Allahumma barik brothers. I have thought for so long, because of muslim and non-muslim public figures, that criticizing muslim ruler in public is permissible. Unconsciously I accepted this viewpoint because of how much non-Muslims criticizing there leaders, Specifically in America. But if one was to lokk closer one would realize that mistrusting your leaders/rulers will bring no good. Excuse my writing, english is not my first language.
I most admit that I have at som point nearly blindly trusted som public figures witout accounting for where they have learned there knowledge or whether or not what they are doing is in actuality benefiting the ummah. I thank allah azzawajal for the guidance
    Jazāk Allāhu Khayran

      Allah said:
O you who believe, obey Allah and obey the Messenger and those in authority among you.
      Surat al-Nisa 4:59
Ibn Umar reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said:
      السَّمْعُ وَالطَّاعَةُ عَلَى الْمَرْءِ الْمُسْلِمِ فِيمَا أَحَبَّ وَكَرِهَ مَا لَمْ يُؤْمَرْ بِمَعْصِيَةٍ فَإِذَا أُمِرَ بِمَعْصِيَةٍ فَلَا سَمْعَ وَلَا طَاعَةَ
Listening to and obeying the leader is an obligation upon a Muslim, whether he likes it or dislikes it, as long as he is not commanded to disobey Allah. If he is commanded to disobey, then there is no listening or obedience.

Hudhayfa ibn al-Yaman reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:
      يَكُونُ بَعْدِي أَئِمَّةٌ لَا يَهْتَدُونَ بِهُدَايَ وَلَا يَسْتَنُّونَ بِسُنَّتِي وَسَيَقُومُ فِيهِمْ رِجَالٌ قُلُوبُهُمْ قُلُوبُ الشَّيَاطِينِ فِي جُثْمَانِ إِنْسٍ
Rulers after me will come who do not follow my guidance and my tradition (sunnah). Some of their men will have the hearts of devils in a human body.
I said, “O Messenger of Allah, what should I do if I live to see that time?” The Prophet said:
You should listen and obey them even if the ruler strikes your back and takes your wealth, even still listen and obey.

It was said, “Shall we confront them with swords?” The Prophet said:

There will be rulers from whom you will see both goodness and corruption. One who recognizes their evil and hates it will maintain his innocence, but one who is pleased with it and follows them will be sinful.

Whoever rejects obedience to the ruler and divides the community and dies will have died upon ignorance. Whoever fights under the banner of one who is blind, raging for the sake of tribalism, or calling to tribalism, or supporting tribalism, and is killed will have died upon ignorance. Hasan al-Basri, may Allah have mercy on him, said:
If the people had patience when they are being tested by their unjust ruler, it will not be long before Allah will give them a way out. However, they always rush to their swords, so they are left with their swords. By Allah, not even for a single day did they bring about any good.
      Source: al-Ṭabaqāt al-Kubrá 8789
And Fudayl ibn ‘Iyad, may Allah have mercy on him, said:
      لَوْ أَنَّ لِي دَعْوَةً مُسْتَجَابَةً مَا جَعَلْتُهَا إِلَّا فِي إِمَامٍ فَصَلَاحُ الْإِمَامِ صَلَاحُ الْبِلَادِ وَالْعِبَادِ

      Source: Siyar A’lām al-Nubalā’ 8/434
And Imam al-Tahawi stated in his famous creed:
We do not recognize the rebellion against our leader or those in charge of our affairs even if they are unjust, nor do we wish evil for them, nor do we refuse to follow them. We hold that obedience to them is part of obedience to Allah the Exalted and therefore obligatory as long as they do not command us to commit sins. We pray for their right guidance and pardon.

As for rebelling against the ruler and fighting him, it is forbidden by consensus of the Muslims even if he is sinful and oppressive. I have mentioned many narrations with this meaning. The people of the Sunnah have agreed that the ruler should not be removed due to his sinfulness. As for the view mentioned in the books of jurisprudence from some of our companions that he should be removed, which is also the opinion of the Mu’tazilites, then it is a serious mistake from them and is in opposition to the consensus. The scholars have said the reason his removal and rebellion against him is forbidden is because of what that entails of tribulations, bloodshed, and corruption, for the harm in removing the ruler is greater than letting him remain.
      Source: Sharḥ Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 1840
Iyad ibn Ghanam reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:
      مَنْ أَرَادَ أَنْ يَنْصَحَ لِسُلْطَانٍ بِأَمْرٍ فَلَا يُبْدِ لَهُ عَلَانِيَةً وَلَكِنْ لِيَأْخُذْ بِيَدِهِ فَيَخْلُوَ بِهِ فَإِنْ قَبِلَ مِنْهُ فَذَاكَ وَإِلَّا كَانَ قَدْ أَدَّى الَّذِي عَلَيْهِ لَهُ
Whoever intends to advise one with authority, then he should not do so publicly. Rather, he should take him by the hand and advise him in seclusion. If he accepts the advice, then all is well. If he does not accept it, then he has fulfilled his duty.

