First round “huh it looks like each colour chose a different action card”. I love that you sound surprised. Great demonstration of the game.
I absolutely love how every player has a different personality and strategy in each game.
Hehe, I was laughing to myself about that one when I recorded it. "Wow!" I honestly spent like 15 minutes trying to figure out three separate but "ok" openers for the players.
I needed comprehensive and trustworthy information on Rise and Fall gameplay - and thankfully JonGetsGames can be relied upon to come to the rescue! As with many other games before, thank you again for your great way of presenting and explaining not only the rules of a game, but also the 'feel' and flow.
And although in the end it turned out to be not really my cup of tea, this was an enjoyable hour of my time, and you conveyed the interesting and fun parts that the game has very well.
If you are covering a Game then it needs no rulebook. Atleast for me. Its a Perfect Match of Speed, own thoughts and volume of information to get the Flow of a Game. Thank you for your work 👍🏻
Thanks for all the kind words, I'm glad you enjoyed this :)
42:52 moving your Merchant, you'd have set yourself up for a larger gold payout on a later turn by placing the Merchant between Blue's City and your own, rather than in Blue's City. You'd only get 5 Coins if positioned inside Blue's city, but placed between you'd also get 3 Coins from your own City. It would almost double the Coins you'd make.
Yeah, someone else mentioned this in a comment too. I was so focused on showing an example of having a merchant share a location with a city that I didn't notice that clearly better move.
Hmmm, you sell me on games too often. Septembers a loaded month but this tutorials put this to the top of my list for now. Last month Bloodstones snuck in as my pick thanks to your tutorial, keep up the great work! Not to many though! 😅😂
As per usual, excellent job!!
Ok, I'm definitely gonna have to give this one a try now. Looks like it has a lot of fun choices! Great playthrough
Im very exited when I see you post a video like this, an hour of a Civ type game I have not previously heard of. Made my night Jon!
That's so great to hear :)
Wauh, I've never seen map building like this, amazing! Very smart ideas throughout the game design! Impressive👍
Agreed!
Thanks. Looks like an interesting mix of Concordia and some other games.
I'm very excited for this. I love the tiles and map building.
It feels like a 4x game for people who are conflict averse.
I believe that is exactly what the designer was going for with this one. Glad you enjoyed this :)
What an interesting looking game! The map generation and the cliff system is both intuitive and looks REALLY cool, and also I really hope that they keep the coins as they are as they look great as well! Gameplay looks fun, I'm gonna have to keep my eye on this one.
Perfectly explained. Thanks a lot. Helped my to back the all in :)
Great video Jon, thank you
I was on the fence and finally decided to watch your video. Thank you for putting it out! This game seems very repetitive, incremental, and possibly boring even 😊
It looks beautiful, however, and, the Minecraft-like world building looks interesting.
This game looks right up my alley. Some of those asymmetric abilities seemed pretty powerful, wondering how balanced they are?
Very helpful. Thank you.
Great tutorial, thanks!
Great to hear, glad you liked it :)
Seems like a very smart design. They've hidden a tech tree in the cycling of unit types (very clever) and the card system of knowing what all your units do is a great user interface.
I agree, it's a neat hidden tech tree that is super fluid as you play.
Wish this was a full playthrough! Thanks for presenting this ...
Unfortunately I simply don't have enough time to film these all the way to the end anymore. My video metrics showed that less than 10% of people watched until the end and my time-tracking software showed me that about 2/3s of the project was taken up with filming to the end and this just didn't make sense to continue doing.
@@JonGetsGames I understand, still doesn't mean I can't wish :)
Really like how to map comes together. Got me interested!
Me too!
1 year later and I still can’t find a place to buy this. 😞
Great video, Jon - thanks for doing this. I guess it's not just a new version of "Archipelago", which I love, but it's good this is something very unique.
I've always wanted to try Archipelago but never had the opportunity. I see lots of cool ideas in Rise & Fall, so I can imagine their earlier designs are also compelling.
Hi Jon and thanks for the video, great work as always. Did you, as you sometimes do, create a private TTS mod ? Or maybe the publisher asked you to create one, or you offered them to make it public ? If not, do you know if an official mod is in the pipeline (yes that question would probably be better in the campaign's comment 😅) ? Once more, thanks for this Learn While Playing !
I don't blame you for asking :) Unfortunately, this is not something I have created. I'd be interested in doing so but they haven't expressed interest up to this point. They had a link on the page to try the game out digitally, but I don't know the details of how that works.
24:20 on game length - although you decide at the start I'm guessing if all players agree you could change it if you want to continue playing... Or if it's already 1am!
I suppose you could do that :)
@@JonGetsGames I wasn't going to - but I've backed it.
