- Jello Pudding Cake - Bringing Back A Classic Favorite
In this video I bring back a classic favorite (from the 60s or 70s) that is so good, that I can't believe it has practically disappeared online. Luckily, I found it in my mother's recipe box. Once you try this recipe you will wonder how you got along without it, especially in the summer heat.
Pudding Cake
Ingredients:
1 Stick Margarine 1 9.0z, Cool Whip
1 Cup Chopped Pecans 1 Cup. Powdered Sugar
1 Cup Flour 1 Pkg. (small) Vanilla Pudding (Instant)
1-8 oz Cream Cheese 1 Pkg. (small) Choc. Pudding
1 Hershey Bar 4 cups milk (use 3 cups for firmer pudding)
Mix the margarine, chopped pecans and flour and at into oblong, pan, Bake 20 min @ 350°. Cool.
Mix the cream cheese, 1 cup of the Cool Whip, and 1 cup powdered sugar and spread on crust.
Then Mix as on the package instructions the vanilla and chocolate pudding and spread over the
cream cheese mixture. Spread rest of the Cool Whip on top. Grate 1 Hershey bar on top.
Keep refrigerated and covered with plastic wrap.

Been making this for 35 years. All flavors are good. Pistachio, butterscotch, banana, and chocolate. I like to score the top into serving squares and put a single whole pecan on top, placing them on the square on a diagonal. Makes a pretty presentation.
I've been eating it for 45 years :) I love the idea of putting a whole pecan on top. I bet that looks great! Thanks for watching and sharing. Please subscribe and be part of our learning and sharing community.
My mother passed away and I thought this cake was lost upon seeing your video really made my day thank you!
I'm terribly sorry to hear about your mother, but I'm glad you found some comfort in this recipe. It is not easy to find online either. My mother made it for years and still does on occasion. It would be a shame for this one to fade out of existence.

Hey Jim, first time watching.
Your 'Jell-o Pudding Cake' is also known as 'Chocolate Lush'...
The origional recipe was
a 'Lemon Lush' with many variations...like chocolate, butterscotch, pumpkin, pistachio, vanilla, strawberry, etc.
The lady that made it online said that the recipe has been in her family for at least three generations.
When you make the cheesecake layer add some chocolate flavor.
I used Hershey's chocolate syrup,
about 1 tablespoon or to taste.🍫
It was for a birthday party and everyone really liked it. It was the first time that I made that flavor.🍫
I made the lemon one for Easter.🍋
I put fresh lemon juice in the cheesecake and some grated lemon rind, too. My husband
and the rest of our family
really liked it.🍋
Trying new recipes is fun!
I enjoyed watching your video.😊
Thanks, Jim.🍰🍫
Thanks for the info, the lemon variation sounds yummy.
@HelpatHomeJim
Lemon is really good.🍋
Our daughter ate some,
and she doesn't even like lemon.
I still want to try the other flavors.
We have a big family,
five kids, and three are married.
(Plus, five grandkids, so far.)😊
Strawberry 🍓 🍰 🍓 could be next...
with fresh strawberries on top.🍓
Ooh butterscotch
Also known as "chocolate" delight, or various other flavors..
My favorite is butterscotch. I am in Mississippi, we call this YUM YUM DESERT.
Jim I got 95% for doing this recipe in my home eco class
I love it! That's awesome! I bet not many people had ever had this one before. Sorry for the delayed response, it's hard to keep up with the comments since it doesn't give notifications to me.
Help at Home ok it is fin but a lot of my friends in my class loved it
I loved the recipe, I loved the way you presented it to us, with your brilliant sense of humour. Keep this going, I was having a bad day and you cheered me up. Thank you. Ruth
Good for you, great score!
Awesome!
"We'll just learn together" 😄 "Don't buy these" 😄 Thanks for the recipe and the laughs. I'm going to look up your other videos now. Appreciate ya!
Thank you so much for joining in.
