As a non-native speaker I must say I have to disagree with the word 'digestible'. I didn't understand enough to make sense of it. What is "window dressing"? What does he mean by 'sex as a personality'? What is "sleepwoking"? And I think it's in bad taste to just insult anyone not of the same opinion as yours as "homophobic". I mean, maybe I am a homophobic in his eyes now, who knows, I didn't even understand his opinion lol.

I struggled with my identity as a teen and young adult because I couldn't relate to any of these action movie women. Ripley really is one of the few fictional women I can look up to
I've got similar experience with male characters. Always dumb idiots with big muscles who are suave and talk as if they know better. My solace for this was interestingly enough anime, where there's a much bigger variety, including praising intellect, compassion and community and show them capable to show emotions. Even their body types and fashion have more variety and are drastically different. Same reason Link is still my favorite protagonist: cause the games and plot are all about being smart and helping people, instead of who can shoot the most people quickest
This comment made me realize how much of this awful representation of women in media made me feel bad about myself when I was younger. I would literally say shit like "I wish I was a boy" why? because boys were cooler. Boys got all the action and all the cool toys and all the cool clothes and girls got dresses and pink things and sat and looked pretty for the boys. I didn't want that, I wanted to be like the boys I saw on TV and video games. But alas, I had to grow up being told that as a girl I have to be "ladylike". What an awful realization.

Completely unrelated, but my favorite female action/shooty/ violent thingy media type entertainment peice is the protagonist of nightmare reaper. The character is quite plain with not many defining traits. But the little story provided is very good.

It starts as a mirror to Luke( No Originality), then she becomes a tubstomping Mary Sue in the second movie, and then in the third her story is rushed and feeling for Kylo come out of nowhere. And then, at the end, rather than owning who she is, she takes the Skywalker name, making the name meaningless throughout the franchise. Disney has DESTROYED the franchise. It will never be the same.
To be fair I seen people defending her talent while criticizing the character. Even people who truly hate the sequels. Literally every bit of charm Rey has its thanks to Daisy Ridley giving every second she had with those terrible scripts full commitment. She's such a good casting choice and they tossed that infectious joy in the trash! I can't help but be fearful of them bungling Rey even worse in the new movie.
Always remember: bad representation, >99% of the time, is due to *badly written characters*, and is thus the fault of the writers, not the actors (who are typically caught in a contract before they get to read any finalized dialogue or direction), and certainly not the characters themselves (who are fictional constructs, even if they are based on real people).
@@Blockistium not many people were causing the actors and the ones that did were a small minority among a minority as majority of people we're upset with the story writers, because they were actively trying to destroy the characters and not do logical things that would make everyone happy like have the original trio meet each other.
Let us not forget studio executives who force writers to water down or totally rework - or even remove! - characters who they deem “unrelatable” or “too off-putting for the target demographic”. I would think it’s more often executive meddling than the direct fault of a writer except in the rare cases where a mega-famous writer/director has most of the power over a production.

