I've seen a lot of shows on Broadway, but this was, by far, the most gorgeous thing I've ever seen. From the first note until the last - the singing, the dancing, the instrumentalists - everything is brilliant!
When I hear that climax where they are all singing "arabian nights" very loudly, I wanna join in so badly. Being allowed to freely put all my passion into my voice has always been the best thing to me in choir.
Instantly fell in love with this Genie, which was so unexpected considering how much I adored Robin Williams. You know it's a great show when you just start smiling a little into the opening number and it just transports you into full on happiness. Amazing performance all around!
I saw this performance live, and nothing can possibly capture how strong and loud it sounds in person. I remember getting an adrenaline rush, it was so powerful... 10/10 recommend!!
In 6th grade I went to see Aladdin as a chorus trip and the genie mentioned us in the beginning, saying something about the students who came there and pointed at my class. It was so amazing, I spent all my money on a teddy bear dressed in some snazzy clothes
Melody Dyk well as far as I know, the broadway play hasn't been cancled, but the genie has been replaced because James Monroe Iglehart has chosen to do a role in Hamilton from now on, but Aladdin will still be happening, just not the same genie, I hope that helps ^.^ also I'm sorry for my late reply
I learned this song in a workshop and we did storytelling techniques and it is really interesting because it helps you get into the story more once you see it. Definitely worth seeing.
From their gazes to the tips of their toes they were in perfect sync!!!! Saw it in the same place for me birthday and it was- well words can not even express my love for this and other musicals!!!
1:09 that woman’s voice just scratches my brain Every time this comes up on my Spotify playlist I wait on the edge of my seat for her part Same with high adventure
I was lucky enough to see this last year. AMAZING!! if you can afford tickets you haveeee to go! beautiful costumes and stages and the music and acting is divine! :))
Fun Fact: Jonathan Freeman, the actor who plays the voice of Jafar in the 1992 animated movie, also plays the role of the character in the Broadway musical.
Every time I see scenes from this play, I love it more and more. Especially cause of Genie. But however, for the first time, I have to question the directing style with how the scene opened; because I feel I'm correctly assuming this is the Show's Intro. For the one thing; the song opened up on the Chorus. That's something that I don't believe Song's should do, unless they immediately want you pumped. Because Stage Musicals have the Luxury of Show and Don't Tell, I feel like a song should always open in a calmer fashion and then lead up to the Chorus. And then as the song goes on, it becomes bigger and louder and more exciting. If it were me directing, I'd have Genie disguised as a Merchant - much like in the movie. He'd slowly walk on stage from the side - or maybe even travel through the audience using the lamp to light his path. (That would help build atmosphere) I'd have the Agrabah Stage-Set in darkness under a very dim blue light, with the ensemble slowly moving about their routine. (Again - building atmosphere) When Genie walks onto stage, set to the music, he begins to sing the intro to the song. "Oh I come from a land; it's a far away place, where the Caravan Camels Roam." Then as he slowly makes his way to center-stage, he surely approaches the Chorus of the Song. Then as he - and he alone - sings the chorus of the song, the stage lights up to better reveal the Agrabah set-piece and shows just how colorful it is, as well as the ensemble on-stage. Their role becomes more prominent as they move from their routine positions and begin to simulate a "busy community". Genie then faces the audience and acknowledges them, finally adding the lines at the beginning. "Welcome to Agrabah. What? You've never been? Well...Let me tell you ALL about it." And then the song can finally commence with the Ensemble joining in the dance routine; it's as if Agrabah has come alive to perform this show. I admit that the end of the Scene was PERFECT; exactly how it should go, with the entire cast coming together to perform. It just needed a bit more subtlety in order to earn that ending; build up to it more properly. But that's just my opinion. Does anyone agree? Disagree? Feel free to let me know, and tell me what you would do.
+GanonGhidorah I admittedly didn't read your whole comment, but I think they opted to do this opening Greek chorus style, as in, the chorus comes in at the opening, tells you exactly what you're about to see, and then the show starts. (Chorus here as in "all-knowing character" or "narrator", not as in "the refrain in a song.") I do get that you literally mean they start singing the "Arabian nights like Arabian days" lyrics first, instead of starting with a verse, like in the movie. But I think my comment is still relevant, as this into very much screams "Greek chorus, as used in Greek tragedies and comedies." *edit* I'd also like to point out that the show isn't the same as the movie, so there are a few changes.
Have you ever seen this on broadway? Well if you didn't, there is an overture and then the curtain comes actually down and the genie (JMI) has his own opening and his own set of lines that makes the audience laugh, but in this particular video they didn't show that. They just showed "Arabian Nights" which what the video is for, not the actual opening. Hope that helped!
+Zora Catone it's changed so much since Toronto I actually loved it in Toronto despite what everyone was saying about it but it got a million times better when it went to Broadway 😍😍😍
Uh . . . who's Aladdin's 3rd posse member? I get why Carpet had to be turned into a human - even on Broadway it's hard to make folks believe in a dancing rug. And I understand why Abu had to be turned into a human, especially if Iago was given the same treatment. But who's the 3rd guy supposed to be? Or are they all supposed to be Abu, and Carpet shows up later in the Cave of Wonders?
+ztslovebird I like the solution that California adventure gave to carpet. The person playing it moved very well and it looked entertaining. Am I the only one that thought the 3 "friends" made the show lose a bit of its Aladdin feeling? I also wished more focus to the Genie. the actor is AMAZING, he deserved more screen time in my opinion. But I guess I'm just being too picky :/
Jessia Medeiros Agreed. Aladdin's plight as a penniless loner is less pronounced when he has 3 friends, and his receiving the three wishes while the friends have to be his entourage makes Aladdin seem more selfish and shallow.
I saw in a third world country a much better version of Disney´s Aladdin than this. At least, a more imaginative theater experience, and twice as spectacular as this one.
They should have study a lot more. With an excellent musical material and an enormous fantasy and theatrical material that could be used directly from A thousand and one nights, this show is the lack of everything. Wrong colors, wrong actors (I don´t know why, in every excerpt, the Genie is just standing center stage and when his voice can not do what a genie voice most suddenly appears a woman dressed in the uggliest costumes (in my opinion) seen on Broadway and do the job of the main character. What????? Suppose this show never should have take its way to Broadway. Absurd additions wtf with Aladdin's friends?