The game looks very fun and I am excited for it but at the same time its not estimated to ship out until December 2023. So I would expect it around February 2024. Looking forward to it though.
@43:00 - why wouldn't you stop the merchant on the plains between the 2 cities? Wouldn't you have been able to trade with both and earn 8 coins?
Your suggested move is significantly better, I think I was just too focused on showing that Merchant's can co-exist with Cities that I didn't think to consider an alternate.
@@JonGetsGames Well and then either way your merchant was going to have to run away from that temple!
Hi Jon! Just wanted to compliment on the great tutorial - after the video I'm almost ready to go with the game? Also, out of curiosity. What is so far your favourite "T" game by Mr. Tascini?
If I had to pick, I'd give it to the newest one Tiletum I think. That being said, in general I respect the T series more then I purely enjoy them.
Thanks for the answer. Also, apologize for my mistake as my comment was supposed to be pasted in your newest tutorial for Tiletum:( That's why I asked about "T" series. Sorry again and have a good day.
Are the illustrations on the tiles just fluff? Particularly on the Plains and Water tiles. Also, while realizing you have a prototype, what do you think of the meeples? Are they more than one piece of wood, or are they just painted separately? If they are more than one piece, are they loose or well-connected?
I thought the meeples were lovely, they appear to be separate pieces of wood that are glued together. My whole copy was a prototype so the quality of the pieces isn't indicative of what the final one will be, but from what I saw they were well connected. And yes, the illustrations on the tiles do not have any in-game effect.
Looks like an interesting game. Didn't like the assymetric tile powers that increase a players tile majority by 3 or 6 points per tile, that seems over powered especially if someone get one or more and the other players get none. Hopefully they play tested those types of scenario's. I guess you could house rule them out. On the other hand, it would be a great for less experienced players to feel less intimidated if they were given one of those powers while playing against more experienced players.
According to the game’s Kickstarter page it looks like you’ve confused Nomads with Merchants and vice versa?
I don't believe that's true, at least not according to the rulebook that was sent to me. Perhaps I got tongue-tied at some point, do you remember when this seemed to happen?
Jon, looks like you rated this a 7. Do you have any videos that go into depth on your thoughts on this? And would you recommend the 8-player variant with two boxes?
Yeah, I recorded a long segment about how that play went in one of my Patreon exclusive opinions vlogs. I've only played it 2p so honestly I can't say what even 4p feels like let alone 8p. That big of a game feels crazy, probably not something I'd personally be interested in.
Just to ask quickly, if one player has only one type of unit out in the world and that unit's card is put into decline and the player didn't have enough money to buy it back or any cards during the decline phase, are they out of the game at that point?
I was wondering if the rulebook explains what to do in that situation, since you didn't mention what happens if the card being decline during the phase happens to be the only card the player has in their hand and/or discard pile and couldn't afford to buy back any cards during that phase.
If you do not have enough money to buy back a card, leaving you with no cards, then you are eliminated from the game. The rulebook mentions this and says it's a very rare occurrence, which is why I didn't think it was necessary to point it out in this video.
@@JonGetsGames So, it's possible to win if you'll the last person remaining in the game if everyone else is out due to all of their cards being in decline and broke in money?
Jon you sold me on this game. I backed it 2 years ago and I think the company is no more? a REAL SHAME. They wont answer any emails as well.
P.S. wanna sell me your copy? =)
Huh, I had no idea there was potential trouble with the fulfillment. I do hope they sort that out! I don't have that copy anymore, sorry.
Minute 42: if the merchant would stand 1 space up, you benefit from 2 spots, so that would be better I think?
Yeah, I didn't notice it because I was so focused on showing an example of a merchant sharing a space with a city.
Looks strikingly like Brazil imperial
Comments are back… Interesting…🤔
I don’t understand the context of your comment.
@@JonGetsGames Maybe I did something wrong but, for the last 2 days of the kickstarter campaign the comments seemed to have disappeared
Maybe YT was glitching, I've never turned comments off on any videos before.
That setup looks like a chore.
I found it to be very enjoyable, seeing a totally different world be made each time. I did it three times total (once while learning, once when playing with a friend, and once for this tutorial) and found it quick and interesting each time.
That map building is kinda aweful. It is just a table bump disaster away from ruining every game you play of this...
Too simplistic for a civilization game for my tastes. Pass.
Building the map at the start seems so tedious. I hope they just have suggested setups.
Huh, I personally found it quite compelling. I normally skip showing setup but I found it so interesting that I decided to add it into this video. I played this once with a friend and found that creation process together to be quite entertaining. I am a sucker for tile laying though :)
I think that it could add a significant amount of extra time to the game with not that much benefit. I would possibly houserule that someone just builds a map to save time.
I have only played a full game once and the world building (at 2 players) took no more than 5 minutes total.
