Ambeth Ocampo is a public historian whose research covers the late nineteenth-century Philippines: its art, culture, and the heroes who figure in the birth of the nation. He writes a widely read Editorial Page column for the Philippine Daily Inquirer and moderates a growing Facebook Fan Page. Ocampo is a Professor and former Chairperson of the Department of History, School of Social Sciences in the Ateneo de Manila University

For the longest time, it has always been my dream to attend one of your lectures sir, and at finally, in a way, I did it. I don’t even want it to end. I’ve been reading about Rizal since highschool but listening to stuffs I don’tknow about him makes me more interested. I always want to become a historian like Sir Ambeth and I hope I’m not late to do it.

Thank you, Prof. Ambeth Ocampo, for this wonderful lecture. Indeed, Rizal's life is absolutely interesting and the best way we can further our knowledge on him is to read Dr. Jose Rizal himself. We should always remember that He is a Human aside from being our national hero.
Thank you very much, Sir Ambeth, for this great reminder. Many people are familiar with Rizal but only some are able to recognize him genuinely. Also, Rizal was once a human too, who lived, loved, and left a legacy that we must acknowledge and appreciate. As a Filipino who enjoys the fruit of his sacrifices, it is just indeed right to at least keep his existence known in the present (and up to the future) by reading and understanding his works.
Thank you Prof. Ambeth! I hope other national heroes will be studied like this. They are, after all, humans like us.

Thank you Prof. Ambeth! I agree that the best way to know Rizal is to read him. It is also true that he had so many books written but only the scholars are interested to read it. The overall message of this video was delivered clearly and effectively. Rizal is indeed a human after all but as we see him as our national hero, we also see him as something invincible and cold. I wish people could see photos of Rizal showing other emotions to point out that he is a human like us. That he could be lame, weak, etc.

Thank you, Sir Ocampo! It's important to remember that heroes are also people. Rizal is still a normal person, despite the fact that he is always depicted as serious and formal in textbooks. I believe this should be discussed in school as well. It would also be beneficial if we study his works and take time to reflect on his words.
Thank you Professor Ambeth! This lecture enlightened me about the "authenticity" of Rizal since more people are doubting his existence. Every bits and pieces of himself embedded on his works prove that he is real and lived just like us. If we will only read, analyze, and understand all of his works, we can be sure that Rizal lived a great life while loving our country more than anything else. After all, he is just a human just like us.
Very well made lecture, sir Ambeth. I appreciate how you portrayed Jose Rizal as a normal human being similar to all of us, rather than just a national hero in our country. Oh my gosh, I just came across this video. I have your book and I thoroughly enjoyed it! Actually, your books (Mabini’s Ghost, Luna’s Mustache, Bonifacio’s Bolo, Aguinaldo’s Breakfadt) have made me interested in Philippine History because you showed our heroes in a different light- you humanized them. Your research gave us trivia we don’t usually read in history books at school.

Thank you. It inspires me to read Dr. Jose Rizal’s writings. And I will read Prof. Ambeth’s books on Rizal. My only criticism is the use of the words “holy relic”. The thumb print is indeed a relic of our national hero but it is not holy.
Thank you for this informative discussion. We know that Rizal is an epitome of excellence, talents, and a man who had so much love for the country. We just only know him as our national hero, a man who fought for our country, and a person who's always serious in photograph. But the question is, do we really know him as an ordinary person? Moreover, this video really enlightened me more about Rizal's existence. Because we can learn more through reading about his life experiences rather than his achievements. Just like what Sir Ocampo said, “learning is a journey and not a destination.” Therefore, I learned that it is more important to know about Rizal as an ordinary Filipino man.

Our RPH Professor referred us here and to be honest, I was not aware or I didn't know Rizal has these kinds of attributes haha.
I just find it interesting to know that after so many years that I've been away from the Philippines the country is still struggling to make its people read or at least be interested to learn beyond what their corrupt politicians are telling them. It's ironic how Maria Ressa described the Philippines as having a great share of its population fully committed in every form of social media platforms now available while there are still idiots clamoring for the Marcos Kleptocracy to come back. If Filipinos are seriously thinking about not repeating history that will surely doom them to failure, this video should have at least 50,000,000 views by now. They will spend 2 hours watching Vice Ganda every day, but 22 minutes of learning more about Jose Rizal is just too much for their brains to comprehend. So now they want Bongbong Marcos as their President. I can feel you pain, Dear Professor.

Can’t blame the people for not reading Rizal:
1. He wrote in Spanish. Historians doesn’t translate and publish his works into English or Filipino to reach more readers.
2. There is not enough “good” books on Rizal in our bookstores.
3. Books on Rizal’s life, works and writings are very limited. There is not enough Rizal scholars and biographers.

To preface, I'm speaking purely based on my opinion. I think the problem is not knowing the answer for "why the need to study or read about Rizal (or the works of him)?". Maybe I'm not that paying attention in my high school, Rizal books was only presented to us as a prerequisite to a subject, as a means to pass a quiz or a homework, for a presentation on "Linggo ng Wika" or "Araw ng mga Bayani". Maybe there were some nationalistic undertones explained here and there on our class while we read it. But to me, it is not palatable to the point that it was so boring. Because our teacher didn't present it in a way that we must care, that we must contemplate what he did, that we need to cherish and ponder what struggles they've triumphed and failed in the face of adversities of Spanish colonial times. Our teacher care more about the just the dates, and factoids while having a hollow understanding of the motivations that Rizal went through as a catalyst for the Philippine independence. We saw it as a distant past that, I as a student couldn't care less because I can't relate.
EDIT: if this is how my teacher presented it way back then, maybe I was more keen on listening and caring about the life and works of Rizal. Thanks Prof. Ambeth.

I never listen properly with my Rizal subject back in college... if this was how José Rizal was thought I might probably listen attentively. because the books were too perfect and boring...

If Im not mistaken, Rizal's wishes upon his death were not folowed because his letter was turned over to the RP govt by Spain already in the 1950s.
Instead of just putting english subtitles, how about speaking in national dialect or national language? Who's the main audience here, isn't that the Filipinos should be the main audience of this videos? 😂
