@@EverybodyLovesSarah why feel bad? Being a kid is great most kids are happier. Kids have less stress. They have more time to do things. They have more friends. They are more care free. What made highschool so amazing for me was the fact that I did “make my own choices and did whatever I want”. I get it, I know a lot of people hated highschool. But just because it was an amazing time in my life why would you feel bad? I’m still very close with about 8 friends from highschool from 10 years ago. The best friends I will ever have in life and we made SO many memories to look back on.

First time watching. Former educator and parent of adult children. Night shift comment: building confidence in kids is so important. Pretty impressive to say “taking a shower and going to bed,” leaving two kids in charge of the boat and really keeping the family safe. Talk about the unspoken statement “I trust you to be responsible,” building confidence. Love it!

Trying to fit into "the norm" is often what causes kids and teens immense stress and anxiety. Our "traditional" upbringings are also very disconnected from nature. I commend you for being so adventurous - your kids are going to be extremely successful, that's obvious!

Like those kids, I grew up on a sailboat, from 8 to 17 years old. I can safely say that it was one of the most defining and important experience of my life. I'm now almost 40 and low and behold, work as a marine biologist, and have spent a good chunk of my adult life working onboard research vessels, sailing to the Arctic and Antarctic and continuing the fantastic journey my parents had started. I think that, for me, the hardest thing is 1) to know that I will never offer such a childhood to my own children, and 2) to see my parents sell our beloved sailboat.

This was one of my favorite episodes ever. Everyone seemed so relaxed, and it was SO GREAT to see Kate at the helm, and "the kids" (not Keith) left in charge of making crucial turns while the parents slept. If you want your kids to become leaders, you need to trust them, give them increasingly more opportunities where you truly let go and step away. It gives them chances to learn through mistakes, and become empowered and satisfied with life.

Great video Renee, It was especially amusing when Jack said he was saddened by not having the opportunity to drive a car. Hmm, Jack.... you can drive a large sailboat that's bigger than a semi truck and expertly follow the coordinates to a location on the ocean! Ask yourself if the kids on land can do that. Kate can do that at 15 years of age and have her family go to bed because they trust her skills. You are the lucky ones with no bad teachers and no heckling , no physical assaults or other things like that just parents and siblings that love and respect you. Cheers from Canada.

Speaking as an 18 year old about to start uni - I think the values you guys have instilled in your children are worth so much. They all have an idea about what's really important in life, what their priorities are. Few young people have that, it's getting tougher to figure that out these days I would say.

Don’t worry about missing out, or spending time wondering about what is “normal”. I bet if you asked 100 kids would they rather be in school or sail around the world, 90% would chose sailing around the world with family. I think family is more important. Going through school, yeah you make friends but as you get older, people change and move on and most of your school friends, you won’t even talk to most of them 10 years after high school. I think what you guys are doing is amazing, and the kids will thank you for it. Keep your heads up. Being here in atlanta i can tell you…. You’re not missing much!!! Love you guys

Your kids are getting a "real" LIFE education that not many people get to experience. The family bonding that you're all experiencing is Priceless. Enjoy it while it lasts!😁👍 As long as you can home school, you're golden. Teachers spend only an hour or so each day with a whole "class." The one-on-one individual attention hours that you spend each day are generally more productive. Let's face it, most of daily life is ground-hog day, with much over-rated routine. Get up, go to school/work, go home, eat, watch some TV, then repeat. We walk and drive down the same streets, eat at the same restaurants, visit the same stores and parks, wait at the same stop lights each day, etc. It's NOT what life should be about! Life should be about making memories with your family, not sitting in the same office cubicle every year, waiting for a retirement day that may or may not come, with health that may or may not hold out until retirement. You guys are all very fortunate to be in your situation, living the different experiences you encounter every day and night. Your kids are learning responsibility and the sailing skills that will carry them through their lives. 😎 And thank you guys for giving us the vicarious life escapes with each episode.🏝️⛵🌞

It was great hearing from "the kids" about how they see their lives onboard vs what might have been ashore. And we all know how Keith feels about being "aground" again. But what about you Renee? How was your transition to boat life when you all first started out? Do you think you missed out on PTA meetings, mall shopping, running the kids everywhere for their school ad sports events, talking to neighbors over the fence? Just being curious here.
I really love seeing how Kate and all your kids take the underway watches with such understanding and being very confident in their own abilities in handling such a large yacht, at night, alone. Remember Anna having a real flare for being underway. Even if jer heart wasn't always into it. Yet she was a master at boat handling!

They are broader humans for having experienced this life and that is very valuable.

I loved traveling the world as a child. Although we did it by planes, trains and automobiles. I have been to places and seen things most kids, much less adults will never see. I thank my parents every day for taking my brother and me all over. I have wonderful memories and experiences to think back on. It made school a lot easier in some classes, especially world history, because I had been to many of those places. We've also lived from the east coast to the west coast, to Michigan to Georgia. I thought I had a pretty normal childhood.

There are pro’s and con’s to everything. Just because you raise your family in the same house, you all went to the same school, same town, same people doesn’t make you happy and well rounded if you’ve never been anywhere. These kids got a taste of that life and are now boat kids that travel the world, have seen the world, eaten different foods, experienced different cultures, learned new language.
When you are 70 looking back on your life do you want to say I was born, raised, worked, had my family and now in my twilight years in Dallas or look back saying my folks dragged me on a boat where we circumnavigated the world for 7 years and it was an incredible time.
I was one of these “hostage kids” because my Dad was in the navy and we moved every 3 years. It was normal for us. The best part is we we t and explored wherever we were. My spouse gets absolutely sick of me saying “I’ve been there” when we are watching tv or a movie.

