the beach or hanging out with male friends at a cheap bar (which is due to classist reasons because that style is associated with the favelas).
A mina le video is always appreciated!
my town in the UK has, in the last year or so, monetised all of the public tennis courts we used to have :( like you have to go online and book a slot it’s so annoying, but i feel bad for kids who are gonna miss out because they don’t have a debit card to pay online with yet so they just can’t play tennis with a net!

you're video is so accurate because since mondo duplantis have beat the record in pole vault, her girlfriend desire inglander became very popular lately especially on tiktok (although i think she was already famous before that) and it's very funny to see that she corresponds exactly to the type of wag you're describing in the video: blonde, skinny, and she gives an old money/luxury style

Mina Le you just looked so insanely pretty in this video. Makeup was popping off, hair was popping off, and your outfit?! You always eat.
He's incredibly talented, but people are focusing on his s*x appeal and relationships, despite him just turning 17.
its also so odd when i see classmates of mine wearing kits from rival teams in the same week
Uh. These have been my generation's and culture's styles since our childhoods, teens, and into adulthood.

@ktcaZ-fs-bv7gv Rosalia was born in the 90s, so she was part of that generation, so she is not an imitator. This comment is about her album Motomami and the biker aesthetic she used for it, from the covers to the songs and mv.

Another thing to add to this the rise of sports romance in booktok
Could you make a video exploring the relationship between materials in fashion and fashion trends themselves? I'm curious about how our relationship with natural fibers like cotton and wool have changed as especially trends such as athleisure and now sportswear have come and gone and come again.
Have you seen minas video “clothes are so much worse now” ? It kind of touches on this topic! Lots about knitwear in it
from manmade to natural to manmade again

OMG A CERTIFIED MINA LE CLASSIC
I'm from Brazil and appreciate that you commented about the issue with our "national jersey"!
As a Brazilian, I came here to say that we were indeed afraid of using the flag in general (I only used it when the football team was playing) and after “Braziliancore” it became more comfortable to use our colors without being linked to the far-right party
your editing is INSANE it's one of my fav things about your vids!!!!
i will say to add on to the thing about all hockey wags being blonde, the nhl is the most white (and therefore conservative) of the big 4 north american sports leagues (nfl, mlb, nba, nhl). this just exacerbates all of the issues that surround being a wag in a way you don't see happening with the other leagues.
also this might just be because the nhl is not as popular as the nfl or the nba or whatever, but hockey wags are wayyyyyy more private about their lives. i don't really know a single one that works at being an influencer and a lot of them even have private socials.
all that to say, i've been following hockey for a while and dr. lexi la fleur brown has always been super cool and she's definitely my favorite wag!!!!! her and her husband do a lot of amazing work to bring more diversity into hockey and also talk about a lot of the (racist/homophobic) issues in the hockey community and i just love them
I think 'WAG culutre' amongst women's football could take up a different connotation.