The Original recipe is called Lemon Lush, use 2 packages of lemon pudding instead of chocolate and vanilla. The chocolate version has many names, but "6 Pie" (6 layers) is used more often. Also good with butterscotch, chocolate and heath bars crushed on top. Thank you for keeping this classic 70's recipe going! My family always has to make a chocolate(no vanilla) and a lemon for EVERY holiday and even make an eggnog flavored one with 2 cheesecake puddings, nutmeg and dash of cinnamon, a mix of half eggnog/half milk for the pudding mix, then a very light dusting of nutmeg on top for presentation... delicious!! They freeze wonderfully! Just chill in fridge between layers(per the norm), once final layer is on, return to fridge for a few hours to set, pre-cut the pieces before freezing. We serve frozen Lemon Lush and Eggnog Pie! Lemon Lush is phenomenal frozen during these hot Southern summers! Enjoy! (You can also use cans of pie filling instead of puddings, blueberry on top of lemon is delicious too garnish with fresh blueberries and very thinly sliced sugared lemon twists or grated zest).
Wow, such great information! You made ME hungry. Thanks for sharing and for watching. I appreciate you.
Yum!
I’ve been loving this for about fifty years
You and me both! Thanks for watching and I hope you check out my other videos. A new video will be coming out next week.
We called this "farm dessert" because my grandma who lived on our dairy farm made this with Pistaschio pudding instead, whooeeeee it's SO DARN GOOD!! Also written on a 50+ yr old recipe card in our family recipe box!
That's awesome!
Brazil Indiana 1979. GOD BLESS YOU
Thank you, and thanks for watching!
I love your sense of humor, truthfulness and great food
I make this dessert EVERY Thanksgiving and Christmas. My family loves it! You don’t need all the mixers. I mix everything by hand and it turns out perfect.
One holiday I didn’t make it. I thought I would try something different. I have a large family and most of them were so upset that this dessert wasn’t there. I make sure it’s there now.
This guys one of the only cooks i can watch for the entire video, I’m excited to try this out for my baby shower in a few months! I’ll update you on how everyone likes it!
This is great! Thanks for watching and for the kind words. Best of luck with the baby shower.
If you make it with chocolate pudding, you may want to add the final layer within about a half-hour of the time you plan to serve this dessert. The chocolate can sort of bleed or leech into the next layer, leaving a slightly discolored area, if it sits in the fridge too long when made in advance. If you don't mind that and are pressed for time with other things, prep away! God bless you and baby! 🥰
I have never laughed so hard during a recipe video. You are hilarious! I died when you threw those sucky cooling racks. And it looks delicious 😊
Me too!! I think I have played it for everyone I know, just for the fun. GREAT SENSE OF HUMOR!!!
i laughed too! 😂😂😂😂Puder prowder 😅
I mean, let's be real?! He's real! 😂😂😂❤
My husband would love this because we watch cooking shows and He says no one ever says yuck or that's not right or these gadgets are junk they just show the edited parts not the oh crap I dropped it on the floor kind of stuff.
❤
I agree with you about those crazy folding legs cooling racks.
So funny! I like how you just show life as it is and all the "bloopers" aren't edited out like other people do, makes for a much more entertaining video. Also my mom used to make this all the time and I too have been looking for the recipe online without much luck, so thank you so much for sharing!
Thanks for watching and I'm glad you enjoyed the video. I hear you, it is really difficult to find this one online.
I had a great time watching ole Jim…I hope to view your other videos…see you then
Thank You for the smile. I love the uncut, raw and unscripted video. It was so much fun to watch.
I appreciate the kind words. This is one of my earlier videos, so I hope I've improved a bit if you watch some of my later videos 🙂. Thank you for watching and have a great day!
This is my kind of recipe. Cream cheese and pudding with Cool whip. Nutty crust to start,
I am trying to give up some sugar in my diet but memorial day is coming. I can share with others. Thanks Jim this is a keeper.
Looks good. I laughed when you threw the spatula !! 🤣🤣
Moms are the best..
I found a recipe for grape jello, can of blueberries and a can of pineapple, cream cheese and sour cream.. in my mother’s cook book.. something she always made at thanksgiving or Christmas dinner.. it’s the bomb. Sure miss my mother.. And I’ll make this and eat the whole thing sometimes..
My Mom has that same recipe. She called it blueberry salad.
Please give us the recipe
Yes, I sure miss my mama and my Grannie's too!!! That recipe you mentioned sounds quiet Heavenly.I am 73 and Desert's have really changed. Mama and our Granny's did most everything by scratch!!
Growing up in the 60s and 70s pudding cake was something very different. We called this chocolate lush.
My aunt called this Mississippi Mud Pie. She'd make it just the same way as you did, but she'd top it with the same chopped pecans that are part of the pie crust and then maraschino cherries, evenly spaced.
