@@OldExodus I’ll make one for the 3500 in the next month for sure. I need to do a little work on my own 3500 anyways so it’s a perfect excuse. Thanks for watching!
Thank you for very informative article. I have W906 4x4 with ZG3 and left CV is bad, so replacing the both CVs. 130 000kms on the clock, 245/75 R16, sometimes serious offroading.
This is awesome thanks Tim! I just had the rear driver bearing go out at 40000 and had the axel assembly replaced under the drive train warranty. This helped a lot on understanding the whole thing.
Keep the good work! Love the knowledge you’re sharing. Just replaced both right and left rear hub and spline shafts. I could hear a clunking sound when putting in Drive or Reverse that got louder with time. Shavings could be seen on driver when hub was removed. 🙌🤓🍻
I think you will find that as rear axle load approaches or exceeds the rated load the flex of the axle housing/hub will begin to result is significant relative movement between the male and female splines. Large tires, spacers and offset wheels that create a longer level arm to flex the housing/hub exasperate the problem, especially when driving on rough roads. I suspect these factors are contributing to the spline failures you are seeing.
I would agree with your assessment. The 35" tires, 32mm offset wheels and far over GVW vans that we see coming through the shop on a regular basis would also back that theory up.
@@mtbsavant5414 great question. I would have to do a little research to find out. In fact, I would love to simply try that here at the shop just to know. I just ready this comment today, and to be honest I think you just won the bid for my next video. Thanks for the great suggestion. I’ll make this video this week so stay tuned! 👊🏻
Awesome vid. As a 23' 3500xd awd owner I'd love to see a deep tech dive on differences and things you guys run into often
@@RichardFermion I’ll make it happen 👊🏻

Great video Tim! Keep it up!
Brilliant video, in fact one of the best I've seen explaining how the Merc hub works and what the problems could be.

Would it be possible to overide the computer (dyno mode or otherwise) to allow a sprinter to limp to a shop in 4wd mode should a rear axle go out?

Are they failing because of the the abuse the vehicle is taken ?
I'm sure that is certainly a factor in some cases.
