Magic Decanter wine aerator review - make your wine taste better

  • I was bought a Father's day present and thought it might be interesting for any wine drinkers to find out if it works.
It's a little gadget called the 'Magic Decanter'. Its stated purpose is to make wine taste better, without the need to let it 'breathe', before drinking.
I had no idea what to expect when testing it, but in the (very unscientific) test I carried out, it seemed to make a big difference to the taste of the wine. I'm not expert, as I say in the video. I don't even drink wine all that often, but for those who do, it might be nice to know that you can improve the taste really easily.
The only website I could find that seemed to have information about this product was www.magicdecanter.co.uk
I know it's also available in the US, or at least something that looks identical, because I've seen them over there.
Does it make all wines taste better, in all circumstances? I don't know. I only tested it on a small amount of wine, as shown in the video. As I use it over the coming months, I'll update any differences in my findings in this description.
If you have any questions, please leave a comment. If you have any suggestions or requests for just let me know and I'll see what I can do.
The video was shot and produced using the following:
    Sony DSC-HX30v, shooting at 1080 50p
downsized in Adobe Premiere Pro CS 5.5 to 720p
    HP P6320 UK desktop computer
    Intel i5 processor @ 3.20 ghz
Windows 7 64 bit Home Premium
    Windows experience index rating 5.1
Voiceover in the very final segment was created with Adobe Audition using the Microsoft LX-3000 Lifechat headset. A review of that headset will be uploaded shortly.

Great video. I was as confused about the filter and lack of instruction with the gift I received. Thanks for including a sense of normality with the added screen text. I am sure the perfectionist do-gooders will always be there to criticise but I think it's great. Have a happy new year :) Cheers *hic!

This looks brilliant for my dad as he quite likes a glass of red wine with his tea on a sunday, might think about getting him one as a gift!

Trusting you. I'm sold. Enjoy my Merlot occasionally. Was looking at One Day Only deals and wasn't even sure what it did. Now I'm buying one. :)

I don't drink very often, but I have to say it made a big difference to the taste! It's a clever little thing.

I've moved since then. It's smaller now, but come the summer it should look nice!

I'm not a big wine drinker, but I just got a wine preserver which works really well. I'll be doing a review of that soon too. Saves me wasting a lot of wine if I open a bottle!

It genuinely made the wine taste better. I don't think it makes a poor wine good, but it seems like it can make a nice wine better. I'm sure he'll be delighted if you get him something like that - I was when my kids surprised me with it.

I've been doing a bit of digging around and I noticed that the Vinturi company do a spirits one as well as a red and white wine models. I've shortlisted the Vinturi @ £40, the WineWeaver @ £20 (highly rated) and the Magic Decanter reviewed here (price not disclosed so as not to spoil any surprise!). Your review was what has added a third to my list. They all beat blowing through the wine with a straw (!) but I think I'll wait until after Christmas just in case one of my daughters thinks of it.

It's quite surprising (well maybe not that surprising) that there are so many different models to choose from.
It must be quite a niche marketplace, but then again, I suppose there are a lot of drinkers in the world.

I've never drunk Bourbon and have no idea whether it needs aeration. I think the reason it works with wine is that there are things called volatile esters that interact with oxygen to change the chemical structure slightly.
Whether Bourbon reacts the same way, dunno really. I very much doubt that it will.

They weren't even my cats! Every time I used to try to make a video, someone or something would start making noise. If it wasn't the cats next door, it was my dogs, if not the dogs it was a van outside.
And if nothing else made noise, my kids decided they had to talk to me urgently at the very second I hit *record*!

I just got one as a Christmas gift.
Sometimes in the Tropic, we drink red wine a little chilled. No good ! We should decant the red wine at room temperature. Is this correct ?

    • @mygoodstuffreviewed
      @mygoodstuffreviewed  10 років тому

I think you should drink wine however you prefer it. Personally, I like red wine a little warm, not chilled, but chilled is nice too.
I think the "rules" about wine are good guidelines, but no more than that. If you like it, drink it that way.

In the Tropic, generally, we always like to drink a lot of things cold !
      Cheers !

+Judex Young As a professional my advice is this: Depends on wine type, what you consider room temperature, and like the gentleman before me pointed out your personal taste. There is not an obligatory rule in this but usually the "heavier", the older, and the more complex the wine is the warmer is the temperature at which it should be served. But as long as you stick in the 12ºC to 18ºC range and you are not having a "wine perfectionist" for a guest you don´t need to worry too much about it.
Tip: In case of doubt is better to serve the wine slightly colder than slightly warmer in regards to the optimum serving temperature because the "room temperature" tends to warm the wine during the period in which it is consumed.
      Cheers.

      deck444 Thank you.
Depending on the weather, I often drink red wines colder. When I play my violins and viola, I drink it warmer for the mood. When I drink the wines colder, it is for relaxing, I mean being lazy !
We are blessed with imported South African wines, French wines, and even wines from some other countries. Though the wines have to travel, I do not feel the difference as I am not really an expert.
I have been looking for a white wine from France with the bouquet "Roses et Pivoines" from "Les trois Maitres". I cannot find it any more ! I have a Friend who likes it very much. I, too, enjoy it ! If I remember well, it is a Gewurztraminer.
      Thanks again and Cheers !

Gewurztraminers from Alsace (France) are awesome wines, very intriguing on the nose. I like to pair them with exotic foods like chicken curry. Serve those at fridge temperature. I am happy that I could help you, if you ever have more questions feel free to ask me. It´s always great to contact with wine lovers around the globe. Cheers.

hhahaha, yes I know what you mean. It's great for someone who's impatient. I like Rioja and the difference in taste when you allow it to breathe for an hour is amazing.
This little device saves you the wait. Nice if you have guests turn up unexpectedly.

A most tedious video.Practice first before filming, & get to know the product ahead of any review. The on screen comments wouldn't have been needed then. Cheers..&Happy New Year