    Asalamu alaikum warahmatullah wabarakatu,
I have to say the part that resonated with me and I’ve been thinking about for a couple of days now is the podcast you guys discusssed on tawheed and you briefly broke down what it meant. I usually here a lot of salafi’s frustrated at the fact that most of us laymen don’t even understand the meaning of the shahada and how we should all stop everything and go seek knowledge but you both took the time to actually explain it in a way I’ve never heard it before and I appreciate that. I told my mother and my sister and will continue to try and pass the message on to those closest to me. You both are right, everything in the religion becomes so simplified when you refer back to tawheed. “To single out Allah” and to negate all else is what I learnt from that podcast and to follow the prophets saw way. It really changed my perspective and I appreciate you all for sharing these gems with the rest of us. It’s not just listening to you cover hot topics as I’m pretty sure a lot of us are really learning so I sincerely ask Allah to reward you both abundantly and make this heavy on your scale of good deeds, ameen.

The anology of comparing the Wali Al Amr (Muslim ruler) to the father as head of the household really hit home. The brothers mentioned two things in this regard:
    1. Some salafs would want their dua for rectification of Muslim ruler to be answered more than any other dua because if the ruler is rectified the whole nation is likely to be rectified - just like if the head of the household, the father, is upon good, the rest of his household likely to be upon righteousness.
    2. You wouldn't like your children or family members exposing your sins/mistakes to the neighbourhood, rather you'd want the matter to be highlighted in goodwill in secret- then what about the ruler who is in charge of the whole country. Indeed this deen is (in essence) sincerity (including sincere advice towards each other and the ruler). @35.30

It was a very interesting point that you brothers mentioned about not rebelling against the ruler even if he commands you to commit evil, and rather to disobey him in the command itself.
It made me think of the scholars of the 4 madhabs like Imam Maalik, Imam as-Shafi', and Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal (rahimahullah) who did not obey the rulers when they asked them to change the religion, or to issue fatwas in their favor.
Rather they disobeyed them and obeyed Allah SWT, but at the same time, did not remove their allegiance from the ruler or rebel against them.
Subhan Allah, when reflecting on the podcast, I realized that we see this example even from the scholars of the past.

You asked a question and got answered and showed you understood but at the same time you came back and acted like this same question was not answered !!
I think it’s good to go and sturdy deeply about this topic/matter before you spread something that will cause more and more fitnah and confusion coz clearly many Muslims do not understand this aspect rather we pic 1/2Hadith (without even going deep down into it) and we even ignore other ahaadeeth that talk about the same topic, many of us do not even know how to reconcile/understand between 2ahadeeth that may seem to us as contradicting, May Allah guide us.
But my advise to you akhi is you might think you understood something Yet you could be wrong and Allah will hold us accountable about that which we speak without knowledge or out of ignorance and those who misguide us will on the day of judgment forsake you and say to you, “we let you astray because we too were misguided”
It’s better to be silent about that which is not clear to you and let those who are learnt speak.
Allah knows best but let’s learn our positions as muslims (let’s not be influenced by common men whose speech seams to be convincing)
      And Allah knows best.

As usual, the breakdowns of masaail are on point. The massallah regarding Halloween was aptly dealt with, also last week, going through the shubha in the comment section about obeying the muslim ruler was clear and concise. Very important for the shabaab to be exposed to this type of content in these times of fitn.
The issue of Haqiqatue is a problem. I benefitted from his breakdowns and articles on philosophical liberalism, feminism and modernity while studying for my MA dissertation, those issues related to secular academic critique were useful, but always saw that anything to do with manhaj and aqueedah was a mushkillah and should definitely be avoided. The Anwar Awlaki scenario you gave was poignant and scary. shows just how real the problem can, and where one can end up when taking from the wrong people.

