Beautiful! I played this in a recital accompanied by my cello teacher waaaaaay back in 1970. I'm back scratching the strings after a 50 year absence. YOUR playing helps me understand how this piece should sound. Okay . . . back to practice! :)

This was my audition piece for the top orchestra at my high school last year and I listened to this all the time to learn it! Hearing everything played nicely helped so much. I did make it through my audition 😁 now I am helping more kids learn this piece, even though it is slightly different starting at the triplet section. I will forever use this channel as a wonderful learning tool ❤

    • @Cellopedia
      @Cellopedia  Рік тому +11

Absolutely, intonation can be tricky in this piece! A good strategy is to practice slowly, section by section. By the way, if you're interested in a detailed guide, there is a dedicated online course for this sonata on Udemy. It includes various techniques and tips to nail the intonation. Keep practicing and you'll definitely improve www.udemy.com/course/best-music-for-cello-student-sonata-by-j-b-breval/?couponCode=CELLOFOREVER

Your playing is amazing - how were you able to get such good tone? I'm learning this piece right now and the two main problems I have is hitting adjacent strings, in the parts with a lot of crossing, and intonation. My primary issue is touching adjacent strings however. Any tips?

Thank you for your kind words! Achieving a good tone on your instrument largely depends on technique and practice. For avoiding hitting adjacent strings, focus on the bow's angle and placement. Ensure it's neither too close to the fingerboard nor the bridge. Practice controlled, slow bow movements, emphasizing smooth transitions between strings. A relaxed yet firm bow grip is essential, with movements originating from the elbow and shoulder, not just the wrist. Incorporate specific exercises that focus on string crossing to enhance precision. For improving intonation, ear training is crucial. Practice challenging sections slowly to ensure accurate finger placement. Initially, fingerboard tapes can be used as guides, but aim to phase them out as your skill advances. Consistency in practice will gradually enhance both your tone and precision. 🎻🎶

@@Cellopedia Thank you for the advice! I still need to practice the string crossing bits but for the triplets I can add some ritardando in for effect and to make it a little easier. All that remains is getting the tuning better as it's very off currently.

Hello and thank you for your very interesting tutorials.
I have to learn this sonata for my exam in June. Do you think I can use the "Pomorodo" method while working:
    - 1. the major DO and SOL scales
    - 2. then working on pushing/pulling
-3. the work of the rhythm which changes often in order to memorize these specificities well?
-4. Finally, work the whole piece slowly then faster, but in allegro it's still too fast for me?
    What do you think ?

Hello! Thank you for reaching out and for your kind words about Cellopedia tutorials. Preparing for an exam with a piece like the Breval Sonata in C Major can indeed be a challenging but rewarding experience. The Pomodoro Technique, with its focus on short, focused bursts of study followed by brief breaks, can be very effective for musical practice, especially when tackling various aspects of a challenging piece. Your plan to break down your practice sessions into focused segments on scales, bowing techniques (pushing/pulling), rhythm work, and incremental tempo increases for the entire piece is a strategic approach.
Scales in C Major and G Major: These are fundamental to understanding the key structure of the Sonata and will aid in intonation and fingerboard navigation.
Pushing/Pulling: Focusing on bow control and dynamics will enhance your expressiveness and tone quality.
Rhythm Work: Given the rhythmic changes in the Sonata, dedicating time to rhythm will solidify your understanding and execution of the piece’s nuances.
Slow to Fast Practice: Starting slowly and gradually increasing the tempo is the best way to ensure accuracy and musicality. If the allegro is still too fast, continue working at a manageable tempo, gradually increasing as your comfort and capability improve.
Incorporating the Pomodoro Technique into these areas of focus will help maintain your concentration and energy, making your practice sessions more productive. Additionally, remember to use Cellopedia's resources, like the step-by-step tutorial for the Breval Sonata in C Major, to supplement your practice.