Boy Jim I laughed at you when the mixer started spitting out the mix a little because I've been there but you were so cute about it. You remind me of my husband's messes. But as far as baking and making anything for a dessert, you can forget it. I have to say, I so much loved your veido. Thank you for the hardy good laugh, I needed that❤️❤️❤️😘😘😘
I try to keep learning fun, though that was an accident. Thanks for watching and please subscribe.
I make this all the time!! ❤ I learned how to make it back in the day in home ec class. I also switch up the flavours too, like strawberry or caramel. I find it easier if you put each layer in the fridge for a bit, it’s easier to add the next layer. 😊.
OMG!
We make ‘Cherry Crunch’ every Christmas! We put cherry pie filling onto of the cream cheese layer. How funny that we ALL have a variation of this recipe in our family recipe books.
Absolutely tons of variations. We have one like yours called Cherry Dessert. You can check out that video if you want. Thanks for watching!
We call this a "Dream Pie", have made it for years and years. No vanilla pudding, all chocolate, dark preferably. Chopped pecans sprinkled on top, no chocolate bar. Delicious, always a star! 😊
Out nane was Chocolate Delite.. No vanilla pudding. Just chocolate.
Thanks for the Memories I’m 74, good to see this oldie but goodie again🌹
Hi Jim, I recently came across this in my mom's recipe box, where she called it "The Next Best Thing to Robert Redford". Lo and behold it's on the net under that title, brought back many memories. You recipe is a close match!
A close version but it's called "better than sex cake", using the mini chocolate chips. Yum, is delicious! 😳
Whata darling
6/6/2023 Jim, I truly enjoyed your presentation. You made it easy to watch with your funny antics and self appreciation of making mistakes and learning along the way. I absolutely going to make this. Thanks 🙏
I appreciate your kind words. Thank you for watching, and please subscribe to be part of our learning and sharing community. BTW, that video is five years old. I've improved since then, but still keep learning fun.
Darlin', I've been making this pudding treat for over 45 years. BUT, I learned to do it with pistachio pudding. Pretty much the same steps, same ingredients and measurements, except pistachio instead of chocolate. Down to the chocolate shavings on top. Lately I've been using different flavors of instant pudding. They're all so good! Yum! I'll bet a lemon one will be cool and refreshing this summer. Maybe some sugared thin lemon peel strips on top. Hmm, have to try that. 🤔
That's great to hear. There are so many variations that I've often wondered what the original recipe was really called. I've never tried the pistachio, but that and the lemon sound great! Thank you for sharing and for watching.
My brother's girlfriend used to do the pistachio pudding and add sliced bananas between the cream cheese and pudding layers. SO good!!
@@tammycampbell112 That sounds great, I haven't tried that one before. Thanks for sharing!
@@HelpatHomeJim YW!
My Mom made this dessert, she called it, "Miss B's Puddin".... We loved it!! Thanks for sharing!!
This is also known as the Robert Redford dessert. The chocolate and vanilla pudding are mixed separately and done in layers rather than mixing together. 😊
Wow, that's an interesting bit of trivia. Thank you for sharing. Have a great day.
we used to call the Next best thing to Robert Redford dessert.
@@punchylarue4619 I heard something like that before. Thanks for watching!
In the 80s, we called it Ice cream cake. Why, I don't know. But it's delicious no matter what you call it. Really good with an Oreo crust.
@@tammycampbell112 Yes, I heard that about the Oreo crust. By the way if you like Oreo crusts, you might check out my Halloween Dirt Cake. Thanks for watching!
We used to have it at church dinners years ago and the lady who made it called it chocolate lush. Is was so delicious!
Hello. My mom makes this all the time...three different varieties - the classic chocolate and vanilla one, also lemon, and finally the pistachio version. She’s had the recipe for decades (since at least the 70s), and it’s pretty much what she considers her ‘signature’ dessert because nobody else in her very large family of brothers and sisters makes it. We just call it ‘The Jello Fridge Dessert’ because we don’t really think of it as cake. More like pudding and whipped cream bars.
And how good it is :) Thanks for watching.
I know its been a year since you commented, but if you have the lemon version that you mentioned above, I'd love to give it a try and then make a video. I'd be sure to give you credit. My email is helpathomejim@gmail.com Thank you!
The lemon and pistachio combo was awesome!!
I love it with butterscotch pudding!
