- DHASA TOWN GONGTHA TA CHIM CHIM.
"Hello, I'm Tashi Gyatso, but in the artist world, I'm known as GTashi. I was born in Mundgod settlement and moved to Dharamsala at the age of three, where I grew up. My schooling at Lower TCV was supported by my parents, who worked there. Looking back, I wasn't much into studying, but I absolutely loved the music classes. I vividly recall those drum lessons on stones with sticks taught by Gen Topgyal Lak. That sparked my interest in instruments like the dranyen (Tibetan guitar) and lingpu (flute). The mischievous moments in school and my passion for music are the things that stick out in my memory.
"My passion for music ignited around seventh or eighth grade, but at that time, my career options in music seemed limited to becoming a music teacher or joining TIPA. College didn't offer music as a subject, but my interest in music production and sound design grew. My brother returning with a guitar and an original song from college fascinated me and increased my knowledge of music. Though self-learning through UA-cam had its limits, applying to Empowering the Vision to learn more was a game-changer. This opportunity elevated my self-respect and gave me hope that I could stand on my own. My genre is MUSIC; I don't adhere to a specific style.
"In our community, witnessing artists strive despite struggles motivates me to improve. Self-doubt is the biggest hurdle in music production, but my incredible support system-my parents, brother, family, and friends-keeps me going. One of the happiest moments was overhearing my dad humming my song lyrics; that unexpected validation brought unparalleled joy.
"Music, for me, is about reflecting your essence. Crafting songs based on life experiences creates genuine, quality music. I've produced around 25 songs, releasing 10-15 to the public. Currently, Kush and I are working on an EP featuring four songs. I'm also keen on forming bands for street busking, live performances, and albums.
"'D.Town' was born with Kush, Tenwoe, and me, starting from the music and chorus of 'Dhasa Town gongtha ta chim chim.' What started as an impromptu music video later became an official one, owing to positive reactions. 'No Escape' is my personal favorite; it resonates deeply, depicting the struggles during the pandemic.
"Creating brings immense happiness and fulfillment. Staying true to your essence and creating raw art is vital. Our community supports artists remarkably well, and I hope this encouragement continues for all hardworking artists."

I think our culture and society is too regressive in a way to actually see the art these young gen artist has to offer.. It could take a decade for us to bring in that hip hop or the modern shift.. So that we would one day respect the works and struggle of these beautiful tibetan artists. I c the need for society to accept and appreciate our own artist like the rest of the world. Our culture is fucking regressive to begin with. Yadadamean?