I love the costumes!!!
Same I'm still obsessed
The show is beyond amazing!!! I'm seeing for the 4th Time this Friday!!!
Liane Lonergan THATS WHAT I SAID!!!
Melody Dyk ikr I saw it as well
When I hear that climax where they are all singing "arabian nights" very loudly, I wanna join in so badly. Being allowed to freely put all my passion into my voice has always been the best thing to me in choir.

The harmonies in this song are absolutely insane
In 6th grade I went to see Aladdin as a chorus trip and the genie mentioned us in the beginning, saying something about the students who came there and pointed at my class. It was so amazing, I spent all my money on a teddy bear dressed in some snazzy clothes
there were rumors of Aladin being discontinued like Beauty and the Beast but this version is great and brilliant I see this having a bright future
I saw it a couple of weeks ago and it was amazing
You will NEVER see the movie the same way again. I was beyond amazed.
3:41 chills everytime...

Yes, I saw it twice in Sydney! Mesmerising! I would see it again.
Jonathan Freeman (Jafar) was Jafar from the movie.
it was my favourite part in the musical by far
Fun Fact: Jonathan Freeman, the actor who plays the voice of Jafar in the 1992 animated movie, also plays the role of the character in the Broadway musical.
When this aired I Started Crying
3:42 Is when they do the dance
that was epic!

TheSilverandBronzeShow
No; just a really good Director.

私も!
We're doing aldin for a school play and I'm in this part
At 1:31 it started to sound like "Snake in the Grass" from The Little Prince...
@1:48 did anyone else hears the battle them to pokemon? lmao
Yessssss
When i was 8-9 i danced it in front of my class. They clapped SO HARD my ear started to make sounds like:eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
Personally, I preferred it when Babkak, Omar and Kassim did this song.
***** Since when? When I went to see this on Broadway, the Genie (James Monroe Iglehart) did this song, and he was fantastic!
When I saw the premiere in Toronto BEFORE this went to Broadway, it was still sung by the three.
Oh, I didn't know that. Sorry! :(
It's okay. :) I get that a lot. To be honest, I haven't seen it since it went to Broadway.
+Zora Catone it's changed so much since Toronto I actually loved it in Toronto despite what everyone was saying about it but it got a million times better when it went to Broadway 😍😍😍
What happen to the original?
Ummm, so what happened to all the verses?
it's much more amazing in real life, trust me
big moment at 3:41
Anybody got the lyrics to this version of the song?
I really want the lyrics too!
kinda wishing I'd seen this...

The short answer is that there IS no Abu. The long answer is that Aladdin hangs around with three other thieves named Babkak, Omar, and Kasim.
And the carpet wasn't a human

Exactly!
1:09 Cool woman.
Aladdin
I watched this. the tickets were like $100
I dunno, this seems like a mashup of Tradition and LeChaim from Fiddler, in a weird way.
But is it better than The Lion King?
They are both equally incredible ❤️
2024
Major attaway is better at the genie part I just went on Saturday it's great
kamtiller it’s true. He’s much better. Saw it 2 days ago.
I saw in a third world country a much better version of Disney´s Aladdin than this. At least, a more imaginative theater experience, and twice as spectacular as this one.
