I read the giver for class and at first I thought I was gonna hate it but I turned out to love it and I had to watch the movie and I'm excited to read all of them and see what happens. The ending of the giver has me omg I can't even. So mad. I feel like the author could've gave us a better ending. Wow I what is happening to me I'm supposed to hate books.
Marlin Escobar same I read it for a class project and it had the most annoying ending cuz I was so into it and then it just ends off with us having to make our own ending...
Marlin Escobar I agree with you it should have a better ending I was super mad when I finish the book I didn't like the ending the author should I make ending more happiness
All those books are conected with each other, I mean you have to read them to understand one story, or they just have some similarites, some common clues, with each other and they are four different stories?
Yeah Son definitely gave me what I wanted out of the endings of the others. I think I agree about Messenger being my least favorite as well. I didn't know it was a series until someone gave me the books a couple months ago haha
Gathering Blue is contemporaneous with The Giver, and the main characters in each show up the last two books. They're not the main characters, but you get to find out what happens to them. I was given my copies all separately, but I did a quick search on the interwebs and found The Giver Quartet 20th Anniversary boxed set that will be available in November this year. It has the covers I have.
I'm glad you decided to finish them! I didn't realize my covers weren't normal since I'd never seen the book before I was given them all, but I like them better than the originals. You could repurchase the first book to match the others since maybe you'll reread it in the future?
Thanks! It was actually hard not to walk that line between giving enough info and not spoiling. I ended up cutting out a bunch of video I thought might spoil something. And yeah, you won't have closure until the end of the last book, but they're still fantastic!
Shades of Grey by Fforde is on my list of books to pick up! I've heard nothing but good things about it. I think I'll move that up on my list so I can read it sooner.
Awesome! I hope you do. Lois Lowry is great. They're coming out with a boxed set for the copies I have in November, but I think it might be cheaper just to buy them separately :/
4 years ago I read the giver for school but with my rep it was way beyond my reading level but I still loved it the teacher would read it, Anyway I just bought the 4 books and I am so exited to read the collection
I haven't read The Giver, I mean it was assigned in school but I didn't actually read it. But we went to see this play of The Giver as a school and I kind of remember thinking the story was interesting. But I have no recollection of what it's about, I may like it who knows! Though I had no idea that it was a series. I'm going to have to look into these books! Awesome review! I can't wait to see what you post next!
I read the first one in school (11th grade), about 11 or 12 years ago.... One year ago I had the mood (or craving) to rerad it and I discovered that there were two other books, so I bought them and read the three books (and liked them). After that I read that there would be the fourth book, but I decided last year that I will wait until it is released as paperback. Sadly I have different editions of the books (the first one is a german school edition...), yours look so much prettier. :-)
This review is way old lol but I'm happy you found out there are some follow up books. I enjoyed them when I read them! I'm probably due for a reread of the series.
This my list of favorite books in the giver quartet: 1. Giver 2.Son (I'm still on part 3, so this might be my 1st favorite!) 3.Gathering Blue 4.Messenger(I didn't like it to much, because it was very fast at the begging then slow, I I didn't have a connection with the characters that much. But still don't skip that one!) I would read the whole series if I were you! There all great books! Though, you don't have to read Gathering Blue and Messenger because those don't relate to the giver. But still read it! Also, I wanted to get the Messenger new copy but it seems like it's not really at stores, I looked at Amazon there were none!
I read them all before I made this video. I kept it spoiler free so that's why I didn't go into plot details for the sequels! I'm glad you're enjoying it so much!!
These sound really interesting and made me think of a book I read the other day called Shades of Grey by Jasper Fforde (not 50 shades, that's a very different book) about a society based around perception of colour. Anyway, it's all idyllic but isn't really and I think you might enjoy it!
I don't think I was ever assigned it, but if I was, I surely found a way not to read it haha. It's much better to read things by your own choice, I think. Thanks! You should check 'em out. And the next one should be soon.
The main character of the third book is a secondary character of the third, and the main character of the scond shows up in both the third and forth. I wouldn't skip it if I were you.
I never knew there were other books, till my friend told me about it. And now im trying to see the story of the other books. Yes definitely the ending is sooooo ughhh, like give me more, like what happened next?!?! Is that it?? But I love the book! Its just the cliff hangers 😂😂
+Nicholas Murray I hope you enjoy it! I obviously haven't read the books in a long time, but I think I would still have the same feelings as I had in this video.
I finished reading the giver.... Its so rude to end it that way---> but i mean, are Jonas or Gabe or maybe the giver on the other books, because I really wanna know what happened to them😫😫
If you must know Jonas and Gabe’s fate is shown is the messager as they survive and Jonas becomes the leader of the village in the messager and appears in son and we learn about Gabe’s birth mother in it aswell
I actually don’t know where I’ve put it since I filmed this 7-ish years ago. I should find it, and put it back up where I live currently. Mine has some water damage, but I got it from my grandfather.
I really liked Son, because the end finally gave me closure. Messenger had to be my least favorite I felt it was a little bit more slow. But really love the whole series. I was forced to read the first one in middle school. I remember my teacher saying to imagine what happened after the first one. No one knew it was a series back then.
I read the giver for class and at first I thought I was gonna hate it but I turned out to love it and I had to watch the movie and I'm excited to read all of them and see what happens. Thaylany Recio read the son, it tells what happens to the characters
SAME
no joke but the same thing happened to me
All those books are conected with each other, I mean you have to read them to understand one story, or they just have some similarites, some common clues, with each other and they are four different stories?
....I've been reading them in the wrong order.... ( - ______________ - )
haha oops! Well if you mix up the first two, it's not a big deal.
Angel Stadelman well that’s annoying
🤦♂️
Yeah Son definitely gave me what I wanted out of the endings of the others. I think I agree about Messenger being my least favorite as well.
I didn't know it was a series until someone gave me the books a couple months ago haha
Great Review! I read The Giver for class and I really want to buy the box set for this quartet.
They look so pretty in this edition! (sounds also kinda AMAZING)

