Thank you very much!
U should do a video on the beauty of Naked, a film by mike leigh. One of my favourites, the shots in it are really nice
Heat was his masterpiece.
This video was long, long, long overdue. One of the best directors of all time. Nobody captures loneliness better than Michael Mann.
❤
Wong Kar Wai does, but in a way dreamier and stylistic fashion.
Hey I do agree but what about Martin Scorsese and taxi driver ?? And maybe eyes wide shut and Stanley Kubrick ??
@@bastard9982 You're talking about whole movies in general, not particular shots. There's only one other director that comes close to capturing loneliness like Mann, that is Winding Refn.
Certainly Melville does
Most stylish director. 'God moving over the faces water' just made it 💙💙💙💙
moby and hans zimmer share the crown with music production for movies. this song from heat is one reason why
Saw the length of the clip and knew exactly what the music would be.
Mann’s breathtakingly stylistic neon cinematography and depiction of principled and stoic consummate professionals is something that will never be forgotten in Cinematic history. It’s been years I’ve been waiting for this video to drop.
No words. What principles?😅
@@James-ll3jb Obviously they are flawed anti-heroes many of things they do are morally reprehensible. I’m referring of adhering to codes and principles for the sake of being consummate professionals. E.G. Neil McCauley having the discipline to “not getting attached to anything you are not willing to walk out on in 30 seconds flat if you feel the heat around the corner.”
All of his characters observe their own form of what amounts to Bushido regardless of the consequences. Doing the thing most be done with total commitment or else it's not worth doing.
@@brookeduncan9699 "Bushido"???
Nobody shoots LA and captures urban isolation better Mann. Those blues are amazing.
This guy will be looked back upon as one of the Greatest Underrated Filmakers. His stuff is so deep, you only get it years later!! An absolute genius!!!
Manhunter is one of the most underrated movies of all time
Ridiculously good 80s film. Soundtracks amazing on their own
Absolutely. Same with Thief. I feel like most people think that the only movies this man made were Heat and Last Of The Mohicans
Michael mann night shots are simply great ❤
Easily one of my favorite filmmakers No one depicts cities at night like Michael Mann.
One my favourite filmmakers and my favourite film ever (heat).
Thank you for this treat
“Don't let yourself get attached to anything you are not willing to walk out on in 30 seconds flat if you feel the heat around the corner."
Magnificent choice for the final shot. Insider isn't the most obvious choice when a filmo has Heat, Mohicans and Manhunter but Insider is probably his most accomplished work.
The choice of scenes with the music... dude, you're just so talented. Always looking forward to see your vids. Sometimes, when I'm at my job and maybe I have some free hours, I like to go through your channel and see some vids, sometimes I even see the same vids over and over. This is how magic your videos are. Thank you so much for all your work!
Thanks a lot !!
The blue filter in Michael Mann's scenes signifies Loneliness.
Great compilation. He has such an amazing style.
"He loved the surface of the earth and the process of life"--an Orwell line that perfectly describes Mann (Kurosawa too).
No one can capture the weakness and strength of loneliness, both at the same time, like Mann does. He tells things with images words cant formulate.
I was needing this to be reminded of such greatness and depth
This is one of the best videos I’ve ever seen on UA-cam and the choice of music is just right. I’m not afraid to admit that I had tears in my eyes such is the beauty of the shots and the music.
Thanks a lot mate 🙏🏻
I love Michael Mann and his films. I'll never understand the hate for his Miami Vice film. I really love it a lot.
Because it's really a vibe and not Miami vice. They are working for another department in the movie and because of hurricane most of movie is shot in Caribbean. Just name it something else. And change Jaime and Colin and it's a great flick
@@brazen501 They should have just made them DEA agents or CIA even (like in Sicario) - the stuff they’re doing in that movie is way above the pay grade / skill level of even the most elite special units of Miami Dade cops
Miami Vice is an underrated Michael Mann movie
I LOVED Miami Vice
@@yakkattack Me too. The music in it is great too even of it wasn't Jan Hammer.
3:28 That powerboat scene and the run-up to it from Miami Vice is one of my favourite pieces of cinema ever. The romance of it and the action of it. I can even forgive him for using Moby as the music because it’s that good.
The moby/Patti Labelle accompaniment perfected that scene.
@@truslyd it did. Perfectly.
This is making my das so much better you can’t even imagine
Michael Mann mastered cinematography. His films are precise, beautiful and visually masterful. The actors and the settings are one and not separate. Ergo, poetry in motion. The most underrated director of our time.
Mann does know how to take an iconic shot. If you see his staging and shot selection.
Favorite Director. Incredible Storyteller. Fantastic Video.
You gotta do one for just the Miami vice tv show alone. There’s so many great shots and imagery in it
This brought a tear to my eye. Music is perfectly matched.
The most beautiful soundtracks n films!
🎉
Mann is a unique director. Loved the video, very imersive. ❤
What a great video! What a great director!
This video reminded me that I need to watch all of this directors filmography! My goodness! Such a great edit
He's amazing and has maybe one or two movies that aren't great, everything else is fantastic.
Mann is obviously a genius, but much respect has to go to the guy who made this. Beautiful, well done, sir 👏 ❤
The greatest director of all time, and it's not close.
Absolutely beautiful
My appreciation for Michael Mann started with Thief. He has influenced my sense of aesthetic all my life for which I am grateful.
This video just made my Sunday evening. Many thanks from Australia.
I love how Mann (and his DOP) can make the most mundane situation both familiar and visually interesting. I have been a big fan since Heat. The slightly over exposed shot driving through the tunnel always gives me goosebumps.
