    Brilliantly done.
    I can honestly say this was better than some of the speeches given in the speech communication class I took last year (you were clear, to the point, didn't slur any words... very nice).
    And great description of the drive and how it works. I just started playing this game and more or less figured out (the hard way) how to build a drive like this (although mine was much more simple and only used one gravity generator and one mass block).
    Anyway, keep up the good work. It's great to see a tutorial here on youtube that (finally) makes sense.

    A Mass Driver (correct term) is not the same as a Jump Drive.
    A Mass Driver flings (usually through electromagnetism) 'stuff' at very high speed.
    A Jump Drive folds space around an object to move it in relation to that space.
    I only clicked this link to tell you that, because in SE there are several propulsion methods and it's confusing to new players when people mess up the terminology. I know this is an old video, but you still got it wrong even though there weren't jump drives in the game yet.
    In SE:
    Impulse - Basic Thrusters.
    Gravity Drive - Uses directional Gravity Generators and Artificial Mass Blocks on the object that needs to be accelerated itself.
    Mass Driver - Uses directional Gravity Generators on a seperate structure and Artificial Mass Blocks on the object that needs to be accelerated.
    Jump Drive - Object and anything attached to it is semi-instantly 'teleported' to either a specific GPS coordinate or a set distance in a random direction. Uses Jump Drive blocks.

    You have a future in tutorials for aspiring Space Engineers. Good Work!
    Also, I found a issue with the Mass Drive; if you screw up the mounting and either have a asteroid penetrate, or someone gets a rocket into it, the Mass Drive has the potential to literally punch its way through your ship like a armor piercing bullet; had that happen where I stupidly did individual mass drive "Modules" that were't exactly mounted in sturdily, and then upon testing, having NOT noticed that I'd had a meteor hit the drive pod, turned it on and then started spinning wildly everywhere as the "Drive Module" proceeded to start thrusting forwards.
    Stupid design flaw I know. It does make me wonder if Space Engineers will ever have "Load Bearing" simulations so that if you make a large ship, you have to have load bearing pieces of the ships skeleton, or have the drive units either tear off or thrust inside the ship. If so, having a Mass Drive will involve a LOT of trial and error to make sure it doesn't come loose like a turbine blade in a jet engine and start making a hash of your internals!

    Video is interesting and useful despite the mistitling. Presumably some people call this a "mass drive" because you have to use artificial "mass" blocks, since normal ship blocks aren't affected by gravity...
    And here with your SF trivia for the day is...!
    This kind of drive system is properly called a "gravity drive" and is a type of reactionless thruster.

  • @adamwallis1353
    @adamwallis1353 10 років тому +2

    You say you have to put the masses "below" the generators, but that's not true. Anywhere in the grav field and they work fine.
    You also say, adjust the fields to cover your ship, which again is unnecessary, they only need to cover the masses.
    As such, when I build one of these I tend to build a cube out of alternating layers of mass and gens (masses at corners to support the next "floor"), and adjust the fields so they just about overlap every mass. This way I don't get crazy grav fields in "user" sections of the ship.
    Surround it in glass and it also looks pretty badass

    • @Morphologis
      @Morphologis  10 років тому

      I never said it wouldn't work to place it anywhere on the ship, but I did say that if your ship isn't balanced, it will start listing. Artificial mass placed off axis will cause it to list if it isn't counter-balanced, try it out for yourself.

    • @adamwallis1353
      @adamwallis1353 10 років тому

      Morphologis
      Well, that happens if -any- mass is off balance. So like if you put your artificial masses in direct line with your generators, and yet your ship isn't symmetrical, you'll have issues with listing. Unless ofc you balance the list with mass (doesn't have to be artificial mass).
      Also I meant more like you say specifically -below-. And my point is that above is also fine, meaning you can make sandwiches. And to the side is also fine, if balanced the other side. Hence my cubic drives.
      P.S. I'm not having a go, your guides are awesome generally. Just pointing out some findings I've been getting whilst making grav drives =}

  • @parkerr3244

    I usually just build my ships so the front of the ship from the outside is the bottom of the ship inside, and then I just toss in an artificial mass block or two and use that for long-range travel. much simpler than building specific gravity generators for travel.

    Took me 30 minutes to makes it, 10 minutes to actually build the drive and 20 minutes of screwing around with it.
    built one on my Rogue ship, the thing is 20.000.000 in mass, and with 12 grav gens and 12 mass blocks it enoughj to move him at 105m/s in just 20 secs, while before it took me 2m30 sec to get to 75m/s, quite the improvement really.
    go check my ship on the workshop, the thing is named CTC The Goliath

    The only thing I don't get is why you're adding more than one Gravity Generator - If a single one covers the entire "engine" (i.e. mass blocks) wouldn't that suffice? It's not like the gravgens stack G's on top of each other?

  • @JolanXBL

    • @Morphologis
      @Morphologis  10 років тому +1

      Yes, but we're talking about science fiction artificial mass and gravity generators. Grav gens don't recognize ship mass when applying force, they only exert force on artificial mass blocks at the moment. However, the ship's mass is taken into account when calculating the force required to overcome the ships inertia. So when you add more generators or mass blocks, it increases the force the mass drive exerts on the ship to overcome the inertia. I hope this makes sense to you.

    • @sjsushi1595
      @sjsushi1595 10 років тому

  • @chloekaftan
    @chloekaftan 9 років тому

    there are two problems with this video, the first is obvious - we already have jump drives, but this is an old video so yeah.. the second is that any ship with artificial mass and gravity generator blocks that are all on tend to spiral out of control and crash towards a planetary gravitational sphere of influence, even without gravity generators this will happen since artificial gravity is overridden by planetary gravity, so as long as there are mass blocks in your ship landing will be suicidal.
