- Dewy pines (Drosophyllum lusitanicum) are beautiful, Mediterranean carnivorous plants that have a reputation for being difficult to grow. They are short lived perennials that take some nuance when watering but are so rewarding to grow! Damon will share all his best tips and tricks with you on how to grow these plants in this video.
If you’d like to skip ahead to any specific section of care, here are the time stamps:

So cool seeing Daniela’s reflection in Damon’s sunglasses as she shoots the video😍😍
I learned the hard way that I’d be in that reflection and make sure I’m presentable now 😂🤦♀️
@@California_Carnivores Hahahahaha!
I love your longer, detailed videos. Such great content, you guys! Thanks!!!
This video was really great. Can’t wait to receive mine. Thanks for posting
Thank you!
Nice, thorough treatise on this misunderstood plant. Great job as always! Thank you, Damon!
Thank you!
LOL! Damen, when you called it a slobbering pine, I decided I needed to get one...
"That's why it's good to have a bunch of them, always have too many plants!" Great advice! XD
Thanks for another detailed video, I love all the information! I've been wanting to get one since reading they're from the Mediterranean and I'm in California but was discouraged when someone called them an annual, glad to hear that's not the case. I will definitely be eyeing one of these for my next acquisition!
We consider them short lived perennials and so many areas of California, you’ll be able to grow them!
Great video! Just ordered one! Can't wait to add it to the collection!
Edit: I'm also going to attempt growing it under an LED, wish me luck!! 🤞
Thank you! And keep us posted on how it does under lights!
Thank you so much for all this information on the Dewy Pine! Love your videos!
Just ordered mine, along with a Hamata. Going to try growing it southburbs of chicago.
I got my first dewey pine seeds sprouting 😮❤
I tend to cut back on water once the plant reaches 3-4" tall (the same time I plant them in the large clay pot.) No risk of the plant rotting if you do it that early.
Good to know! They’re so rewarding; I hope more people start growing them!
@@California_Carnivores Yeah I know I'd like to, but it's been extremely difficult for me to keep them alive through winter. It's just too wet and cold, and even when protecting them from the elements the constant high humidity almost always results in the plant rotting.
Im in coastal Lithuania, with -4°F winters, serious flooding every spring and fall, and unbelievably humid summers, this place is a Dewey pine's worst nightmare LOL
Nice video though, they're beautiful plants but I don't think I can provide em with the care they need so, ill just admire them from photos and such online 😅
I got mine to sprout 💎🖤💖
Could the leaf change also be like byblis where they're using it to photosynthesize so they have everything on the bottom?
It may be a dual purpose; both photosynthesis and keeping the bugs from getting washed off
Sounds like sowing morning glory seeds. Almost same care even. Too cool.
So when I order a Dewey pine from you guys do I need to soak it in water or have you already done that because I am planning to buy one as soon as they’re available I’m probably gonna get about three of them just like you have in your pot that’s what I was thinking
When they are small, before they flower, they can be sitting in water but in winter and after they flower they should not be sitting in water
I just got one. Very nervous to transplant it. But, I can't find info if the soil must be dry or wet in the pot before to put the plant, or, if I have to water it after potting it.
Use moistened soil before transplant and try not to disturb or touch the roots, they have a long tap root that hates being disturbed so moving a big ball of soil around the root is preferable to bare rooting it. And then water it in after you pot it up too!
Atter sowing, is it necessary to cover the pot with a translucent dome to provide high humidity? i did that last time but all dewy pine seeds are killed by fungus. Can i just let the pot in open air and even get some sunlinght?
We do it both ways with success. So, if you want them to germinate quickly, you’ll want to cover them but check them every day. It’s a delicate balance of keeping the dome on juts long enough…
You can also sow seeds and just be patient. They can take up to a year to germinate but will and do
@@California_Carnivores thank you 🥰
@@California_Carnivores Thank you so much for your help,my dewy pine has germinated for about 10 days. There is another issue again😭, i want keep them outside for more sunlight, but im in the rainy season😵. So could these dewy babys surrive from some light rain ?or
i should keep them in my greenhouse?
@@gz2665 how big are the seedlings right now?
@@California_Carnivores They are just about to stretch their second pair of real leaf. About 2-3cm i think.
My grandson 5 years old really wanted a plant that we got from Home Depot. I thought it would die. But it’s been close to a year now. I have long grass like stem growing. They’re really long so I cut them shorter. Do I need to get rid of them?
It could be a flower stalk trying to grow or maybe a weed?
Can they survive northeast winter?
They can’t take serious cold unfortunately
After ordering a plant from you guys how long do I have to wait to repot I'm looking to buy some sundews and nepenthes
You should be able to wait a few years! Some Nepenthes grow super fast so if the pitchers are toppling the pot over, you’ll need to repot a little sooner
Do they eat fungus gnats/gnat flies? Can I grow them in a terranium?
These would be a bad choice for a terrarium but Cape Sundews or Drosera adelae would be great and they do eat fungus gnats
It Damon and his paper run
So in winter, do not put them in water gotcha I’ll try to order mine sometime when it’s warmer and summer