My fav director off all time.. Collateral was so influential on me growing up, not only it opened my eyes to what movies can be as in both visually and storytelling, but also it was the first time when i started to notice on filmmaking techniques more seriously.
5:54 I know it's a pretty known fact, but this shot is an hommage to the painting Pacific by Alex Colville
Michael Mann’s characters are in such beautiful settings, where they could be safe. But you feel some chaos and danger will come.
I dont know why, but the shot of the lens moving across Depp’s shoulders as hes “looking over his shoulders” is something that’s always stuck with me.
Great work, much appreciated!!
Love this channel. Thank you.
Perfect music choice btw.
Kudos to Dante Spinotti, the legendary cinematographer behind many of his films
Edit : I noticed you put their names in the description, great way to honor a less - appreciated job that’s a huge part of a directors vision.
He's an exceptionally storyteller. His films are just beautiful to watch an audio-visual feast . He knows his craft iconic director.
These scenes all gave me a feeling of loneliness and beeing lost in the world. But it's not a cold or clinical feeling like i get from the work of Nicolas Winding Refn. These scenes from Michael Mann feel very human, very warm and loving. Like a person with a lot of pain is watching those people in the movie from a far or an angel who is watching the life of the humans and who feels sad for them because he cannot do anything for them. He can just watch their struggle of being a human being. That is what i felt watching this video.
YES! BEEN WAITING FOR THIS SINCE FOREVER! THANK YOU!
Wow. Superb job putting this together!
Wow, what a video, what a director!!
Fantastic content.
Was watching your videos on Collateral and Heat on repeat lately because they condense their moods perfectly and now this 👌🏼
I always wait for videos u are the best ❤
One of the best and in my top 5 directors of all time he films night time shots like no other director and the atmospheric sound is mind blowing
One of the all-time great filmmakers. Classics 'Manhunter' and 'The Last of the Mohicans' are must-watch movies :-)
One of my favorites of all time. Thank you
Great director! One of my favorites. Nice edit as always :)
Oh man, the ultimate.
I've been subconsciously looking/waiting for this. Excellent job. I'll loop this to the Manhunter and Insider themes. Many thanks
Great video. The only thing missing is the slow motion shot of Petersen with the seagulls in Manhunter....Love that shot!!!
Sublimely transcendent! 😍
That was wonderful, I almost cry, stunning cinematography and that music, perfect!
😳👌
Wow man, what a nice tribute this is. Captivating! Michael Mann's night scenes are always a piece of art.
Such beautiful imagery. Mann just great director with style.
no one can capture the ocean as beautiful as Michael Mann. I mean, no one.
Thank you for making this. You truly are a Fan of Mann.
What a beautiful video, man. Thank you so much. I don't know why but everytime i hear this Moby tune i immediately remember 'Heat' final scene and goosebumps start running all over my body
The shots at 4:35, 5:50 & 5:56 are incredible!
i call these moments... michael mann moments...
my favourite director... of all time.
thank you sir
Moby, the OG icon for all us old school ravers, went above and beyond when he created this musical masterpiece, the perfect accompaniment for this fantastic montage of some of the most memorable and visually stunning cinematography committed to film. There is something truly unique in the way Mann sees the world and then shows us what he sees. This was a great video, really ❤
My all time favourite director. Stunning edit, great job💯 would love to see edit of Mann’s Public Enemies, it has some beautiful shots as well.
I literally finished watching Heat not two minutes ago, after watching Thief for a class. What are the odds?!
Nice choice of scenes...Love it!
manhunter 1 of my favorite films, the lighting is amazing, as are all of his films,
I wish you use Reprise version of this music since it's my favorite than original but other than that glad you made Michael Mann tribute video! ;)
Espetacular, ótima trilha e uma bela fotografia do diretor michael mann 😯
Exceptional edit
This guy used to be a taxi cab driver in Chicago... never give up on your dreams! 💪💪
I love Micheal Manns use of digital. using the form to create cinematic language. magic.
Stunning edit
Thank you!
The fact that there's no cinematography reel of Lucasz Zal's work on UA-cam is astonishing.
It would be nice to do The Beauty Of with a cinematographer, like Greig Fraser, or even a production studio, such as Pixar or Cartoon Saloon
5:50 “it’s just you and me sport. I’m gonna find you goddamit”
Did we see the scene of Neal driving through the tunnel to freedom before he decides to get Waingro? Love that one!
Michael Mann's films are crafted for the rebellious, unconventional man who possesses a keen sense of style and aesthetics.
The choice of music is apt
One of the all time great directors. Criminally overlooked by the academy, Mann directed not one but three movies in the 90s that could all be considered a masterpiece.
yup and he's also direted multiple masterpiece worthy films both before and after that.
Really love this
Would appreciate if you could list down movie titles that was used for the video
Michael Mann is a terrific director and again thank you for compiling this
YES! YES! AWESOME!
Goosebumps!
I'm not necessarily a big fan of this director but I can't help to watch the ending chase scene of the Last of the Mohicans when I stumble upon it, it's one of my favorite cinema moment ever, truly haunting.
You should have included the first episode of Tokyo Vice season 1, Mann's directing was incredible there!
amazing work as always! could you do a video on pierpaolo pasolini?
Perfect
what a filmmaker!
Genio!!!!
Great video! Will you make a video about the beauty of 500 days of summer?
Best video to date
To me Micheal Mann and Ridley Scott are the two greatest visualist directors alive today.
Magnificent video with the film director, Rhapsody in blue: Very few directors have portrayed the nocturnal atmosphere of modern cities like Mann, which means that many of his most iconic images tend to have bluish tones and a certain metallic texture that, of course, rhymes with the psychological processes of his characters.
Moby's music, thanks to the movie Heat I started following him.