@@HelpatHomeJimAs far
as I recall, the only change is to swap in Lemon Instant Pudding in place of the Chocolate or Vanilla or Butterscotch, or what have you. You could probably tweak the crust with the zest of a lemon if you wanted, too. Easy peasy.
It is so refreshing to see you not worrying about making a mess, most people spend more time keeping messes to a minimum and i want to scream
Hi Jim! My family put a cook book together in the early 1990’s, and I have it there. It was called “Southern Spectacular Dessert.” You can also make it with pistachio or butterscotch pudding-but you probably knew that already. I like chocolate, and you’re right about letting the pudding chill for a few minutes to set up before adding the top layer of cool whip. Thanks for the video! I’m glad I found your channel! ❤🍫
Thanks for sharing and for watching. Have a great day!
This recipe is everywhere. It's just under different names.
Pudder powting, I love it. Now I’m hungry for this. Great video.
I know. Just keeping the real me in there. Ha!
I loved that.
I bet this will be sooo good with a layer of marshmallow fluff like a s’mores pudding cake 🤗
That is a neat suggestion. I've never had a s'mores pudding cake either. Thanks for watching and thanks for the tip.
I have my moms Jello cookbook from 1974. SO many great recipes.
WoW! What a treasure.
I've been making this for years. My family loves it. This past Easter, my son made it, so it is passed down officially now.😊
I probably will never make this but watched the whole video because you are a character! 😅
I am a character, but I'm improved since this five year old video 🙂 . Why wouldn't you make this? If you're super healthy, you can have a treat once in a while. If you think you can't do it, just take your phone or tablet into the kitchen and make it with me watching the video. Thanks for watching and I hope you'll subscribe and be part of our learning and sharing community.
This recipe has been around a long time, but we always called it “the next best thing to Robert Redford.” We always cooled each layer before adding the next. We also sprinkled chopped nuts on top (we used to use walnuts, even for the crust). This was always a family favorite. I’ve always thought a layer of chocolate pudding and a separate layer of pistachio pudding sounds good, but I have never made it.
Thanks for sharing. A lot of people have shared that the pistachio is fantastic. I haven't tried it yet. Have a good day!
I have been making this recipe for years. But I use pistachio pudding it’s the best! If you haven’t tried it you’re in for a treat. I use pecan meal to sprinkle on top of the pistachio and in the crust.
Hi Jim! I'm a chef and I have to say that I love your style of cooking! LoL You're teaching that cooking not only is fun but there's definitely going to be mistakes that can and should be laughed at! Have a wonderful week!
Thanks for the kind words. This video is five years old. I still keep learning fun, but I've improved since then. Have a great day!
I just found you today (5/2023), & OMG! You. Are. ADORABLE!!!
I have never enjoyed an instructional fecipe video more in my life!

This video was a hoot!😄Dream Whip makes the fluffiest pies! Just whip it up, then add your favorite flavor of pudding mix. For the crust, I just use the pre-made grahm cracker crust or chocolate crust. SO FLUFFY!
We use Dream Whip in another family favorite called Cherry Dessert. I made a video on that already if you're interested.
We always called it Robert Redford. I love that desert

Hi Jim. I live in Hawaii . I've been making a form of this dessert since high school. I learned a recipe not exactly the same , but very close to it. I use walnuts instead of pecans. And on top I sprinkle more walnuts. Family and friends love this dessert. Thanks for sharing so other people can make it to.
Thank you for watching. I bet walnuts are great!
Oh this is the best suprise, I'm 81, lived in South Dakota on a farm. Our church ladies put together a recipe book (70's or 60's) I found that exact recipe. Put it together, was the most delicious dessert I've ever made. I'm going to make for my grandkids, great k. That was so awesome your my dessert guy!! 👍😂
I lost this recipe several years ago and hadn’t been able to find it anywhere. Thank you. I used to make it with pistachio pudding and it was awesome.
This sounds like “Next Best Thing to Robert Redford” dessert. Yum
We put the vanilla and chocolate pudding on separate layers (cut the milk down a bit so it was thicker-I seem to remember adding cook whip to the pudding also), topped the same way and called it Mud Slide Pie.
HI JIM, 20 YEARS AGO I HAD A FRIEND WHO MADE THIS AND CALLED IT BLACK BOTTOM PIE. SHE DID IT FOR EVERY POT LUCK AND PEOPLE LOVED IT.