Do they have the youthful energy and motivation to seek more out of life? Do they have enough education to be able to question and learn about any subject they have a desire to delve into....here it's obvious they have been given all of the criteria to be or do whatever they might desire while helping their fellow humans...awesome...congrats to the parents and these kids already know how fortunate they are and they are enjoying life's ups and downs...booyah!

What is normal these days? I’m glad your not seeing what normal has become. Kate I never went to a prom and lived to be a happy grown up! Your experiences far exceed anything that’s happening here in the US. What a fabulous life you have but you know that. I envy risk takers and people who don’t follow the norm. It follows you in adulthood. All of you will be brave confidant adults! Follower for as long as Renee films no matter where your family is.

The experience alone that Anna, Jack, Finn and Kate have put them 110% more knowledgeable than other young adults in traditional upbringing. It’s amazing how the majority of young adults wouldn’t know the basic skills like how to change a tire and oil of a car. Life experiences is 100% more valuable than only text book knowledge.

I have no fond memories of school days, it was stressful all the time, same with college, I dropped out after a year and decided to travel, that's when I found myself, that is where all my memories lie and where all my life decisions were influenced. I'm now 54 and have had a fantastic life, non conformist , living it my own way. I do have two sons in their mid 20's now, they did have the usual school experience, but they don't hold it in high regard either, they are out living their own lives now, traveling and experiencing the world. I think you have done a fantastic job as parents. If I had my younger days over, I would choose your lifestyle over anything traditional.

Love your family. Your kind of ‘not normal’ is my normal😂. I recon Finn is going to show up on AGT one day. Jack you are such a solid guy, the world will always be at your feet. Sweet Kate just wanna say as someone who’s lived all over the world for decades and moved often some of my besties live far far away. Don’t be afraid to foster strong bonds and keep them going thanks to modern technology. You already know what’s good. Love ja all! You’re great parents, what lucky kids!

Socially it's a crap shoot, they could be better or worse off there's just no telling. There is an opportunity cost in everything we do and the only tradeoff I can see as possibly missing out on is competing in sports. The hard work, sacrifice, teamwork, leadership and camaraderie that can all come from organized sports is a pretty big deal and it's not really something you can do later in life with the same impact it has on a young mind. Keith is such a dominant force in everything that happens on the boat that there may be a bit of lack of independence when it comes time to leave the nest but that said there is no doubt what these kids are doing in the long run is way better than "normal" US kids life.

school really isn't all that. And this is coming from someone who loves learning. The people are horrendous, its nothing like the films portray, and in terms of events like prom... well, i have mine next weekend and I'm not too excited about it. everyone says its awkward and boring, and all they want to do it go to an after party and get drunk... which is also something I'm not interested in. I'd much rather have spent my childhood sailing on a boat. The pandemic was a blessing for me because I could do my work in my own time, with none of the kids, spend time with my family and helped me start the healing from the anxiety and mental health issues school left me.

    Hey zatara!
I haven’t been around for a while, I’m so glad to see you guys are still sailing your own way through life !!
Normality….pffft …it’s overrated, I think the far greater crime would have been to not do it, it looks like Jack and Kate have already cottoned on to this, and I have no doubt that both you Renee and your awesome partner in crime Keith were on to this long before the public decided to weigh in.
So to all the naysayers I ask this, how have you lived a remarkable life?....what is normal and why is this better than the path less taken?
I could think of nothing more liberating than being away from all the “normal”

It’s so interesting to me as someone from the UK as to what you guys consider childhood milestones. Prom is sort of the same. But driving license being such a big deal is definitely not the same and homecoming I think is uniquely American.

If you receive any comment whatsoever saying what you have done is wrong, it's absolute BS, this is the BEST way to raise kids, and the future leaders of this world, with real life experience and mini adults who stand out from the crowd. Ma and Pa, you did better than good, you did them proud and us proud.. just look at them! You should be so proud!

It’s not really about missing school, you also miss out on having a friends group, underage drinking making life long experiences with people at that age, I 100% wouldn’t trade my teenage years for those years at sea.
I sailed for 9 months around indo, Maylasia, Thailand, Singapore when I was 25, but I did it with 9 mates. So different experience

We have a beautiful world and it's just too expensive and hard to see it all in a traditional way. What you are doing is AMAZING. Spending this quality time with family is sooo important. I fought Cancer this year. Just got back clean scans! Yay! But it was so hard not having my family around, (one chikd got a job out of state and another away at college, the third is home); trying to get support long distance. What you have is very special; I am jealous. Although, I would not be able to stay at sea; I would be too sick. But I'm with Finn on Van Life! That is my retirement dream! Curious about Anna. My son started UT Austin in 2020 in psychology too (now in Physics). But he was home Freshman year. Everything was online. Why did she choose to leave then? Lockdown on a boat would have been so much better and she could have done it online that year. My son went to campus Fall 2021. Curious about her choice of timing and what did she do during lockdown?

I find it interesting how, myself for example grew up having a ‘’normal’’ childhood and I would love to totally disconnect from the world and go live on a boat or a van somewhere far away, knowing that all those ‘’normal’’ kids activities that I got to experience , weren’t all that. In contrast to Finn, that feels like he missed out on things he will never get to experience in school and stuff. Everybody wants the thing they don’t have, and the ones that have it don’t even want it. I’m not saying it as a negative thing. It’s just the human nature, we sometimes get so used to the reality we live so we imagine another ideal life that we would want, outside from what we know. It’s normal to be curious about the unknown and the out of the ordinary. I just find it very interesting..(I’m sorry if my English is bad, it’s not my first language)

I also had what many call a non-traditional upbringing. I left home at 11 to live with a host family and tour the world with a professional Boy Choir. I'd live away from home and do my schooling out of a packet for 6 months at a time. I'd never trade it.
