Oh man ... You gave me flashbacks to my former career .. I was in Revenue Management for a major international airline and was the guy responsible for setting and managing the cargo fuel surcharges for the global cargo business. Very, very big numbers and a penny adjustment either way factored to enormous amounts of money; gained or lost. I do not miss that stress one single bit!
Hey hey JJ, great informative video. I'm sure this has helped several drivers that are just getting out here. Hope your doing much better here at the Star 🌟.
I'm glad you said it's negotiable. Sometimes they can't add extra fuel but they can add it under deadhead, hazmat tolls ect. Iv found the vast majority of the time they can add more and you can get 100% of your fuel paid by accessorials. Im averaging around 68-69% to the truck of the total revenue booked
No, Landstar doesn't have anything to do with the lease at all. To be at Landstar you have to own your truck or be making payments to a finance company but Landstar isn't involved in that at all. And it's 35% LOL which seems like a lot and it is but they do a lot for that 35% and you still end up making more money compared with being at a fleet like prime or similar. You can make more money having your own authority because you get 100%, but it is a lot more work and money still ends up going to other places such as broker commissions, factoring, etc.
Hi JJ I just came across your channel I watched you when was at Prime, anyway I’m currently at Prime as a lease op how’s Landstar cause I was actually thinking about buying a truck and going to Landstar but that 35% they take sounds crazy but than again Prime might actually be taking more than 28% since I don’t see the actual ratecone…..
You definitely hit the nail on the head there lol. Don't get me wrong, Prime was excellent to start with and I don't have really anything against them but the rate that your seeing is definitely much lower than the rates that are really out there. I know 35% sounds like a lot but it's 35% of a much larger number and Landstar does quite a bit for their 35%. Not quite as much as Prime and you are a little bit more on your own but you have way more Independence. And yes I'm definitely making a lot more here compared to prime. Although with the market like it is now, it still sucks a little lol. If you think you'll be in the market for a truck soon, stay tuned. I'm probably going to be selling my truck fairly soon. More details to come
JJ - Question for you. I am starting my CDL training through a national training center near my house. Once I complete the 6-8 week program and get my cdl can I work for Prime? If I can will I need to go through another complete cdl training ? Thank you
You need to explain that to your brothers running loads off the load board, spot market. When i talk to them about fuel surcharges they look at me like i have two heads.
JJ you continue to give fantastic info vids. I have a Prime ?. When you call at prime for a new load do you talk to your fleet mngr it seems like some people are talking to sales for loads. In my day at TMC we only called our fleet mngr only. Thanks JJ
I only ever spoke with my fleet manager. I never spoke to anybody at sales. They were the nameless figureheads that allegedly and supposedly were there controlling everything but we never got to speak to them, meet them, or know anything about them. LOL
Vandenberg is in Lompoc Ca. Shuttle landed at Edwards AFB. Just off of Hi way 58. The airport you're referring to is Mojave Ca. Know the area very well. LoL
Hello, I Have a cat c15 acer Avrege about 5 mpg Some time 4.5pmg So for me to run the truck now it's cost me around $1 per mile or $1.10 per mile. So I want to go work for Landstar, but if they pay only a half or less for fuel and take 35% I don't know what to do. I need to go to do truck inspection and drug test and I have to pay from my packet:(
I'm sorry to hear that. I have a feeling that those with low fuel mileage are going to be hurting the most in this downward cycle. Best of luck to you though.
I have been with Lynn Starr for about 3 weeks and hold about 10 loads for them and only 2 of the loads have had a fuel source charge so charge so I'm guessing it is about a 20% ratio of the loads that actually offer a fuel surcharge does that sound right to you?
No, that does not sound right at all. Every single load should have a fuel surcharge included. If you get the rate confirmation and there's no fuel surcharge, call the agent back and make sure that they add the fuel surcharge on there. I've never had any load that did not have a fuel surcharge included. But keep in mind, the fuel surcharge is not always listed on the load board but when you get the rate confirmation it will be listed there.
@@JJtheTrucker OK thank you so very much that is very interesting very interesting as I am still trying to learn all the questions to ask which you have mentioned in previous videos knowing which questions to ask
Here are the questions that I asked them every time. Does this deliver to Walgreens, target or home depot? Is a lumper involved? Shipper and receiver live unload? -if not, is it drop & hook, drop & wait or drop & lose? Tolls? Loading, unloading, securement?
I didn’t understand your example, you said the load is $1k, 35% of that’s is $350, so you are making $650 after landstar cut, so the $200 for Fuel surcharge comes after that? So you’ll be making $850 with the Fuel surcharge?
Not exactly. The fuel surcharge comes to me first so if the load is $1,000 and the fuel surcharge is $200, that leaves $800 left in the line haul. Landstar makes 35% of that $800 that's left in the line haul which is $280. 1000-280=720
No, the Drone is nice and fun and everything but it really is a hassle to deal with in the truck. Just too much with the little time that I have anymore. I ended up giving it to my mom.
Did I call in Vandenberg Air Force Base in the video? LOL I get those two mixed up because I knew an Edward Vandenberg. But you're right it was actually Edwards Air Force Base out there.
Not to start any type of controversy whatsoever but landstar doesn't take 35%. It's all landstar's freight to begin with. All landstar drivers enter an agreement that they get 65% of what that load pays. Landstar harvests all the loads, factors all of the drivers taxes, fuel surcharges, fuel discounts, pays their employees, ect. That costs money and that's what Landstar's 35% pays for. I just don't like it when drivers say landstar takes 35% of my money.

This is a great explanation. I appreciate you, JJ. ✌️
Hey JJ,,
Very well explained.
Yes prices are sky rocketing. Crazy man
Yeah buddy you keep up the good work..

That’s a lot to keep up with. I can see how someone could really get messed up not paying attention to their Pennies. Stay safe buddy.
It is amazing how the gases prices have rose up, especially Diesel!! I’m sure that helps with Working for a good company! Stay safe my friend!!

So much has changed since I was there. Best bet is to call Prime and speak to a recruiter.
You need to explain that to your brothers running loads off the load board, spot market. When i talk to them about fuel surcharges they look at me like i have two heads.

They all fuel BCO nightmares. Lots of waiting, sometimes days to get unloaded.

A lot if money for factoring if you have own authority ? I thought I was 1 to 5%
So what if your not using there fuel surcharge?
Great info
Vanderberg Air Force base is near Lompoc. Edwards Air Force base is near Mojave.
And the space shuttle landed at Edwards AFB several times.

Your aunt daughter? That's a new one. Are you from Alabama by any chance? LOL
I'd rather be in "the middle of nowhere" in Cali instead of driving in the LA/SF/SAC areas
I agree 100%! In fact this morning I picked up a load out of Los Angeles. What a mess.

Inam lost JJ but that's ok