Best advice i saw for writing is don't write for any gender. Instead write for the characters you want to write the story for, and just swap genders as needed later if need be. Turns out psychologists figured out men and women are more similar than they are different, so just ignore sex altogether when writing characters until the editing phase and you'll make great characters regardless.
I only mostly agree. Firstly, understand that they are, if not human, a fully fledged being with ideals and strengths and flaws like everyone. Then add in the gender and society, see how they relate to it; how it shapes them, but also how they shape it. This allows for characters like Sokka who learn that part of what is holding them back is pointless gendered ideals, that once able to express his deep care for the group, he was able to put that power into his fighting. I’m not saying that what your implying doesn’t have merit, most characters don’t need to be about gender. What I am saying is, that in the hands of someone who understands how gender actually works could make more fleshed out characters.
It's a large annoyance I have with most writers writing female characters, they're thinking "I am writing a female character" which isn't anything wrong but depending on the writer it ends up making them write the character with forced "feminine" traits or trying to counter balance said feminity with overly "masculine" traits, meanwhile these concepts are purely invented by social norms and it ends up making the character feel unrelatable because they simply don't feel like an actual person, write your characters like human beings and not a caricature of what you think women are. Writing a male or female character should produce very similar results.
So there's a few problems with that conclusion. Society deeply influences us as people, so how society treats sex and gender impacts who we are as people. So in order to write an "authentic" character, we have to write a character that's been molded by society. And that includes gender norms. And we also need shorthands to understand who the characters are, which is why writers rely on stereotypes. Stereotypes are shorthand for character traits we recognise. A good writer will use these stereotypes to quickly introduce a character, and the build on it by subtly breaking the mold to reveal the true character. And a bad writer will try to do the same, but end up with just the stereotype. However, if you just write gender interchangeable characters, you can end up with a lot of the most cliché action heroines, for whom being a women is no more than a trick to try to lure in audience.
In the abstract world of the art and writing, yeah the problem is writing a character that has a particular label attached, rather than a character that has had a unique background of interactions with that and every other characteristic that form a tapestry of experiences which informa behaviours, attitudes, values and responses. But you can never escape the real world, and a real world consideration is ABSOLUTELY that many movie execs and analysts still only believe movies can be successful if the presence of the marginalised is reduced to tokenism, objectification and fetishisation, which itself is often reinforced by that special breed of douchebag on Twitter that gets the tiniest whiff to the contrary and immediately starts screeching incoherently about SJWs and pandering and the right wing talking heads who package up the same points in more civil language. And really this applies to any marginalised group - women, queer people, trans people, PoC, disabled people, neurodivergent people....
@@DenUngeHerrHolm I think what needs to be remembered is that bad writing is bad writing. The interchangeable character approach shouldn't mean you disregard the world around them or write the character "like a man" but rather that the writer should start the character as a person before influencing that person with stuff like world setting. The point should be figuring out who they are. Things like gender are merely facets of a character. At the end of the day we are all our own people and should be written as such. There is no absolute framework you have to use so let the characters be themselves and find the words to describe them later. Of course take everything with a grain of salt. I'm not the god of writing and you shouldn't listen to them anyway.

Though I have seen stories with female main characters being written in a similar fashion in worlds where there's no such things which I think is awfully confusing and nonsensical, though you do mention stereotypes being shorthands which makes sense but I think in worlds where there's no stereotypes it hardly works.
God thank you, I get so frustrated with the representation of women in media and when I bring it up with anybody they get more frustrated with me than the issue at hand and I think its partly because I can't put it into words correctly. It’s especially frustrating when so many men characters have deep and diverse personalities, backgrounds, and motivations, but then there’s like… 3 female characters: “damsel in distress love interest” “badass asshole military girl” and “sexy killer”
The worst ones end up being the ones where "woman" is their personality, rather than a personality of "Action Hero" who happens to be a woman. We should never blame the character for being bad since the characters are only following a script. There are examples of great female heroes, but it feels like more often nowadays they're turning into cardboard cutouts whose whole personality is just a single note.
I do think that because we live in a gendered society, your gender will always in some way be part of your personality. A specifically gendered perspective can also be a tool for exploring certain experiences (how does the story's society react to the character, what struggles are associated with their gender, do they accept or reject social norms etc.) but it should never be an excuse for 2-dimensional cardboard cutout characters. The character should be written as a full person, regardless of how prominent their gender plays a role in the story.

Yeah I think this is exactly the issue. The only femalr characters that the mainstream white guy historically have been accepting of are women who are technically men except "I could bang her". You can see this is how shows like How I Met Your Mother and Game of Thrones romantisize the idea of women who "act like a man/is a bro"; Sansa gets shit in the books and the show, in the latter they even went as far as make her act more like a guy who embraced trauma and violence to strongarm her desires to get things done. Like Sansa was not respected until she was like: "I'm glad I got r**ed", and everyone loves Arya despite the fact that she is a complete unhinged psycho who's first thought to every problem is to murder them, and their family, for no good reason too. They love her cause she's a tomboy, while Sansa is a very great example of a strong female character where the strength doesn't derive from violence, intimidation or sex, but from her compassion and her refusal to give in to inflicting violence upon others "because that's what they did to me"
Bad writing is bad writing, it's not a contest in who has it worse. No one is blaming women for being bad characters, though that is a very common excuse for terrible story-writers when people don't like their garbage. Sad that the first part was meant as satire because you hit the nail on the head.
Plenty of people still blame feminism, saying women make bad action stars, or get hyperbolic in their criticism of women in action movies. But it was worse in the 90s and 80s. And now people are blaming the gays, the mythical woke, and the angry LGBTQ+ for whatever movies they don't like. Same shit, different wrapping.

