  • Structure determination of macromolecules is undoubtedly a complex process, with multiple decision making points along every step. Although many of these have gone through extensive automation over the last decade, almost entirely removing the need for human intervention in straight-forward or precedented cases, decisions still need to be made when automated solutions prove insufficient.
In the fast-paced environment of industrial structural biology, where impact on the wider project’s progression is time-limited, efficiency and productivity are paramount. This led to industrial groups to adopt automation solutions and laboratory databases quite early. While working practices and levels of automation are no longer substantially different between industrial and academic labs, it is worth examining what drives decision making in industrial structural biology groups. This talk will lead the audience through the structure determination process from initial protein construct design, through data collection, structure solution and dissemination of structural information, while focussing on aspects that drive efficiency.