Holy shit theres a sequel to the giver?!
I'm glad you decided to finish them! I didn't realize my covers weren't normal since I'd never seen the book before I was given them all, but I like them better than the originals. You could repurchase the first book to match the others since maybe you'll reread it in the future?

It was awesome, but they ending ya know it's like I still want moreeee..
That's why they made three more...
Shades of Grey by Fforde is on my list of books to pick up! I've heard nothing but good things about it. I think I'll move that up on my list so I can read it sooner.

Good job explaining it without spoiling everything 😃
Nice review! My favorite is the giver then messenger then son then gathering blue.
Yeah that's a good lineup. The giver was awesome
Yay - it's great. I went to see Jasper Fforde give a talk recently and he was chatting about the sequel for it and I can't wait to read that now!
4 years ago I read the giver for school but with my rep it was way beyond my reading level but I still loved it the teacher would read it, Anyway I just bought the 4 books and I am so exited to read the collection
Good review Connor! Personally my favorite is The Giver
+Andres Barrios Thanks! The Giver is awesome, so that's a great choice!
I did not realize it was a series until I got to the third book in the series. I did not know how I read the second book without knowing, but I did.
I read the giver and that's it
You should continue if you get the chance!
Noah Dennis me too...

I’m the type that reads half puts it down and finish it later. Started son 8 months ago and just now about to finish it
The second isn't related to the first at all so I could see how that would easily happen. It's not until the third when the first two are connected.
Matt from gathering blue says something at the end and so does Kira's father
I read The Giver in an english class one school year and I had no idea there were more books! 4 years later here we are!! lol :)
This review is way old lol but I'm happy you found out there are some follow up books. I enjoyed them when I read them! I'm probably due for a reread of the series.
This my list of favorite books in the giver quartet:

Ah, I have to read it quick then to be ready for the next one. I only fear spreading myself too thin over all the series I've started :/
I wish I could hug you through the screen. Someone else who gas ACTUALLY read all of them! Thank you!!
haha I feel the love!
These sound really interesting and made me think of a book I read the other day called Shades of Grey by Jasper Fforde (not 50 shades, that's a very different book) about a society based around perception of colour. Anyway, it's all idyllic but isn't really and I think you might enjoy it!

Is leader from the messenger jonas
would it be okay if i skip over gathering blue or do i have to read it to understand the rest.
someone please reply.
The main character of the third book is a secondary character of the third, and the main character of the scond shows up in both the third and forth. I wouldn't skip it if I were you.

Can you be more specific as to what you're talking about because I have no idea?
What's that song from the intro from?
+Hannah Flint haha oh man this is an old video. I think it's from The Mindy Project. Embarrassing lol
Thanks*
Are they in order?
+Weebmeter :Re I review them in order if that's what you are asking. It's The Giver, Gathering Blue, Messenger, and then Son
Connor O'Brien I finished reading the giver just now, I'm totally reading it's sequels. I loved it lol
I just ordered gathering blue and I hope it's awesome
+Nicholas Murray I hope you enjoy it! I obviously haven't read the books in a long time, but I think I would still have the same feelings as I had in this video.
+Connor O'Brien Thanks, i started to read it and I like it a lot but it still isn't as good as the first one :P
I finished reading the giver.... Its so rude to end it that way---> but i mean, are Jonas or Gabe or maybe the giver on the other books, because I really wanna know what happened to them😫😫
Yes both Jonas and Gabe show up later on in the series. Not Gathering Blue, but they're in Messenger and Son.
The giver?
Connor O'Brien there is a glimpse of Jonas at the end of Gathering Blue but you have to look carefully.
huixin chiang
Dude The Giver dies. It's never mentioned but he's never referenced again plus he was super old so he's gone.
If you must know Jonas and Gabe’s fate is shown is the messager as they survive and Jonas becomes the leader of the village in the messager and appears in son and we learn about Gabe’s birth mother in it aswell
Side comment I have the same picture that he has behind him
I actually don’t know where I’ve put it since I filmed this 7-ish years ago. I should find it, and put it back up where I live currently. Mine has some water damage, but I got it from my grandfather.

Just finished Son, I don’t get all the complains and heat this quartet is getting I thought it was an awesome ending to a great series
Snowden???
I’ve only read the giver at first didn’t like the ending
That stinks! No book is for everyone!