Saying women make poor action stars is pure sexism, and I think that people like that are vastly in the minority. Blaming feminism, however, is not the same thing, and is much more appropriate, as ideologies always run the risk of harming the story, when pushed in a narrative. Terrible writers will often inject themselves or their believes into a story where they end up sacrificing internal logic or continuity. When a radical feminist does this it often turns into a female Mary Sue character that can really hurt the story as a whole. I don’t personally think many people blame gay and trans people, rather they blame bad writers who don’t know how to properly use them in a story. Also I need to clarify that this happens to any bad writer with a “fanatic” ideology, not just people on the left.

I am a DM and have written many characters. I find writing them as their being to be the best, and often ignore their gender in the same way i ignore their eye color and such. But I don't typically write human characters because i find them boring, and it's a fantasy world without our gender norms.
Yeah, I find that with a lot of my characters (pc and npc alike) if they can be genderswapped without it changing their story too much, gender isn't really important to their story or themes, and so I just roll for it
Sigourney Weaver in Aliens, Charlize Theron in Mad Max and Atomic Blonde, Lindsay Hamilton from Terminator 1 and 2 - these are some wonderfully written women leads in cinema. Shame that this isn't more common though
I Write a lot and this is something that I tackled unintentionally. I write dark fantasy, very dark fantasy, and I think what I’ve discovered is the best way to write a strong female character is just to have her story make sense. Take my Knight character, Minerva. In my story she is known as ‘The Black Knight’. Very Arthurian I know, but when we meet her she’s already a badass. But she’s a Veteran soldier who’s served as a knight for years. She’s a badass who’s had those experiences to get that bad ass. At the same time she enjoys cooking, and is deeply in love with a male character. She’s a multi layered person who’s very complex, because you can’t ever write a stereotype of a person. Nobody is 1 layered, all humans are complicated people. The trick to good writing is remembering that.
Gonna say that anyone who has yet to watch Arcane is missing out on some INCREDIBLE representation of women and queer people. It also has amazing art, something I have feeling people on this channel can appreciate.

Somebody needed to say this, it's not the whole community or the whole group, it's the ones who are making actually problematic for the rest that are terrible, I've also heard people say "one loud person ruins it for the rest" but why should it be that way? Why not keep that person's actions separate from the rest of the community who hasn't even affected anyone?
There definitely is terrible representation of women- but that’s just it, it’s representation of tropes and characters, not real people. There are terrible male characters too. Even more so, there are some really amazing characters who just so happen to be female and/or lgbt+. Real representation is just people being people, in an ideal world it wouldn’t matter what gender a character was or who they loved because it’s all just a part of human experience. Personally I really dislike the newfound pandering of media because representation shouldn’t be an advert. I really don’t care who a character is because that isn’t what makes a good character and it’s not what makes a bad one either. Fact is, a bad character is a bad character and it doesn’t matter what gender or orientation they have. It shouldn’t be used to justify hatred.
Most people are ok with saying that a male character shit especially if they're white because they believe they won't hurt or offend anyone by saying that, this is why there is a larger amount of better written male characters who are white because there is healthy criticism.

