      ha, I need my competitive advantage, while they train, I'm fiddling with my cameras haha. To be fair, at Burke Their lighting conditions in the woods on their race day was much more challenging that our race day. We lucked out with overcast skies!

    these videos make me always in the mood to hit the trails. Its so fun to watch you just fly down these routes, knowing it would take me 10x longer to do the same route since ive only had a mountain bike since february.       @@SkillsWithPhil Lower j bar aka stage 2 is the worst trail by far up there. Down low there was a nice skidder line off it, but some assholes keep brushing it in.

    Phill I had told ya already, a common mortal soul can not ask someone like Win Masters or somebody of that calibre to get adviced how to aproach the event but you shurely can.. So I hope you did so..
    BTW, the SENSOR was the better option for this, in my opinion..

      The sensor would have been a great choice for stage 2. It would have been a terrible choice for stage 6 :P

    NOO!! I saw it yesterday, swallowing the front rider, shouldn't this be foreseen by race organisers? Doesn't make much sense a time race bumping into others riders in a stretched trail. Hope ok

    Perfect example of what's wrong with MTB these days. Pay to be lifted to the top and gravity is your speed. We used to climb the fire roads up and not walk, then ride the snow slopes down. Like real men. Oh I can go downhill fast, but I'm gonna take the ski lift back up. Phil seriously huffing and puffing going down hill. Why whimps.

    That crash sucked you were on a great pace, definitely just lost focus a bit. You are doing great for someone who doesn't like climbing. And to the trolls it's OK to hate climbing especially boring ass fire roads that never end.

      The crash sucked. I was trying really hard to take things smoothly and had been doing a good job. I should have given the rider in front more time, but with how quick that stage was, 45 seconds seemed like enough. So overall, it was my fault and since my livelyhood doesn't depend on race results, it didn't bother me too much. I think I would have gotten that stage had I not gotten distracted.

    That’s too much climb. The biggest one I’ve done was 5 miles and 3000 ft.

      Anything over 4k feet and you will be directly cutting into downhill performance for most pros.
      Xc climbs belong to xc races. Not this crap.

    Seems like your bars twist a lot in crashes Phil, probably cos you ride so damn fast! I would try overtorquing your stem clamp bolts a bit if they aren't already, or maybe using a bit of carbon gripper on the steerer tube. That said it would make the bars harder to twist back into place

    Is it hard to get out of the "playfulness" style of riding (gaps, manuals, landuals etc etc) you normally do for most videos on your channel and back into the race style ever? Just curious to hear (if I can get a reply 😀) your thoughts on the ability to go back and forth between "disciplines" or "styles" - whichever term you prefer.

      Nah, It just depends on my mood and headspace. My objective when racing is going fast, my objective for having fun is finding new lines/gaps. Both of those are involve being able to read terrain.

    I went down the EWS line on Petzen 2 weeks ago (without the climb) and while I crashed a few times it was an amazing experience for me! Didn't go as fast as you here tho. Great video!

      Yes my headset is literally disassembled right now. It's been a source of frustration TBH. I've been greasing ever few rides but that awful noise comes back after a hard day of riding. My friend suggested i try something different this time, so we'll see if that works.
