I was there for the last service of the hour of power at the Crystal Cathedral.. it was actually my first visit and I was amazed how the organ 'rumbled my bones' inside my body! I didn't realize the power of this wonderful organ. It was magnificent!

Thanks for posting this! As someone who sang in the Crystal Cathedral for three years and sat in the choir loft right in front of this mighty and magnificent instrument for 4 hours a week (two services) every week, this is the FIRST video I've seen on UA-cam that genuinely captures what it felt and sound like to hear that amazing organ. On the broadcasts, the sound is always mixed, adjusted, and balanced to accomodate, choir, organ, and orchestra. Thanks again!

Years ago when the CC 1st opened up, I and several priest buddies went to see Dr S sermon and hear this organ.
WOW on all his sermons best ever and the organ and choir....
What amazes me is how when the organist hit some high notes the glass did not break amazing.
Now the CC is owned by the catholic archdiocese of Orange county, they bought it for some 43 MILLION US$++++
Would luv to know what the annual upkeep, utility costs are for this CC.
But to see so many people attend brought a lot of gladness and joy.
No matter what church, temple etc you go to, it is wonderful when we all can go for an hour or so, to worship and Honor Our Lord and to share in small moment of peace and love.
No matter what faith you are or no faith, my prayers are with you one and all.
Of all of the words attributed to Christ Our Lord, I think the comment......and lo I shall be with you even unto the end of the earth.
    Pax+

My dad was a church organist and he also gave concerts. He graduated from the Chicago Conservatory of Music in 1911 and was a piano tuner and pipe organ tuner along with his 3 sons and grandsons in western Michigan for many years. As a young boy would go with them to hold the keys while tuning in some of the larger churches in west Michigan, and also went into the organ chambers.I frequently listen to Michael Barrone on NPR radio to PIPE DREAMS as he describes about some of the largest pipe organ world wide, ranks, age etc .

I really love the Chamades coming in at 2:05 and especially on 3:47. These stops easily can dominate the full Crystal Cathedral organ.❤️❤️❤️
PS: Same on 5:05 I also love the Cornet stop playing in this part of this video on the main organ in Crystal Cathedral. It really has an amazing Timbre sound like a real Cornet which is a small trumpet sometimes played in a symphony orchestra.

Although cathedral size spaces often provide a wonderful acoustic for the organ there are a number of modern structures built on this scale whose acoustics fight any instrument installed there. The Crystal Cathedral is one as is St Mary’s, Tokyo.

The huge Ruffatti at Saints Peter and Paul still plays well, but the Archdiocese of Los Angeles will obviously need to do a major Chancel remodel to properly accommodate Mass. Dr. Schuller's old pulpit, on centerline as of this video, will need relocation, as the centerline of the Sanctuary is the historical alignment axis for the altar of repose and Communion rail in Catholic chapels, and likely also the bishop's seat in cathedrals.

I've read in the CD booklet of "Four Masterworks For Organ" by Fred Swann (get that CD now you still can!) that the only time the organ isn't affected by the high Californian temprature is between 19:00 and 20:00 after that tempratures rise again and the organ gets detuned. So there's always only hour to do recordings.

Next time you visit CC, try this experiment: program one memory piston setup using ONLY the Aolean-Skinner ranks and program a second memory using ONLY the Ruffati ranks. For both memories, work the generals up 1 being softest to 15 loudest. Play the same piece (eg. the Widor Tocotta) on each memory, then compare/contrast. I bet when the late Virgil Fox designed this instrument, he interwove Skinner and Rufatti ranks within each of the many divisions.