For context, and this is going to sound a bit weird, but there's a recurring dream that's been following me for years about a mythological black horse, almost skin and bones, that travels from town to town throughout the ages leading the townsfolk to their demise. From leading an entire village to blindly walk into a raging river, to tricking people into removing parts of their body to feed it. No matter how much research I've done, I can't quite find anything like it in folklore. There's the kelpie, of course, but that's not quite right. This is older, wiser, and every dream carries the feeling that this creature has been here longer than time itself, and I would absolutely love to see it in your style.
Casting is often a problem since the industry rarely casts women who actually look like fighters. Then, since the physicality isn’t there, they focus on sexuality to distract us. It’s getting better so hopefully the trend continues.
my mom grew up in the 70s, and couldn't give a shit about celebrities or movies most of the time... except for carrie fisher, whose death hit her pretty hard. she talked about how AMAZING it was to see a woman on screen who was her own character, not just arm candy for the men. princess leia was really important to her and so many other little girls growing up.

The only way this whole thing can go well is we need to stop treating women, black, and lgbtq+ characters as a selling point. true, but even when its written as a minor character trait some people will still call it pandering or being woke. for example, the new Lightyear movie, people are calling it woke just because it one of its character a lesbian when its not a focus of the story at all. Or how, MCU Eternal called woke as well just because one of the eternal is gay and have a bit of romance sub plot, even though 80% of the movie is about a love triangles of straight characters.

This is the most aggressive strawman I have ever seen. There is a problem with a lot of modern female heroes being written as too effortlessly perfect rather than fully fleshed out characters because the people writing female characters in the modern day are motivated not by a desire to tell a good story, but by political drama. It's not that female heroes are inherently bad, it's that Hollywood largely won't let them be flawed and complex and the people writing them aren't very good writers. There are still some great ones for sure, but the uncharacteristic influx of bad ones often makes people forget that.

I love representation. Or, that is to say, I love representation when it is done correctly. You're not wrong here. A character should never be characterized by _just_ their gender or _just_ their sexuality, because reality isn't like that. We are a complicated mix of traits, and ideally, we should seek a similar complexity in our written characters.

That last line; who actually says that? Men, women, characters of all colours, ages and builds can all equally be just as good as eachother if they're represented and written well. The problem is and has always been that representation seems to come before actually writing a good character, and that's what the problem always will be when activism comes before qualification.

I don't believe ur suffering from internalised homophobia, we've gotten to a point where any critiques made about something that happens to fit a group that can stick an oppression label on it gets thrown away as "Oh ur a sexist, homophobe, transphobe" etc. Well written and inclusive characters are usually praised by the majority, but we've reached a point where alot aren't well written and are only included for virtue points which I'd argue is the most bigoted thing you can do, but people like to jump through hoops to pretend otherwise. It's also strange how we've reached a point where people can only identify and feel included by characters that either look like them or have the same sexuality as them. I identify heavily with comic characters such as Captain America, Miles Morales, Beast Boy etc. And it's not becuase they're straight or one happens to be white, it's because their stories and character traits resonate with me, which is how inclusion used to work. I don't blame you for hating what the media is doing, anyone who tries to diminish your criticism and feelings down to "you hate urself" is a very confused idealog who doesn't want to understand where ur points are coming from. Most people who critique this stuff are the people who want these characters to fit more organically and meaningfully, but they all get labelled as bigoted by very closed minded people.

I've heard such comments IRL, it saddens me such comments have darkened your page. I personally dislike the pandering, but I like shows and movies that have solid representation without killing plots to do it. (Most recent example I've seen has been Ozark)

I've got similar experience with male characters. Always dumb idiots with big muscles who are suave and talk as if they know better.
My solace for this was interestingly enough anime, where there's a much bigger variety, including praising intellect, compassion and community and show them capable to show emotions. Even their body types and fashion have more variety and are drastically different.

This comment made me realize how much of this awful representation of women in media made me feel bad about myself when I was younger. I would literally say shit like "I wish I was a boy" why? because boys were cooler. Boys got all the action and all the cool toys and all the cool clothes and girls got dresses and pink things and sat and looked pretty for the boys. I didn't want that, I wanted to be like the boys I saw on TV and video games. But alas, I had to grow up being told that as a girl I have to be "ladylike". What an awful realization.