I AM RAISING MY TWO AUTISTIC GRANDDAUGHTERS AND THEY LOVE TO COOK. THEY WILL LOVE THIS. I WILL LET YOU KNOW HOW THEY DO.

It's called "Next Best Thing To Robert Redford Pie" or "Better Than Sex Pie". I love this recipe and I've had this in my files since I was a teenager. I'm in my 60's now. We also called it "Next Best Thing To Raquel Welch Pie", but I don't think it's listed that way on the internet. Thanks for posting it. I love this dessert!!!!
Thanks for the information. I never knew that, I just knew it was something my mother always made and we loved it. Thanks for watching.
My family has always called this dessert “torte”
Oh I know this one, we called it "sex in a pan"
@@tracycameron2580😂😂😂😂 sex in a pan sounds horrible & hilarious all at the same time…😂😂
We used to make that all the time, back in the 1970's. My second favorite, after the chocolate one you made, was the lemon one .... we called that one Lemon Lush.
This looks so good. I will definitely make this for my husband’s family who are chocolateholics. I make a cousin of this dessert that disappears so fast I have to make two at a time. I uses vanilla wafers and chocolate pudding in layers then top with homemade whipped cream after the pudding sets up. I’m not a chocolate fan, grew up in the vanilla flavoring business, but even I can’t resist it.
Wow, your recipe sounds great! I'll have to try that with my family. P.S. The extra bit of sugar I mention putting in the crust, can be be left out. This is already so rich. I was just testing variations.

Pro tip: cream cream cheese before adding powdered sugar and it will incorporate better. I loved this vid! I needed a laugh today.
Thanks for watching. I'm so glad you liked the video.
Since the early 80’s I’ve always made this .
I am 75 and have been making it for 40 years……it is wonderful hot weather dessert and everyone will think you spent hours on it. You can also make it with sugar free pudding, sugar free Cool Whip, lower fat Neufchâtel cream cheese….I like to toast the nuts for the crust. I also use hard WHITE whole wheat flour…..now I grind my own wheat but you can buy hard WHITE wheat flour at the store…Gold Medal or King Arthur. I also like to use sliced, toasted almonds in the crust and then sprinkle toasted sliced almonds with the grated Hershey bar on top…or make some beautiful chocolate curls for the top. Be sure not to use any Nestle products…I have been boycotting them since the 1970’s. Just do a “Nestles Crimes” search on UA-cam…they are NOT a nice, caring, upstanding company…at all. So glad you found and shared this recipe from your mother’s book….YUM!
I grind my own grain as well. It is such a comfort to have wholesome vitamin etc. rich flour. Thanks for sharing.
I'm so glad I happened across this recipe. I needed some ideas for our daylily club meeting this Sunday and 13x9 size is perfect. Thank you for such easy instructions! I enjoyed your personality too! 😊

Hi Jim, this for my family is called “ Betty’s Dessert” I just made it a couple weeks ago as it’s my fav. Dessert. What I don’t get is my crust this last time baking the crust for only 15 minutes, it was almost too crunchy. (But delicious). I always use 2- 8 oz. Of the 1/3 rd fat cream cheese with mine as I love love cream cheese. Now I’m going to have to make it again. Lol
This is my first time watching you. I like watching you with the no edits. I love your sense of humor too.
Thanks for the kind words and for watching.
This reminds me of a dessert I used to make called 'Mississippi Mud'. I think I made a graham crumb crust, so it was a no bake.(OR, I'd make a brownie base) I never use cool whip (I don't like the ingredients) - used handmade whipped cream instead. So my only 'cheat' ingredient was chocolate pudding mix. I'd serve it frozen, which was great for summer birthdays
Sounds yummy, there are lots of ways to get at recipes sometimes. Thanks for watching.
We called this " Mississippi mud" too. I've made it with a Graham craker crust or the one with walnuts. I also make it with whipping cream it's not as sweet. This is a great cake, though.
@@irenez7439 Sounds like ours are twins 😊 I'd make a homemade brownie base, smooth the top (sometimes I'd pipe roses) & pipe Happy Birthday for special occasions.
Yup, that was the same name in my old church recipes book.🤣
I'm so happy you made this dessert. I made this like 25 years ago and loved it so much. I have thought about it many times over the years but could not remember how to make it. I will be making it in the near future. Thank you. Love from Texas ❤