In this podcast, you brothers mentioned how one should obey the Muslim ruler, with the obvious exception of the muslim ruler ordering his citizens to do haram. I feel that some may question that, especially when it comes to Muslims in some European countries struggling with their governments ordering against hijab and other fundamental actions Muslims are obligated to follow. There are also Muslims in China and other countries who are killed for following the pillars of Islam like fasting and praying. Could you guys use this opportunity to discuss the importance of hijrah and how one should even start contemplating hijrah.
Also wanted to comment that I love the At-Tibayn podcasts and what you brothers are doing with it. May Allah make it easy for you to continue with khayr.

Great point about how the rulers have authority over the Muslims. So if my husband is hosting Halloween parties, or selling alcohol, or allowing our son to cross dress in public, or building synagogue, should I still be an obedient wife and stay with him? Mustaheel.

KNOWLEDGE WOULD BE TAKEN AWAY, AND IGNORANCE WOULD PREVAIL UPON PEOPLE AND THE TURMOIL AT THE END OF THE WORLD
'Abdullah b. 'Amr b. al-'As reported Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying:
Verily, Allah does not take away knowledge by snatching it from the people but He takes away knowledge by taking away the scholars, so that He leaves no learned person, people turn to ignorant as their, leaders; then they are asked to deliver religious verdicts and they deliver them without knowledge, they go astray, and lead others astray.
Many of us Muslims do not even know the conditions of Salah, wudhu, Zakat etc and we are soo busy with criticism and claiming “we are enjoining good and forbidding evil”
Yes, no doubt it is a good thing but how sure are you that this which you are speaking about you have got clear in-depth knowledge about it if you don’t even know the conditions of the Kalimah nor it’s nullifiers??
The very first thing Allah will question us about is SALAH
The very first question in your grave will be MAN RABBUKA??
Yet you don’t even understand HIS ATTRIBUTES and we are busy with “boycot a Muslim scholars and leader/country for mistakes done by minority ignorant Muslims, making takfiri over them? YET YOU LIVE IN A LAND WHERE THE LEADER(non Muslim) IMPOSES RIBAH (major sin)ON YOU, forces teachings of KUFUR onto your children left right and center EVERYDAY but you do not Criticize them as loud as you criticize a Muslim.
    Subhana’Allah
It may well be that some of us are performing good deeds for others and these will be handed over to them.
    Allahu musta’an

Asalaamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullah, I would like to ask the brothers about how we can understand the ahadith that were presented in the podcast (following the Muslim ruler even if he is oppressive, advising the Muslim ruler privately, etc.) in light of the hadith about the best of jihad is speaking out against a tyrannical ruler? Is this difference here between Muslim vs. non-Muslim? Meaning there is a different ruling when dealing with oppressive Muslim rulers vs. Non-Muslim rulers? Or is the ruling the same and "speaking out" here is referring to advising the ruler rather than making his oppression known?
I am asking out of a desire for knowledge and in shaa Allah the brothers can answer, if possible. Jazak Allahu khayran.

Haayakum Allāh Akhi and I appreciate your question.
Combining between these two hadeeth is simple Inshaa Allāh.
The first is clearly stating that we do not speak out against the Muslim rulers even if they oppress us. We advise them privately and make duah for their rectification.
The second Hadeeth, is referring to commanding the good and forbidding the evil; regarding that particular subject matter at hand.
For example, during the time of Imam Ahmad there was the misguided saying going around regarding khalaq al Quran (i.e. saying the Quran is created). This statement was even being spread by the ruler at the time. So, in this situation: "The best most virtuous types of Jihad is speaking a just/fair word whilst under an oppressive ruler”(1). Though Imam Ahmad was punished by that ruler, he kept speaking the truth by stating that the Quran is not created, but rather it is the speech of Allāh. Hence, he didn’t start speaking about the ruler directly.
So we see here that even though the situation may come with some severe harms, we should always speak a word of truth and prohibit the evil.
(1)Btw, this is a better way to translate the Hadeeth:
      أفضلُ الجهادِ كلمةُ عدلٍ عند سُلطانٍ جائرٍ - أو أميرٍ جائرٍ -
الراوي : أبو سعيد الخدري | المحدث : الألباني | المصدر : صحيح أبي داود

However, the sudden shift in Saudi Arabia is promoted on a governmental level. We know this. And criticizing a ruler could be necessary and it’s an act the companions did. This is different from Khurooj or calling to Khurooj.
The way they were celebrating Halloween in Riyadh was cringe. Costumes of this quality is hard to get in the west. The whole event just looks like staged.