Literally every bit of charm Rey has its thanks to Daisy Ridley giving every second she had with those terrible scripts full commitment. She's such a good casting choice and they tossed that infectious joy in the trash! I can't help but be fearful of them bungling Rey even worse in the new movie.
Always remember: bad representation, >99% of the time, is due to *badly written characters*, and is thus the fault of the writers, not the actors (who are typically caught in a contract before they get to read any finalized dialogue or direction), and certainly not the characters themselves (who are fictional constructs, even if they are based on real people).

@@Blockistium not many people were causing the actors and the ones that did were a small minority among a minority as majority of people we're upset with the story writers, because they were actively trying to destroy the characters and not do logical things that would make everyone happy like have the original trio meet each other.
Let us not forget studio executives who force writers to water down or totally rework - or even remove! - characters who they deem “unrelatable” or “too off-putting for the target demographic”. I would think it’s more often executive meddling than the direct fault of a writer except in the rare cases where a mega-famous writer/director has most of the power over a production.

@@isdrakon9802 I have my reasons for putting it largely at the feet of the writers(chiefly the fact that I *am* a writer), but yes - studios do make ridiculous demands, as do directors, producers, et al, and they certainly can make matters much, much worse.
Best advice i saw for writing is don't write for any gender. Instead write for the characters you want to write the story for, and just swap genders as needed later if need be.
Turns out psychologists figured out men and women are more similar than they are different, so just ignore sex altogether when writing characters until the editing phase and you'll make great characters regardless.
Personally I think the most emotionally resonant writing is on characters that have been inspired by people you know.

I only mostly agree. Firstly, understand that they are, if not human, a fully fledged being with ideals and strengths and flaws like everyone. Then add in the gender and society, see how they relate to it; how it shapes them, but also how they shape it. This allows for characters like Sokka who learn that part of what is holding them back is pointless gendered ideals, that once able to express his deep care for the group, he was able to put that power into his fighting. I’m not saying that what your implying doesn’t have merit, most characters don’t need to be about gender. What I am saying is, that in the hands of someone who understands how gender actually works could make more fleshed out characters.
It's a large annoyance I have with most writers writing female characters, they're thinking "I am writing a female character" which isn't anything wrong but depending on the writer it ends up making them write the character with forced "feminine" traits or trying to counter balance said feminity with overly "masculine" traits, meanwhile these concepts are purely invented by social norms and it ends up making the character feel unrelatable because they simply don't feel like an actual person, write your characters like human beings and not a caricature of what you think women are. Writing a male or female character should produce very similar results.
If I said anything that is factually wrong I'm always happy to learn, just be nice about it please.
So there's a few problems with that conclusion. Society deeply influences us as people, so how society treats sex and gender impacts who we are as people. So in order to write an "authentic" character, we have to write a character that's been molded by society. And that includes gender norms.
And we also need shorthands to understand who the characters are, which is why writers rely on stereotypes. Stereotypes are shorthand for character traits we recognise.
A good writer will use these stereotypes to quickly introduce a character, and the build on it by subtly breaking the mold to reveal the true character.
And a bad writer will try to do the same, but end up with just the stereotype.
However, if you just write gender interchangeable characters, you can end up with a lot of the most cliché action heroines, for whom being a women is no more than a trick to try to lure in audience.
In the abstract world of the art and writing, yeah the problem is writing a character that has a particular label attached, rather than a character that has had a unique background of interactions with that and every other characteristic that form a tapestry of experiences which informa behaviours, attitudes, values and responses.
But you can never escape the real world, and a real world consideration is ABSOLUTELY that many movie execs and analysts still only believe movies can be successful if the presence of the marginalised is reduced to tokenism, objectification and fetishisation, which itself is often reinforced by that special breed of douchebag on Twitter that gets the tiniest whiff to the contrary and immediately starts screeching incoherently about SJWs and pandering and the right wing talking heads who package up the same points in more civil language.
And really this applies to any marginalised group - women, queer people, trans people, PoC, disabled people, neurodivergent people....
@@DenUngeHerrHolm I think what needs to be remembered is that bad writing is bad writing. The interchangeable character approach shouldn't mean you disregard the world around them or write the character "like a man" but rather that the writer should start the character as a person before influencing that person with stuff like world setting. The point should be figuring out who they are. Things like gender are merely facets of a character.
At the end of the day we are all our own people and should be written as such. There is no absolute framework you have to use so let the characters be themselves and find the words to describe them later.
Of course take everything with a grain of salt. I'm not the god of writing and you shouldn't listen to them anyway.

Though I have seen stories with female main characters being written in a similar fashion in worlds where there's no such things which I think is awfully confusing and nonsensical, though you do mention stereotypes being shorthands which makes sense but I think in worlds where there's no stereotypes it hardly works.

It’s especially frustrating when so many men characters have deep and diverse personalities, backgrounds, and motivations, but then there’s like… 3 female characters:
“damsel in distress love interest” “badass asshole military girl” and “sexy killer”
The worst ones end up being the ones where "woman" is their personality, rather than a personality of "Action Hero" who happens to be a woman.
We should never blame the character for being bad since the characters are only following a script. There are examples of great female heroes, but it feels like more often nowadays they're turning into cardboard cutouts whose whole personality is just a single note.
I do think that because we live in a gendered society, your gender will always in some way be part of your personality. A specifically gendered perspective can also be a tool for exploring certain experiences (how does the story's society react to the character, what struggles are associated with their gender, do they accept or reject social norms etc.) but it should never be an excuse for 2-dimensional cardboard cutout characters. The character should be written as a full person, regardless of how prominent their gender plays a role in the story.

Yeah I think this is exactly the issue. The only femalr characters that the mainstream white guy historically have been accepting of are women who are technically men except "I could bang her". You can see this is how shows like How I Met Your Mother and Game of Thrones romantisize the idea of women who "act like a man/is a bro"; Sansa gets shit in the books and the show, in the latter they even went as far as make her act more like a guy who embraced trauma and violence to strongarm her desires to get things done. Like Sansa was not respected until she was like: "I'm glad I got r**ed", and everyone loves Arya despite the fact that she is a complete unhinged psycho who's first thought to every problem is to murder them, and their family, for no good reason too. They love her cause she's a tomboy, while Sansa is a very great example of a strong female character where the strength doesn't derive from violence, intimidation or sex, but from her compassion and her refusal to give in to inflicting violence upon others "because that's what they did to me"

No one is blaming women for being bad characters, though that is a very common excuse for terrible story-writers when people don't like their garbage.

Saying women make poor action stars is pure sexism, and I think that people like that are vastly in the minority.
Blaming feminism, however, is not the same thing, and is much more appropriate, as ideologies always run the risk of harming the story, when pushed in a narrative.
Terrible writers will often inject themselves or their believes into a story where they end up sacrificing internal logic or continuity. When a radical feminist does this it often turns into a female Mary Sue character that can really hurt the story as a whole.
I don’t personally think many people blame gay and trans people, rather they blame bad writers who don’t know how to properly use them in a story.

I am a DM and have written many characters. I find writing them as their being to be the best, and often ignore their gender in the same way i ignore their eye color and such. But I don't typically write human characters because i find them boring, and it's a fantasy world without our gender norms.
Yeah, I find that with a lot of my characters (pc and npc alike) if they can be genderswapped without it changing their story too much, gender isn't really important to their story or themes, and so I just roll for it

I Write a lot and this is something that I tackled unintentionally.
I write dark fantasy, very dark fantasy, and I think what I’ve discovered is the best way to write a strong female character is just to have her story make sense.
Take my Knight character, Minerva. In my story she is known as ‘The Black Knight’. Very Arthurian I know, but when we meet her she’s already a badass. But she’s a Veteran soldier who’s served as a knight for years. She’s a badass who’s had those experiences to get that bad ass.
At the same time she enjoys cooking, and is deeply in love with a male character.
She’s a multi layered person who’s very complex, because you can’t ever write a stereotype of a person. Nobody is 1 layered, all humans are complicated people. The trick to good writing is remembering that.

So let's presume you're honest, and your worry is that allegations of homophobia can and is used to shut down conversations. Then I'd say... Yes, I agree. That is a problem. Some people use these sorts of allegations in order to show themselves as morally superior, which isn't cool.
But it is a tiny problem, compared to the ones advocating for trans genocide, for outlawing queerness, and for banning even talking about these things. And like it or not, in these comments... you are arguing for their side. And that should be worrying you.

Somebody needed to say this, it's not the whole community or the whole group, it's the ones who are making actually problematic for the rest that are terrible, I've also heard people say "one loud person ruins it for the rest" but why should it be that way? There definitely is terrible representation of women- but that’s just it, it’s representation of tropes and characters, not real people. There are terrible male characters too.
Even more so, there are some really amazing characters who just so happen to be female and/or lgbt+.
Real representation is just people being people, in an ideal world it wouldn’t matter what gender a character was or who they loved because it’s all just a part of human experience.
Personally I really dislike the newfound pandering of media because representation shouldn’t be an advert. I really don’t care who a character is because that isn’t what makes a good character and it’s not what makes a bad one either.

For context, and this is going to sound a bit weird, but there's a recurring dream that's been following me for years about a mythological black horse, almost skin and bones, that travels from town to town throughout the ages leading the townsfolk to their demise. From leading an entire village to blindly walk into a raging river, to tricking people into removing parts of their body to feed it.
No matter how much research I've done, I can't quite find anything like it in folklore. There's the kelpie, of course, but that's not quite right. This is older, wiser, and every dream carries the feeling that this creature has been here longer than time itself, and I would absolutely love to see it in your style.

my mom grew up in the 70s, and couldn't give a shit about celebrities or movies most of the time... except for carrie fisher, whose death hit her pretty hard. she talked about how AMAZING it was to see a woman on screen who was her own character, not just arm candy for the men. princess leia was really important to her and so many other little girls growing up.

true, but even when its written as a minor character trait some people will still call it pandering or being woke.
for example, the new Lightyear movie, people are calling it woke just because it one of its character a lesbian when its not a focus of the story at all. Or how, MCU Eternal called woke as well just because one of the eternal is gay and have a bit of romance sub plot, even though 80% of the movie is about a love triangles of straight characters.

This is the most aggressive strawman I have ever seen.
There is a problem with a lot of modern female heroes being written as too effortlessly perfect rather than fully fleshed out characters because the people writing female characters in the modern day are motivated not by a desire to tell a good story, but by political drama. It's not that female heroes are inherently bad, it's that Hollywood largely won't let them be flawed and complex and the people writing them aren't very good writers.
There are still some great ones for sure, but the uncharacteristic influx of bad ones often makes people forget that.

Or, that is to say, I love representation when it is done correctly. You're not wrong here. A character should never be characterized by _just_ their gender or _just_ their sexuality, because reality isn't like that. We are a complicated mix of traits, and ideally, we should seek a similar complexity in our written characters.

Men, women, characters of all colours, ages and builds can all equally be just as good as eachother if they're represented and written well. The problem is and has always been that representation seems to come before actually writing a good character, and that's what the problem always will be when activism comes before qualification.

I don't believe ur suffering from internalised homophobia, we've gotten to a point where any critiques made about something that happens to fit a group that can stick an oppression label on it gets thrown away as "Oh ur a sexist, homophobe, transphobe" etc. Well written and inclusive characters are usually praised by the majority, but we've reached a point where alot aren't well written and are only included for virtue points which I'd argue is the most bigoted thing you can do, but people like to jump through hoops to pretend otherwise. It's also strange how we've reached a point where people can only identify and feel included by characters that either look like them or have the same sexuality as them. I identify heavily with comic characters such as Captain America, Miles Morales, Beast Boy etc. And it's not becuase they're straight or one happens to be white, it's because their stories and character traits resonate with me, which is how inclusion used to work.
I don't blame you for hating what the media is doing, anyone who tries to diminish your criticism and feelings down to "you hate urself" is a very confused idealog who doesn't want to understand where ur points are coming from. Most people who critique this stuff are the people who want these characters to fit more organically and meaningfully, but they all get labelled as bigoted by very closed minded people.
